Hi - I'm looking for information on a Williams family from the area of Old Frederick Co. VA. I ask anyone with Williams connections to please look over my information for any possible clues or connections to this family and it's origins. I've long suspected this family to have some sort of connection to Presley Williams b: 1790 - who resided at one time in Frederick Co. VA in the 1830's - 1840's - but this is purely speculation. The earliest Williams I have documented is Sanford Williams b: 3/18/1810 in VA - according to handwritten family records. He first appears on his marriage record for Warren Co. VA on 8/7/1837 - married to Sophia Curry, then subsequently on the Warren VA PP tax lists and 1840 census. He does not appear on the Warren Co. VA tax list until 1838. Despite the fact his marriage took place in 1837, he had a son William Franklin Williams, born 2/26/1835. William's death record and obituary both state he was the son of Sanford Williams and Sophia Curry. It also states he was born in Warren Co. VA, but obviously this is incorrect - but I suspect the place of his birth is probably "Old Frederick" Co. The family was thought to reside in the north eastern portion of Warren Co. in the Happy Creek area. They left Warren Co. VA in 1848 and were first documented in Morgan Co. OH in the 1850 census. They are later found in Hancock Co. OH, finally in Clinton Co. OH. note: Sanford Wil! liams never owned property - either in VA or OH, was illiterate, was a farmer. Family members given names are unusual in some cases and some middle names appear to be surnames. Later generations are known to have repeatedly used many of the same given names for their children. Family information is thus: Sanford (Sandford, Santford) Williams b: 3/18/1810 in VA (or even possibly MD, according to some census records) d: 5/18/1899 in OH m: Sophia Curry b: 10/27/1811 in VA, d: 4/7/1889 in OH children: William Franklin Williams b:2/26/1835 in VA d: 2/17/1913 in Hardin Co. OH James Jackson Williams b: 2/8/1838 in Warren Co. VA d: 8/10/1915 in Warren Co. OH Idress Ellen Williams b: 4/18/1840 in Warren Co. VA d: 3/24/1918 in Wood Co. OH Minerva Ann Williams b: 3/22/1841 in Warren Co. VA d: 4/20/1919 in Allen Co. OH Charles Westly Williams b: 2/26/1843 in Warren Co. VA d: 5/24/1920 in Clinton Co. OH Sarah Ann Williams b: 8/8/1845 in Warren Co. VA d: 4/10/1927 in Auglaize Co. OH Hezekiah Taylor Williams b: 9/14/1847 in Warren Co. VA d: fall of 1856 in OH John Russell Williams b:8/8/1849 in OH d: 4/17/1929 in Lucas Co. OH Ellora (Laura) Josephine Williams b: 3/26/1851 in OH d: 4/30/1923 in Auglaize Co. OH Eliza Jane Williams b: 11/1/1854 in OH d: 2/10/1925 in Eastland Co. TX Mary Elizabeth Williams b: 3/13/1856 in OH d: 4/14/1929 in Clinton Co. OH If anyone has any information or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you! Brenda Cape Coral, FL
John, I think you are on the right track.....as a matter of fact, troll every county in the area. The Ashby's came from Ashby's Gap. With one catch.....there were some that came from NC through the same area. Will send you some connections to look for at Ashby's Gap SE of Winchester, VA. All for now....will send Peters Quarterly by email. This will show some connected families and locales. Hope we can help you. John Peters Canandaigua, NY
If both parties were born in Maryland and lived in Ohio, then why are you asking here? Do you know they came through here? If not, then why not research in OH and MD since you know that is where they lived? -----Original Message----- From: jashby@wolfnet.net [mailto:jashby@wolfnet.net] Sent: Monday, February 21, 2005 12:23 PM To: OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Abel Ashby Hello. Can someone explain to me in 1860 how far would Brucetown, Fredrick Co., VA be from Mill Creek, Berkeley Co., VA. I have one part of the family in Brucetown, during the 1860 census, and then my Great, Great Grandmother's parents are in Mill Creek so I was curious how far we are talking about. Hi Nancy, I saw that same article in the Martinsburg, Journal too, not all counties will be on there at first, just the ones with the best information but in yesterdays paper, there was an article which said that WVA is not "an open record" state. I did not know this so I thought I would pass it on to the board. Vickey
An article appeared in last week's *Hampshire Review* (26 Jan 2005), Hampshire County WV's weekly newspaper, about a database being developed by the WV Division of Culture and History. The database will initially contain images of birth, marriage and death certificates from Harrison, Mineral, Pendleton, Hardy, Calhoun and Gilmer Counties. (Hardy and Mineral Counties were both once part of Hampshire County, which was part of Frederick County VA originally). This phase of the project is expected to be finished within a few months, and the division hopes to add other counties' records later. Marriage and death records will be restricted for privacy reasons to 1970 and prior, and birth records will be available only through 1930. The database will be installed on the agency's web site: www.wvculture.org. Deputy Commissioner Ginny Painter said that she estimates that 2/3's of the visitors to the state archives are conducting genealogical research. - Nancy Upshaw
I would try land records, which go back to 1772 in Berkeley Co., and 1743 in Frederick Co., and are indexed--see what Hardwicks were around. Some deeds mention family relations (deeds of partition, etc.). Another course would be to see if any probate records are available for any Hardwicks. This might at least give you an idea of possible candidates for Mary's family. Cemetery record transcriptions might also produce something, also tax records (which I believe are available back to about the 1780s in both counties). These records have all been filmed by the LDS (Mormon Church) and can be viewed at your local Family History Center. See the catalog at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp. There is also a link there to find out what Family History Center would be nearest to you. Good luck! Hi listers, I'm new & am interested in knowing if anyone has found details of a Hardwick family in old Frederick Co. which became Berkeley Co in 1772. I have a Mary Hardwick b 6 Aug 1766 of Berkeley Co. Va which is obviously not quite right given the county formation date. Mary married James Schooling 29 Dec 1784 in New Market, Loudoun Co VA. The parents of James Schooling evidently died in Berkeley Co. But if Mary was born in 1766 and didn't crawl out from under a rock I would think she had parents around there somewhere?? Can anybody help with this? I know there aren't a lot of records for those very early days but don't know till you ask, right? Thanks for any help anyone can give, or direction of where to go! I plan to move in several months and am trying to get rid of as many books as possible prior to the move. I am also getting old and have decided NOT to conduct any more research or write any more books. I sold the three book that I offered for sale last week and have some more for sale this week. "The Valley Road--the Story of Virginia Hot Springs" by Fay Ingalls (1882-1957). The book has 293 pages and was first published in March 1949. The book is a history book but it has some names in it that could be of interest to a genealogist. The book does not have a name index. There is lots of info. in the book about the world famous Homestead Hotel. "Three Hull Brothers" by Eugene Hull. It has 180 pages and a name index. It is only of interest to people that have the Hull surname or Hull ancestors. "Jacob Alt" by Clara Mae (Alt) Ross. The book has 580 pages and a name index. It is only of interest to people that have the Alt (Ault) or Alt (Ault) ancestors. I should note that if you are a descendant of Valentine Alt--don't buy the book. That's a different line. I know the author and will send you her address if you want to buy a copy. I plan to keep the copy that she sold to me. "Buzzard and Alt Families" compiled by Monte Buzzard. The book has 207 pages and a name index. It is of interest to anyone researching the Buzzard or Alt (Ault) surnames. I once had 500 books for sale but am now down to the last seventeen. Once those last 17 copies are sold, I won't have any more copies printed. I just checked the index and found lots of people listed with these surnames: Radabaugh Arbogast Hull Grimes Zickafoose
I saw a query earlier whereas someone was asking about the relationship between the HUMES and WATKINS families. Don't recall who ask but this may be of interest as it appears that the relationship between Jane Humes and Elinor Watkins is explained in these property descriptions which indicate points/numbered locations on the map and the related deeds/yrs. In THE FAIRFAX PROPRIETARY (The Northern Neck, The Fairfax Manors, and Beginnings of Warren County In Virginia with maps) by Josiah Look Dickinson, it list the following deeds with comments: Humes, John, Margaret, w. & Thos., s., S., A-521-1774 Humes, Thos., Jane, w., & Elinor Watkins, gd. Of Jane Hume, S., A-518-1774 Humes, Thomas, Jenny & Enoch Watkins, S., H-261-1787
These individuals married just outside of Pickaway Co., OH in Franklin Co. close to several families from the Shenandoah area. Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? Aaron Henry m. Maria Butcher, 18 APR 1826, by Henry Mathews Elizabeth Henry m. William Clevenger, 23 MAY 1822, by Richard Courtright John Henry m. Rachael Davidson, 12 APR 1821, by Richard Courtright John Henry m. Hannah Codner, 13 FEB 1823, by Richard Courtright
To the list, Then I will ask, is there anyone out there that can tell me if they have any information on an Anthony Hays. He is my Great, Great Grandfather. I have him listed in the 1850 census living in Brucetown, VA as an apprentice shoeman. It says he was married by D. Francis Spriggs In the 1860 census he would be married to Margaret Ann (Payne) with his son, William F., age 1. It states that they are living in Frederick Co., VA at that time. I have not been able to find out any information on him before 1850. I do not know where he may have been born or his parents names. The information that I have seems to point to the fact that he may have been born around 1835. I do not have any information for him after 1880. I do not even know where he is buried. I know that the family settled around the Hedgesville, Martinsburg, WV area. Around the time of the 1880 census the family is living in Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., WV. I would appreciate any help with this. I have been working on this man for about 20 years.
