Was Berkeley Co. VA at one time a part of Old Frederick Co.VA? My ancestor was John Jasper who witnessed the will of John Covenhoven in 1778. He is said to have lived at one time in Frederick Co. VA, but he died in Union Co. SC in 1799. I am still looking for the ancestry of John Jasper and would be interested in information on any Jaspers who lived in Frederick Co. VA in the 1700s. Is anyone researching Thomas Cassady and Barbara Fulk who married on November 15, 1787 in Frederick Co., VA? I am trying to determine if Thomas Cassady died by 1796. If so, where is he buried. Who were the parents of Barbara Fulk/Foulk? Many thanks. Millie
Hampshire and Frederick County Friends, I am looking to correspond and obtain additional information on the SHANHOLTZER and SNYDER (German) lines of my Mother-in-Law, Mary Ellen Snyder-Long (Born 1941) of Fort Ashby, WV (Mineral County). Many of them are buried in Levels Cemetery, Levels, WV. Specifically, I would like to know who her 2nd GGM, Elizabeth Shanholtzer's (1832-1913) (m. John R. Durst) parents, grandparents etc. are. Also, who her 2GGF, Frederick Snyder's (1828-1908) parents, grandparents are....see below. Thank you in advance for any assistance provided As a side note, my father, William H. Park, has purchased Dr. Wilmer Kerns' book, "Shanholtzer History and Allied Families Roots in Hampshire County, W.VA and Frederick County, VA", which includes eleven generations of desc. of Johannes Schoenholtzer, the German immigrant who settled in Chester Co., Pa, in 1727 and 223 pictures, most of which represent the earlier generations of people born 1792-1900. I have not received it yet in the mail, but hoping that some of those ancestors below are included in the book. I am hoping that some lister might recognize these two names - Matthias Nelson & his wife, Catherine Renner. I have, for some time, tried to learn the names of Matthias' parents but with no luck. He was b. abt. 1770 in the Frederick Ct., VA area. I believe he married Catherine Renner in VA as their first born son, Isaac, from whom I descend, is born there. They later move to Greene Ct., PA and Matthias dies there 18 Aug. 1829. Their son, Isaac, moves on from PA to OH but their other son, Samuel Nelson stays in PA. Any clues as to the identity of Matthias Nelson's parents is greatly appreciated. Thanks Gnanse Nelson
My ancestor, Nicholas Parchman, was in Col Washington's militia around Winchester in 1758. I have no other records for him before 1773 in PA. Family tradition says he was German, but some legends say Scots-Irish. I have been looking for his origins for 28 years. I am looking for any records for him in the Shenandoah Valley. Any suggestions.

Don't know if this will narrow it down much, but-- I am in the process of (very slowly) transcribing/abstracting the Hampshire Co. court minutes 1847-1850 (probably will finish in about 20 years! I'll keep you all posted), and found a few references to a road planned in that area, notably: >On the motion of Philip Swisher through whose land the road prayed for >from the grassy lick road upon the land of Joseph Hoffman to Horns saw >mill road on the land of Enoch Park will pass a writ in the motion of ad >quod damnum is awarded him to ascertain what damage he will >sustain....(This was dated Dec. 27, 1847). Now if you can just figure out where Horn's Saw Mill Road is/was, you'll know you're in the general region....:) Martha Grenzeback graymatters@alltel.net > At 12:07 PM 21-02-2004 -0500, Wilmer L. Go west on U.S. Route 50 (Winchester to Romney). After crossing Back Creek, turn right on the next dirt road. Follow that road across a railroad track and go several hundred feet (or yards) more until the road turns left. The Jeremiah Smith cemetery is on a bank to the left, just at the point where the road turns to the left and starts an uphill climb. This should get you there. If I had a road map at my fingertips, I would identify the (dirt) road #, and if I was there in my car, I could give you the exact distances. Without those two aids, I have given ballpark directions. My impression is that Enoch Park lived along Grassy Lick Road, between Romney and Kirby. I have not done on-site research on this for more than a decade, so I will not attempt provide more detail. Helen, Noticed your posting for KY Robinsons. Was this a look up or are you working on your line in KY? My direct line came to Louisville in the late 1870s/early 1880s and appear to have remained in the Louisville area, my, g-father, John Dilley Robinson, being the only one of his siblings to have children. I know that "Farmer" has traced some Robinsons in his line, (Benjamin and descendants, I believe) locating to KY from Harrison Co., VA. Do you have Robinsons entering KY (or TN or NC) in the early 1800s or prior? I am still searching for the elusive brothers (sons of John Robinson, b. 1738) to my gggg-father, John T. Robinson. They are unnamed in the two history books I have, and only mentioned as moving to Tennessee circa 1800. I believe these brothers could connect many of the postings I have seen for Robinsons in TN, KY,and NC to the line of Christopher, but so far have been unsuccessful with this endeavor. Another lister just sent me the following as a possible brother to my John T. Robinson: Joseph Robinson. B. 07-Jun-1786, Amherst Co., VA, d. Bef 1848 in Green Co., KY I have not had a chance to look into this yet. Do you have any info on this Joseph or other brothers to John T. Robinson, b. abt 1780, s/o John Robinson, b. 1738. I also received the following on John Robinson, b. 1738, but am concerned about the accuracy of this info, as there is no source and some the children listed are identical to the names I have for my John T. Robinson, b. 1780. (Again, the two histories (likely one cited the other) I have for children of John Robinson and Lucy Smith only lists John T. and two brothers.) Maj. John Robinson, b. ca 1738, St. George, Spotsylvania Co., VA, d. 17-Sep-1798 in Amherst Co., VA. 1st wife Catherine Page, no children shown. 2nd wife Lucy Smith and I show 15 children. The boys are: William, Stephen, Henry, John, Robert, Beverly, Lewis, Thomas, Hiram, Simeon, Arthur and Joseph. First two born in Amherst Co., VA. then Henry born in Frederick Co., VA, then John you know about. I show Robert just born in Virginia, and no place of birth shown for Beverly or Lewis, then back to Amherst Co., for Thomas, Hiram, Simeon, Arthur and Joseph. I don't show any references to Tennessee for any of them, but some died in Green Co., KY. I would appreciate any info you have on these individuals, and any history you might have with your line that would help. Hello My reading of the entry is thus: Elizabeth Gummerson died with out a will (i. e. died intestate) thus "Administrator". If Ms. Gummerson had died with a will her estate would have been "testate" (i. e. "with testimony" meaning written instructions) with an Executor, who would execute her instructions. EDMUND BUTLER is being appointed administrator of Ms. Gummerson's estate. The wording makes it clear that Mary Davis is Ms. Gummerson's daughter, but does not make any effort to state married versus maiden names. As to the relationship between Mr. Butler and Mary Davis we have no way of knowing if there is one unless the court goes out of its way to state the relationship which was not necessary for appointment as administrator. The word "descendant" referred to the deceased Elizabeth Guttersnipe. The phase "in right of MARY DAVIS" referred to the fact that Mary Davis is the rightful heir of Ms. Guttersnipe by being her daughter by blood, thus the wording "in right of". I hope all of this helps you. I used to read these kind of documents all the time when I was a title abstractor in Charlottesville Va. I discovered very early on that lawyers don't use english, they have their own lingo, which can be a bit confusing at first, but with a little practice and thought you can get the hand of it. Good Luck John >My Questions: > >In your opinion, would Edmund Butler as listed below in the court record, be >a previous husband of Elizabeth Gummerson or a court-appointed >representative (does word descendant refer to Elizabeth or Edmund)? > >According to the wording in the record, did Mary Davis, give Administrator >rights to Edmund Butler (is this what "in right of" means)? > >If Edmund Butler is not Elizabeth Gummerson's husband (ex), does anyone know >who her husband was? Doug, As you know in 1749 Mary Parke was not yet a Davis - her name would not have been listed as Davis in will written in 1749 since at that time she was Mary Parke. They would not have known that John Parke would die in 1758 and that she would marry John Davis and become Mary Davis. This is an impossibility to be the Mary who was the wife of John Parke II. Hampshire/Frederick County Friends, Need some help regarding the court record that follows (I have reason to believe that the Mary Davis below (1st husband, John Park II, 1707-1758) may be my 6th GGM). My Questions: In your opinion, would Edmund Butler as listed below in the court record, be a previous husband of Elizabeth Gummerson or a court-appointed representative (does word descendant refer to Elizabeth or Edmund)? According to the wording in the record, did Mary Davis, give Administrator rights to Edmund Butler (is this what "in right of" means)? If Edmund Butler is not Elizabeth Gummerson's husband (ex), does anyone know who her husband was? I am trying to determine whether my Mary's maiden name (2nd husband was John Davis) is BUTLER or GUMMERSON! Mary Davis was still living and approximately 40 years of age at the time of Elizabeth Gummerson's will. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Court records on Mary Davis from Northern Neck records in Frederick County, VA - 1749: Administration of the Estate of ELIZABETH GUMMERSON deceased is granted EDMUND BUTLER in right of MARY DAVIS, the descendants Daughter, he having taken the Oath of an Administrator and Entered into and Executed a Bond according to Law. 39/17 Gummerson Admin. granted Ordered that JOHN SUMMERS, WILLIAM BOLING, WILLIAM DULING, and WILLIAM JEWELL or and three of them being Sword Inventory and appraise the Estate of ELIZABETH GUMMERSON IN Current Money and the Administrator do return the same to the next Court. 39/18 Appraisers Sincerely, Doug Park Hurricane, WV
Listers, I am forwarding the below reply to a fellow lister on to my lists. I believe that it is appropriate, as I have seen several similar questions from begining researchers and hope that the suggestions will benefit many new listers. I also can not emphasize enough: Please include as much info in your postings as possible. We are researching a spectrum of times and locations in history. It is essential to include, in addition to names, locations (state, county, town, etc.) and dates to the best of your knowledge (at least century, early, mid, late century is better, and decades are ever better). Good luck to all in your research. Chris I have been tracing my Robinson line for just over a year now and believe I have established connections back to Christopher of Hewick in the 1600s. This Robinson line (of Scotish descent) came over from Northern England. They settled in VA and most appear to have remained in this area until the late 1700's, early 1800's. There is a history that reports that two brothers to my, gggg-father, John T. Robinson, moved to TN abt. 1800. Also find other Robinsons that made their way to TN, KY, and probably NC area. Sorry, I can not be of more help, but keep up the search and if you can get back a generation or two, you might be able to connect to another line. That was my break. Keep posting, make sure to include locations (state, county, town, etc.) and dates to the best of your knowledge. There are alot of free records at the public library, indexed in ways that you couldn't even imagine. (Birth records indexed by both child,s name and mother's maiden name, etc.) Also, LDS (Later Day Saints) may be a good source if you have one locally. They sould have alot of local records and can order most other records (census, birth, death, marriage, property, etc.) in their circulation. Every state has different records, but in my experience most states were listing birth places of parents (at least state) on children's birth certificates by the 1900s. If you can obtain a birth certificate of one of Annie Lee's children, either, probably on microfilm at the library for the early 1900s, or from the state (probably only cost a couple of dollars), I think you would be on your way to locating the birth place of your Annie Lee. Hopefully, you will also get a county of birth for her, as you may find that her birth record in the 1800s is on file with the county rather than state. Also can check marriage records on file with the county. Again, don't know about NC records, so you might get more help from someone that has worked with these. Check out www.lds.org for access to 1880 census online, also limited marriage records, etc. Also, check out www.genweb.com and links to states and counties for look ups and fellow researchers. Hope this helps. Get in touch if you need anything else. Good luck, Chris P.S. Hope you don't mind if I forward these suggestions on to my lists in case they can be of help to others. _________________________________________________________________ Find high-speed net deals comparison-shop your local providers here. https://broadband.msn.com
