Millie, Unrelated to this story, but I see you have Snodgrass ancestors. My maternal grandfather was a Snodgrass down from Joseph Snodgrass of Botetourt county Va. I am traveling today, so don't have my files, but the first Joseph was born in 1711, I believe. Are these yours? Hi, I am looking for the birth record of George Washington LUTTRELL born Feb 6, 1865. I am trying to confirm where he was born, which I believe was Frederick County, Virginia, and his parents' names. Does anyone have access who can do a lookup? I am also interested if his siblings show up - James b. abt. 1856, Virginia b. abt. 1869 and Sarah b. abt. 1871. The 2 girls I believe were born in West Virginia, but James and George were born in Virginia. They also had 2 other siblings who died too young to show up in a census. The parents' names I have are Leonard and Elizabeth LUTTRELL. Thanks for any help you can provide. Lisa Milhaven LMMilhaven@hvc.rr.com
Jerry and hopefully others I am Jo Anne W. Martin and I posted these messages yesterday and today on Frederick, MD, Washington Co, MD and Johnson Roots web mail list Maybe we have a connection because of the area Following are copies of my posts June 18,3004 [MDFR] RE;Thomas Johnson Information need to find the parents of Thomas Johnson and ? other information about this Johnson family. There are so many Thomas Johnsons but this is mine; and this is what I have to work with. Thomas Johnson was born on or abt. September 16, 1774 in MD or VA, died in Montgomery CO., Indiana on April 22,1854. Married on June 12, 1800 Washington CO. MD. to Catherine Nichol/s. Catherine was born on May 19, 1777 in MD, Christening: Nov 16, 1777, German Reform Church Frederick, MD and died Feb.28, 1862 Boone, CO. Indiana. She is the daughter of Michael Nichol b. Dec 30,1742, Lancaster, PA. and Maria Catherine Sheppard. The 1800 census shows Thomas and Catherine living near Michael Nichol in Cavetown area. Thomas and Catherine's daughter Elizabeth Margaret Johnson born in VA on June 5, 1820 near Harpers Ferry, and married David Beasley on March 21, 1839, Crawfordsville, Montgomery CO., Indiana. Elizabeth died Feb. 05, 1877 in Blue Springs, Otoe CO., Nebraska. I believe there must be other siblings for Elizabeth but have not been able to confirm any. Think Elizabeth had a least one brother or uncle in the Indiana area as a Joseph Johnson attested to her being allowed to marry (age) on a document, which still is in the Montgomery CO., Court House, Crawfordsville, Indiana. Thomas Johnson is listed on the 1850 Montgomery CO. Union Township, Indiana Census as born in VA and that is also true for wife Catherine. It also states he and Catherine are the same age 75 but Catherine is 73 at the time of the Census. In the 1860 Boone Co. Census the widow Catherine is living with Elizabeth and her husband David Beasley. Catherine's age is given as 83 years and birthplace as MD. LDS also shows Thomas as MD and gave a date of 1773 for his birth. The date of Sept 16, 1774 was the result of taking his years, months and days on his tombstone and going backwards for the date. In Catherine's case this has been accurate. Both are buried in Shannondale Cemetery, Montgomery Co. Indiana along with some of the Beasley children. I appreciate and thank all of you taking the time to read this and hope some one can help as I am stumped. Jo Anne W. Martin June19,2004 in regards to reply to Gov. Thomas Johnson, MD From: "Jo Anne Martin" <giovanna@centurytel.net> To: "Laurie Wolfe" <LaurieWolfe@adelphia.net> Subject: Re: [MDFR] RE;Thomas Johnson Information Date: Saturday, June 19, 2004 10:42 AM Laurie, thanks for interest. I have wondered if my Thomas may be a grandson, grandnephew, distant cousin or some other connection to the Gov. Thomas Johnson Family as they seem to be living near the area of the furnaces around 1800 (Catoctin) and in 1820 (Birth of Elizabeth Margaret Johnson) near Harper's Ferry, VA (WV) at Sandy Hook or Keep Tryst, MD where I understand there also was a furnace. Elizabeth always lists her birthplace as VA which would mean the south or west side as the rivers come into the Harper's Ferry area. I was in hopes of somebody spotting a connection or one of Elizabeth's older siblings remaining in the Maryland/Va area. I have this great gap between the 1800 Washington CO. MD Census and the 1840 Montgomery CO. Indiana Census where Thomas as HOH (and Catherine) are living with what appears either a son or daughter and their spouse and the grandchildren. Elizabeth M.(Johnson) and David Beasley are not living with her parents in 1840. Due to the lar! ge number of Thomas Johnsons in this MD/VA/ WV/PA area and the gaps in what I have this is difficult. Please Thomas Johnson will you stand up and tell me your family history, Your G.G.G. granddaughter and hers ( your ) descendants are waiting to hear your story. Jo Anne W. I am researching members of these families who lived in Hampshire and Frederick counties in the 1800s. Specifically I am looking for information on Amos (and Amos, Jr.) Johnson/Johnston and Jeremiah Hicks (as well as his brother Moses). All lived on or around Timber Ridge. I am searching for John Crawford born in 1787 in Frederick Cty Va. His wife was Martha J (Shepherd) born in Frederick Cty Va in 1787. They married April 28, 1818 in Frederick Cty Va. They had a son Jesse Crawford, born in 1824 in Va, he was my great grandfather. I would like to know if they had other children, and if there was a connection to Col William Crawford, born in 1722, and who was killed by indians in Ohio in 1782. I believe John and William were related. Family lore says Col William was my great great great great grandfather. I would be grateful for any help. Thank you K Christian SC

Who are the parents of Margaret Ellen SNODGRASS who was born on the banks of the Potomac River in 1825. Her parents died when she was young and she was raised by an uncle. We also know that she had a brother, Henry Snodgrass (born 1816) who died in Belmont Co., OH in 1895. According to an 1898 article about John Henry SCHULTY, he married Margaret Ellen Snodgrass on Jan. 1, 1846 while he was working in Hampshire Co., VA. The marriage was performed on the ice of the Potomac River by Billy Welch, a Methodist revivalist. John Henry Schulty was born in Germany in 1818 and came to America by himself when he was 15 years old. He worked on the B & O and the C & O Railroads for several years before he married. It appears that the family is listed in the 1850 Hampshire Co. census (p. 244b) as Thomas (30), Ellen (25), John (4), and Henry (2) SHULTZ. Margaret Ellen (Snodgrass) and John Henry Schulty left VA and moved to IA in 1856. She died in 1897 and he died 1913 in Washington Co., IA. Children included: John William, George, John Henry Jr., John Thomas, Mary Margaret, James, Charles, Samuel, and Amanda Schulty. John William and George died when small. The first five were born in VA and the last four were born in Washington Co., IA. Many thanks. Millie in OH

Jane, This particular deed that I am looking at was for Wm Dobson, 2 Grants, issued 23 Feb 1784 and 23 Feb 1785. Both on North Branch Potomac and west of the mouth of the South Branch. These bordered John Walker's corner and Michael Cresap and Michael Cresap Jr--and Cresap's land was on the road leading to James Topley's. Then there is another deed for Wm Dobson in Hampshire County on Green Spring Run, adjoining Michael Cresap dated 16 June 1766. And William Dobson Hampshire County, 14 June 1766 on draught of N Branch Potomac 300 acres adjoining Polson's land. I guess I am trying to decide if Wm Dobson, John Walker, and MIchael Cresap were all about the same location--Green spring Run and Green Spring Valley, and about where the North and South Branches fork off. And Isaac Johnson's grant dated 7 December 1804 located on a mountain east of Green Spring Valley, adjoining the HEIRS of William Dobson, deceased. (Note:--does anyone know how I might follow up on his Estate Records, or where to find the deed or deeds that transferred ownership of these properties after his death--I assume he must have died in 1800-1804, since this was still deeded to his heirs--It sure would be a big blessing if names of his heirs are on a document somewhere!) Then there is a John Dodson of Augusta county, Fairfax Grants of 11 nov 1754 and 30 Sep 1756 on Mill Creek and Stony Creek--Adjacent to Mary Allen (I think this location is not very far from the ones for William Dobson, although John's grants are earlier dates--more to the southeast?) I have no idea who this William and John Dobson/Dotson are, and if they are related to each other or not. I am trying to find the father of my Richard Dotson, who was born in that area, served as an Indian Spy during the Rev War, and returned to Hampshire county afterward, before moving on farther south in West Va. I am just working on a hunch, as Richard was reported to be in New Creek, Hampshire county after the war, and this is in the same general geographic area. Also have William Anderson of "Anderson's Bottom" Hampshire Co--on the Northern Branch of Potomac River the land lying on the River and extending to Knobley Mountain and along the mountain Grant dated 12 July 1762 (he was there by 1730--) And his son, Thomas Anderson,Hampshire Co--also on the Northern Branch Potomac and extending to Knobley Mountain and along the mountain side. His was adjacent to Col. Martin and Richard Stafford. These properties were about 5 miles south of Ft. Cumberland, and just across the river from Cresaptown. These deeds are fascinating, and I keep going back to the Library of Virginia site to look at more. There are so many, and a lot of them also have images of the original survey, and a lot of others have the original surveys available, (I assume by writing to the Library). Sandra, You and I are both looking into some of the same neighbors in Hampshire Co. I have an interest in Richard Paulson/Polson because his wife was a sister of Joseph Williams. Joseph Williams and Richard Paulson were on a 1733 list of taxables of Monocosie Hundred, Maryland. Richard Paulson, Providence Williams, Remembrance Williams were all in Frederick Co. (now Berkeley Co.) near Shepherdstown before they obtained land near where the South and North Branch of the Potomac meet in what's now Hampshire Co. Richard Paulson owned a large tract of land near Sheperdstown with Joseph Mounts and Josiah Jones; granted to them in 1734. John Walker was the administrator of Richard Paulson's estate, admin bond signed 9 Nov 1752, Frederick Co., VA - WB 2, Pg 72. Parts of these families left the area in the 1760's and moved to Newberry, SC. Did your Dobson also come from the Winchester, Shepherdstown area before moving to the North Branch? Also, know that if your Dobson grant was issued in 1766, it meant the he could have been on that land long before that. He had to get a warrant, then a survey, then the grant was issued once he made it down to the Proprietor's office at Greenway Court, White Post, VA. From beginning to end it could take many years. For instance, Providence Williams got his warrant and survey for his property on the North Branch in 1752, but did not receive the grant until 1760. I have been getting posts from the Old Frederick Co Web site. However, I have noticed that when I post to one of these lists, my message doesn't come back to me because my ISP tags the message that is sent from me to the list, and ultimately to myself as SPAM and kicks it out. Regarding John Walker, I have a note to myself to look up a Grant for a John Walker in Hampshire County, Virginia. It was for 200 acres on the North Branch Potomac, adjoining the Richard Poulson Survey. According to this note, the original Grant should be available to be viewed and copied at the web site for the Library of Virginia. It is in the Northern Neck Grants, 1757-1762, on page 255. I don't have the date. My interest in John Walker is that this land adjoins Poulson, and in another deed, there is a Polson whose land is adjacent to a William Dobson of Hampshire County (the subject of my research). The Dobson Grant was dated 14 June 1766, so Walker must have been there first. I have downloaded and printed the Dobson document. Still have to do John Walker's, however anyone should be able to go to the Library web site, and access the Northern Neck Deeds. Try this link: <http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/lonnabout.htm> I hope it prints blue in the message. It doesn't show up as a link in my version. Sandra Paser sandijay@mindspring.com
"A History of the Valley of Virginia" By Samuel Kercheval Page 96 "Indian Incursions and Massacres" Logan, the celebrated Indian, killed Benjamin Bowman, and took Humphrey Worstead prisoner. He compelled the latter to halter several of his own and Bowman's horses, and took them off. At a battle at Oldtown, JOHN WALKER killed an Indian and wounded another. WALKER cut out a part of the dead Indian's flesh from the thick part of his thigh, and threw it to his dog, who ate it. He otherwise mutilated his body; and thrust parts of it into his mouth. Could this be a relative or child of James WALKER who was deeded on May 15th, 1753 property in Lord Fairfax's Winchester Addition?
I have been on the list for several weeks now and have only seen two postings. I am looking for information on John Walker who is on the 1744 fee book list of James Wood. Marcia
