    1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] new Hampshire County book announcement
    2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. For those of you who have an interest in Hampshire County (originally a part of Old Frederick County until 1754), a book is being published to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the County. It will be ready for delivery in March. The title is "Hampshire County, West Virginia, 1754-2004." Unlike most books in this class, it has a complete name index and a general index. The publication may be described as "friendly to genealogists," although it is not a genealogical work per se. It will be bound in hardcover, 8 1/2" x 11". There are 94 chapters (2-4 pages each) plus numerous pages of "box topics," photographs and maps. Approximately 75 "authors" or writers participated in the project, many of whom are well-known for their areas of expertise. The editors were Roberta Munske and Wilmer L. Kerns. The book presents a cross-section of people and events over a 250-year period. New information and insights are presented rather than reiterating what others have said in publications of the past. The book contains excellent insight and discussions of Colonial history, which has been neglected in Hampshire County. Among other topics, here is a brief list of subjects: early settlement, Native Americans, a writeup on each of the counties that were formed from Hampshire; early settlement, history of transportation (roads, railroads, etc.), agriculture and industry, medicine and doctors, school history, profiles of elected officials, the court system and jail, and physical science (geology, ecology, plants and animals, etc.) a brief description or history of the major communities, African American history, the fine arts and artisions, and much more. Also there are chapter or "box" biographies of selected residents of the past (e. g., Col Elias Poston--genealogy chapter), Capt. William Foreman, Richard Williams, Jack Schaffenaker, Maud Pugh, Grace Kelso Garner, Warren E. Duliere, Joseph Edwards, James Caudy, Job Pearsall, Isaac Millar, Lt. John Blue, John William Wolford, John Jeremiah Jacob, John Jacob Cornwall, Herman Guy Kump, William Ansel Jr., as well as George Washington. Special attention was given to the various wars and their impact upon Hampshire County residents. The landscape of genealogy is undergoing some major changes. During decades of the past, genealogical research was little more than a collection of names and dates and relationships. Today, there is an emphasis on understanding the historical context. We believe that anyone with family roots in Hampshire County will find this to be a helpful companion. This book could easily retail for $45.00. A special pre-publication price was considered, but a decision was made to set a reduced price for everyone at $29.95 + $4.00 shipping. West Virginia residents should add 6% sales tax. You may order now; make check payable to HCCVB and mail to: Roberta Munske/Hampshire 250 Book HC 64, Box 39 Yellow Spring, WV 26865 Disclosure: the book is published under the auspices of the Hampshire County 250th Anniversary Committee. I will receive no financial gain from any aspect of my participation in this project. Wilmer L. Kerns

    2. Denis, Just below are the headings for each column reading right to left; but the entries themselves are each on their own line. This is from the the 'GENERAL INDEX TO DEEDS, ETC.-Frederick County, Virginia" Mircrofilm Reel #48 from the Library of Virginia. This tells you that their is a record of that transaction and tells you in which Deed Book----Volume and Page to find the whole document. So now you know there are documents with the following GLOVERS in Frederick County, VA. I included the entry for the switch of part of Frederick County going to Shenandoah County. So before that date you are going to find the documents in Frederick County. I just got the film in today and while it is packed full of information; I was unable to go over it very throughly and it will take me some time as we only have one reader at our library and there will be a number of days it is closed and/or have shortened hours. If I see anymore GLOVERS, I will let you know----------but, I think your friend was right there are GLOVERS in them there hills! YEAR OF INST. 1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Snodgrass family in Frederick Co., VA in 1770

    3. Charles Snodgrass is mentioned in the 1770 Frederick County Deed Book (vol. 14, p. 36) - other persons listed were Archibald Gray, John McCown, and Nicholas Purtle. In 1770 Charles Snodgrass is on the membership list of Tuscarora, Falling Waters, and Back Creek Churches (now Berkeley Co., WV). Also listed is John Snodgrass, John Snodgrass, Jr., Joseph Snodgrass, and David Snodgrass. Is anyone researching any of these Snodgrass men? How is Charles Snodgrass related to the other men? Charles Snodgrass is found in the following areas between 1770 and 1808: Frederick Co., VA, Berkeley Co., WV, Fayette Co., PA, and Monongalia Co., WV (where he died in 1808). Millie

    3. Was Charles Snodgrass married in Frederick Co., VA? If so, to whom? I believe he married sometime between 1758 and 1772. Charles is first mentioned in the 1770 Frederick County Deed Book (vol. 14, p. 36) - other persons listed were Archibald Gray, John McCown, and Nicholas Purtle. 3. Thanks to the work of a local researcher, I've already found a ton of info......Dr. Kerns has written a couple books that contain a lot of data on all these folks...and, yes, you're right.....they are all Quakers, one of whom was a 'charter member' of the Hopewell MM....a James Wright, if memory serves. (these are all new folks to me, so I don't have the info committed to memory yet!! (but, give me time!!). I am well acquainted with Hinshaw, and have it on a CD......many of my folks are included in the records, showing the trek from ChesterCo, Pa, to Va and on to Ohio (thank goodness for Quakers; they were fabulous record keepers and make our research so much easier). If I can look anyone up in Hinshaw for you, please ask. 3. I'm new to the list and new to researh in this 'part of the world'. I've just discovered that my Ohio Jenkins came from Va, and am interested in finding more about them, and where they lived. Michael and wife Rachel Pugh JENKINS emigrated to the Concord Meeting in Colerain, Belmont Co, Ohio in around 1802, along with their chilren Ann, Jacob, Lydia, Betty, Jane, Caty (my ancestor), Pugh and John. Michael had married Rachel1787, 4, 11 . at Back Creek - she was the dt of Thomas and Ann, Frederick Co, Va and born in. 16-2-1770. This information was found in the Hopewell MM records. Michael was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Rogers Jenkins, who lived in the Back Creek area....Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Ellen Pugh Rogers. Apparently many were members of the Hopewell Meeting, and I'm curious about the meeting house, near Winchester. I know the meeting is still in existence, but wonder about the building, and if it is original to the 1700s (although I imagine those members who lived far away, in what is now Hampshire Co, WV, surely didn't attend meeting there, but in some home in the immediate area. I'm looking forward to hearing lots about the families, and the area.... Sandra

    1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Bohrer family - deeds, land records, wills and probate records
    2. djaquiss
    3. I am interested in and researching the Bohrer family who were in old Frederick Counties VA & MD from the 1720s - to the present. Of course many of the descendants have scattered to many places around the planet. It is our understanding that Abraham and his son, John Adam Bohrer, with wife, Lucinda J. unknown and family were in and owned property in what is now Virginia and West Virginia in the 1700s and that many of their descendents are still there at the present time. We have found many of them but we are still looking. Abraham had two other sons, John Peter and John George and a daughter, Anna Maria that we are also researching. We have considerable information on many of John Peter's descendants but would appreciate any and all information on any and all Bohrer's. Does some kind soul (SKS) know anything about this family? Please send me any Bohrer or descendant information on or off list. If not, could SKS please tell me if there is anyone that is willing to go to the courthouse and/or elsewhere to look for deeds, land records, old news articles, wills and probate records, etc.? I should be happy to pay copying costs and postage for hard copies. If SKS has any information or is interested in finding land records and/or probate records please contact me. Does SKS know if there is anyone doing Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK http://www.raogk.org/) in or near Washington County, MD? Thanks in advance (TIA) D. JAQUISS
