    1. Deeds in 1840's
    2. Karen Hangsleben
    3. I was lucky enough to find a few deeds from the 1840's where my relative John R. Nelson was buying property in Winchester. The first he bought as a "trustee" for Mary Catherine Nelson - there was no relationship stated. Later on property is sold to a Robert Deshaw Trust. When I read the document, I began wondering about trusts established in the 1840's. Robert Deshaw was purchasing a property for the benefit of his "infant" son's use. I am supposing that "infant" in this instance means "minor". Can someone explain the legalese of this? John R. Nelson named a daughter Mary and it might well have been Mary Catherine born about 1835. I'd sure like to think I'd found his mother's name rather than some legal maneuver to get out of paying a property tax or? Any ideas? Karen Nelson Hangsleben

    1. Apology
    2. This is to apologize for a e-mail sent last Wednesday to this and other lists sent by my niece but written by me and I never intended it to be sent. Once written, my anger was released and I thought better. However, my niece can go from Lady to the word use for female dog in 4.2 seconds. I did not realize she had sent the message until the next morning. That being say, some good things came form the e-mail. 1. After a discussion with AOL, I now get it for $7.00 less. 2. Many e mails were sent in agreement. 3. The lady who ripped me off has now listed my research as hers on her web site, with the a Mulatto slave as the great grandfather of her husband. She said she did the research herself. 4. She sent to me updated information about her family with birthdays and maiden names of living people. Smart enough to ripped me off, dumb enough to send that information to a total stranger. On the downside after doing genealogical research for thirty-three years and having two articles published in The American Genealogist, I will now quit genealogy. I will leave it to the new breed of Internet Genealogists that have no sense of right or wrong. So no need to unsubscribe me for an apology, I will do that soon myself. Thank You Tonto Bernstein

    1. Feed up with getting ripped off.
    2. It started with Family Tree Maker. After one puts in 100 names, the software ask for one to send the data to them. Most smart people ignore the request but not all. The brother of the person I helped with my data, hit the send button and therefore giving my data that took years and years to collect to this corporation. Now, people are sourcing World Family Tree with data collected by my cousin and myself. My Family.com, Ancestry.com, Ancestery.com, Family Tree Maker.com, Rootsweb.web, genealogy.com are all .coms owned by My Family.com, Inc at Provo,UT e-mail pr@myfamilyinc.com. In case, you agree with me and would like to let them know what you think. The monopoly is so great that one cannot go any where on Internet without have one of these getting send to one of these website. Another person recently, wanted to be correct about there direct line. They promised to credit my cousin and I with research if I would supply the data. They did not keep their promised, it was easier to plagiarize. Well, Rootsweb does allow for post-em to be place on these website. At least, these people won't get away with the plagiarism. I agree with the last elected President of this country who had the nickname Give'm Hell Harry, when he said I don't give anyone hell, I tell the truth and they think it is hell

    3. Found 5 items of interest to me regarding John R. NELSON circa 1840. Might a fellow researcher have any of these documents that involve one of these sales? The names of the parties were: Honara Grimshaw, George McCord, George Forney, L.T. Moore and Robert Deshaw. This information was taken from an Index to Deeds No. 1 - Winchester, VA filmed by LDS and available from the FHC. Thanks, Karen Nelson Hangsleben

    1. Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Berkeley Co.
    2. In February of 2004 the Berkeley County Historical Society's Archives and Research Center opened at 136 East Race Street in Martinsburg (next to the Belle Boyd House). This opened up part of the Belle Boyd House for additions to the museum - so there are now new displays for you to see, including a World War II museum and Native American museum. An excellent time to visit would be Saturday May 14 during the Belle Boyd Birthday celebration (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) when there will be live musical entertainment and you can meet General Stonewall Jackson, his wife Anna, his aide Sandy Pendleton and Belle Boyd herself (all portrayed by living historians of course), as well as take a tour of the Belle Boyd House and museum. The price of admission is just right - its all free. I am a board member of the Berkeley County Historical Society - and the Archives/Research Center is worth the trip - more materials, and easier to find with someone there to assist you - or to leave you alone - while you research. We have many recently added books, and, of course, microfilm for your research. Regular hours of both the museum and the archives/research center are Monday - Tuesday, Thursday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don Silvius Berkeley County resident Don Silvius Co-coordinator Shenandoah County, Virginia GenWeb Project <http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/vashenan.html>

    1. HARRELL, PAGET, CALFEE
    2. I am searching for any information on the following surnames -- HARRELL/HAROLD/HERROL, PAGET/PADGET/PADGETT and CALFEE. I am specifically interested in the 1750 to 1800 time period. I have found several deeds in Frederick Co. between Reuben PAGET and his wife, Elizabeth and Jacob HARRELL. Land adjoined John CALFEE. I know that these families intermarried and I am trying to get back another generation to the parents of Reuben HARRELL b. 1750 Shenandoah Co. I have reason to believe that Jacob HARRELL was his father but can't prove it yet. It is thought that Jacob HARRELL might have been married to Martha PAGET a sister of Reuben PAGET. Reuben PAGET was married to Elizabeth CALFEE. There were also a lot of HURST in the same area and they are also married into the above mentioned families. ANY connection to these lines would be wonderful and if you have data or suggestions of where to look for more information on these people I would appreciate hearing from you. 1. Dobson, Walker, Cresap at North Potomac
    2. Sandra Paser
    3. I spent quite a lot of time a couple of years ago looking up the VA land grants with these names. Trying to see if Dobson was possibly the father of my Richard Dotson (born 1752 in Shenandoah County; died 1847 in Doddridge Co. Served several terms in the Rev. War as an Indian Spy in West Pa, and (West) Virgina. "Returned" to Hampshire Co for a few years after the Rev. War.) Haven't been able to prove a link to William Dobson. I couldn't find a deed or will abstract where William mentioned a son Richard. I thought it would be helpful if there would be a way to lay out the lands described in the patents onto maps to see where these 3 names were neighbors. Cresap we know was a land speculator. He is on MANY deeds. I don't know how to make plat maps using land descriptions, so just gave up on the project. Sandra Paser sandijay@mindspring.com

    1. William Wright, Land Grant in 1754 Frederick Co., VA
    2. D & J
    3. I am looking for anyone who can give me additional information on my William Wright. I don't know where he was born, nor do I know who his parents and siblings were. I do know he was given a land grant in 1754 in Frederick County, Virginia. He sold his land and settled in Berkeley County, Virginia when that county branched off from Frederick. He lived near the Potomac River in Shepherdstown until he moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky where he subsequently died between 1803-1806. I know my William's wife's name was Martha, but I know nothing else about her. It is "supposed" my William Wright was of the Scot/Irish Presbyterian persuasion, but that is not at all for sure. I am also looking for the early church records that would show names of members, etc., for the following churches: 1) Bullskin Presbyterian Church ca. 1736 to 1768 (old congregation) 2) Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church ca. beg. ? to 1768 (bef. Bullskin splitup) & 1768 to 1795 (aft. Bullskin splitup) 3) Elk Branch Presbyterian Church ca. 1768 to 1795 (new Congregation) Can anyone help me with my William Wright? 1. RE: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] GILL Family connection to ANDERSON family
    2. Karen Hangsleben
    3. Looking for a GILL researcher with a Winchester, VA connection to the family of Peter and Hannah Boacht ANDERSON of that place circa 1800. Wish to find a list of the children of this ANDERSON couple. I understand one of their daughters from this typically large family had wed a GILL. Maybe learning about the GILL connection will help me locate my own connection to this ANDERSON family. Their daughter Hannah Anderson wed John Richard Nelson circa 1832. I have yet to find out where this marriage took place. Perhaps knowing more about the GILL connection will help me break through this brick wall? Thanks for all replies - Karen Nelson Hangsleben
