Karen, I don't know if you're familiar with the Harper's Ferry Area, but there is a point at which you can stand, and stretch out your hands and be in three states at once (MD,VA, WVA). As I remember it was on or near a bridge. They also say that on a good day, you can see five states from the same point.(Include PA and Ohio in the above list). Of course, there was no WVA in 1858, but what a romantic idea of joining in marriage at the union of two states. Harpers Ferry, even then, was also a popular resort. People went to see Jefferson's rock that overlooks the Potomac river. He had evidently travelled there in his early days and wrote a glowing discription of the scenery. It is beautiful!
