3. Bellinda, This is of no help to you but do you know if any of Hugh Pierce's grandchildren went to the Ohio country in the early 1800's, i.e, around 1801-1810ish? Sorry I don't know anymore about your earlier Pierce family. -----Original Message----- From: bellindambarnett@aol.com [mailto:bellindambarnett@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, November 30, 2005 3:02 PM To: OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Re: [PIERCE-L & Variants ] William Pierce of Westmoreland County Virginia Hello, I have EARLE-SYM(M)ON(D)S-HA(Y)LE(S)-BENNETT-ALLERTON-HOL(D)BROOK-WILLIAMS family group originally out of Northumberland/Westmoreland County, Virginia in the 1600s with my paternal 5th great grandfather, (Major) Samuel EARLE, III, being elected as the 1st Member of the House of Burgesses ever elected from Frederick County, Virginia, (holding the seat that would later be held by (General) George WASHINGTON. During the same time period that (Major) Samuel EARLE, III was a Burgess from Frederick County, VA, there was a man by the name of Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) who was born in abt. 1751 in Frederick County. Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) married a Cherokee woman named Sophia/Sofia HUNTER/poss. aka BOWLES. It is believed that Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) and Sophia/Sofia HUNTER/poss. aka BOWLES are my paternal 4th great grandparents but not directly connected to my EARLE lineage; however, there are a few other connecting aspects concerning families that leads me to believe there could be connection further back in time. Is it possible that the aforementioned Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) might be descended from one of the PIERCE men that you mentioned who were in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Would you know of any of them or any PIERCE men related or unrelated to them that were in Frederick County, VA in the mid-1700s who might be the father of the aforementioned Hugh PIERCE, (RS.) In addition to my EARLE and connected paternal lines in Westmoreland County, VA, I also am descended from my paternal 9th great grandfather John PAYNE first of Old Rappahnnock, (later Richmond,) County, VA in the early to mid-1600s and then found in Westmoreland County, VA as well as maternal lineage from Vincent COX and 1st wife through daughter, Hannah COX, and 1st husband, George LAMKIN, whom Hannah married before her 2nd marriage to Dr. Samuel DEMOURVILLE and their descendants married into the PAYNE and RUST/RUSH families. My descent from George LAMKIN and Hannah COX continues through my HATTON/HATTEN family group out of 1600s Jamestown into Norfolk, VA into MS into LA and the aforementioned RUST/RUSH family also married into the EARLE family, circuitously, through the marriage of my paternal 7th great grandfather, Samuel EARLE, I, (1st marriage to my 7th great grandmother, Bridge HALE,) and his 2nd marriage to Mat(t)ilda ALLERTON, (both Samuel EARLE, I and Mat(t)ilda A! LLERTON being from Westmoreland County, VA. Still looking for connection that I believe exists for Mat(t)ilda ALLERTON to Isaac ALLERTON, Jr., (immigrant from England to New England in early 1600s,) who later lived in Westmoreland County, VA. After the death of her 1st husband, Samuel EARLE, I, Mrs. Mat(t)ilda ALLERTON EARLE married 2nd husband, William RUST, and after the death of William RUST, Mrs. Mat(t)ilda ALLERTON EARLE RUST married 3rd husband, John BENNETT, (believed to be another of my paternal 7th great grandfathers through his 1st marriage for whom I have no wife's name.) John BENNETT is believed to have been the father of Phillis/Phyllis BENNETT who married Samuel EARLE, II, (son of the aforementioned Samuel EARLE, I and his 1st wife, Bridget HALE.) Any information on any of the aforementioned items would be wonderful with special concentration on the Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) born in abt. 1751 in Frederick County, Virginia and possible names of his parents. I greatly look forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to illuminate this situation. In advance, I thank you. This is one of the earliest Pierce families in that state. The participation of a descendant of this family in our project would provide a genetic profile of one of the oldest Va. lines. The following family profile comes from various internet sources: CAPT. WILLIAM1 PIERCE came to Virginia in the Sea Venture in 1610 with Sir Thomas Gates and his wife, Mrs. Jane Pierce, in the Blessing. He was captain of the guard at Jamestown in 1617. His daughter Jane was third wife of John Rolfe. His house, a wooden building at Jamestown, was in 1624 "the fairest in all Virginia". He had a fine garden in which he raised abundance of figs and other vegetables. George Sandys had a room in his house in which he wrote poetry and raised silkworms. In 1618 he patented 650 acres at Mulberry Island, to which he removed and had a house there, as shown by a land grant for 2,100 acres in 1643. In 1632, he stood sixth in the Council of Sir John Harvey, and in 1646, "Capt. William Pierce, Esq.", was second in standing. Mr. William2 Pierce, who patented lands in Northumberland, was doubtless his son. He was a major and justice of Westmoreland county. He married Sarah Underwood, daughter-in-law of Capt. John Upton, of Isle of Wight county. His will, dated February 23, 1701, was proved in Westmoreland county in 1702. It names grandson William, son of son John Pierce, grandson Samuel Bayley; daughters Elizabeth Bridges, Margaret Graham and Mary Rowsy; devisees Pierce and Stanly Gower. Wills of Westmoreland Co. VA 1654-1800 by Augusta B. Fothergill "Col. Wm. Pierce of Cople, gent.; 20 Feb 1701 probated 7 Apr 1702. His son John3 Pierce had issue, William4 Pierce, under age in 1707, who made his will in 1733, naming Joseph5 Pierce as his second son. This last married Sarah E. Ransdell and among his children were son Ransdell and daughters Martha, Sally Ransdell, Margaret, married elder R. H. Herndon, Fannie and Sibella (married Samuel Templeman). Captain Joseph5 Pierce (born 1719; died 1798), by his will, dated January 1, 1796, liberated a large number of slaves. 1. Elizbeth (Somerville?) Shutt
2. Hello, I am a descendant of Elizabeth Shutt whose husband, Henry Shutt had apprenticed himself to learn the hatmakers trade in Shepherdstown, VA (West VA) Elizabeth's records indicate that she was born 6 May 1779 in Virginia. She had a granddaughter through her daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Shutt Hazell, Elizabeth Somerville Hazell. She had bestowed a special deed of gift to that granddaughter, of a young slave girl which was recorded in November Court of Orange County, NC in 1828. This leads this researcher to believe that the granddaughter was named for her, as she did not make similar deeds of gift to her many other grandchildren. Henry Shutt had lived in Boonesboro, Maryland, just across the river from Shepherdstown, WVA, and it seems reasonable that he had found his bride in the general area of his apprenticeship. He took his family from the area to settle into Hillsborough, NC in Orange County. Given the early date of Elizbeth Shutt's birth, it would seem that her family would have been included in the records of old Frederick County, VA. I am hoping that someone will recognize her family. Very best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC

2. A. I am looking for information on Abel Ashby and a possible father, James Ashby (See Below): B. This is the information that I found at one point and it is NOT verified and seems questionable. (See information in quotes immediately below): "ABEL ASHBY was born October 09, 1787 in Ft. Ashby, Maryland, and died May 09, 1846 in Warren Township, Ohio. He married HARRIET CONOWAY ASHBY November 28, 1811 in Steubenville, Ohio, daughter of GEORGE HAMMOND and DEBORAH HUTTON. (I have a suspicion that Harriet is the daughter of Charles Conaway, I am assuming that the Hammond reference was an error.) She was born 1790 in Maryland, and died October 03, 1854 in Wells Township, Ohio." C. I have recently come across the information below (in quotes): "Also, info from the MD Genealogical Society Bulletin: An August 1970 query --- "Ashby, Abel, b Winchester VA 10 Sep 1787 lived Steubenville OH. Believe his father to be James Ashby of Eastern Maryland." " D. I am posting on various groups in both Maryland and Virginia. I would appreciate any help. Thank you, John Ashby, Manawa, WI Originally from Youngstown, OH

3. From an online search I found this opinion from the Attorney General of VA which sheds some light: >It is my opinion that the only change created in this structure by the >enactment of § 15.1-796.1 was that, beginning on July 1, 1971, the city >sergeant would have the title of city sheriff.17 The General Assembly >adopted § 15.1-796.1 at its 1971 Special Session as a transition statute >to effect the changes in the titles of local officers brought about by >adoption of the 1971 Constitution. Under the 1902 Constitution, each city >was to elect a city sergeant,18 and each county was to elect a county >sheriff.19 The 1971 Constitution eliminated this distinction between >cities and counties. Article VII, § 4 of the 1971 Constitution requires >each county and city to elect a sheriff. Accordingly, the General Assembly >amended a number of statutes throughout the Code,20 including the sections >relating to the transition of towns to cities,21 to substitute the term >"city sheriff" for the term "city sergeant." http://www.oag.state.va.us/media%20center/Opinions/1999opns/jul998.htm There is more discussion there of the nature of a city sergeant. It seems to be the equivalent of a sheriff, but for a city rather than a county. Rhode Island has them too: >The City Sergeant works in conjunction with the City Clerk's Office in the >distribution of all docket and other agenda material for City Council >meetings. The City Sergeant's duties also include the service of writs, >summonses and other legal instruments under the direction of the City >Solicitor. http://www.providenceri.com/government/citydir.html Probably other places, too..... 2. marsha moses
3. I am interested in finding information on Edward Thomas who is found in Old Frederick County, Virginia in land records from 1749 until 1766. He is absolutely involved with a man named John Smith. Both men seem to be living on or close to Opequon Creek. John Smith is definitely recognized as being of the Quaker faith. In Edward's last land record in 1766 he and his wife, Sarah, are said to "be of Newberry County, SC". Does anyone know more about this man and his family? I suspect that he is the same Edward Thomas for whom I find land records in Newberry, SC....living near Isaac and Nehemiah Thomas....and I suspect that he is either the same Edward Thomas or the father of the Edward Thomas who is named in Nehemiah Thomas's will in Newberry SC when he leaves a bequest to his nephew, Edward Thomas son of Edward Thomas of NC. Thanks for any help that anyone can give me on this man. Marsha

1. LONG/LUNG prior to 1766-68 Augusta Co., VA
2. David W. Long
3. Greetings, New to the list and my research has led me to 1760 Augusta Co., Virginia when my earliest know anscester Henry LONG obtaind land between Peaked Mountain and Shenandoah River. Henry LONG married Catherine PENCE. Their daughter Caherine LONG was baptised at the Peaked Mountain (Reformed, Lutheran) Church. Records of Henry and Catherine selling their property (adjacent Peter Miller) to Augustise Price and Jacob Arkenbright can be found in Chaukley's and they then removed to Mecklenburg, Co., North Carolina by 1766-68. I have exhausted the online Chaukley Chronicals and have found a it possible that Henry is a brother of Paul LUNG. Paul was the eldest and heir of Philip LUNG. From my little bit of research of this area, a Philip and Paul LONG (Lung) were amoung some of the early settlers arriving around 1733 from Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania with an agent named Jacob Stover who recieved 10,000 acres from King George II and Lord Fairfax. Is this Jacob Stover related to the Rev. John Casper Stoever who performed early Lutheran marriages and babptisms in southern Pensylvania (Lancaster County) and who perfmed the baptisms of some of my related Pence family members? I am searching for reseachers who may have information relevant to my search, suggested readings and what not. Two books curently on my list are "Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia" by Cecil O'Dell and "The German element of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia" by John W. Wayland. If anyone knows of other publications with information on possible LONG family conections, I'm open to suggestion. I am particularly interested in the Robert Beatty (Beaty) and the John and Michael Crouse families. Robert Beatty married Jane E. Crouse. A Michael Crouse was a witness to the marriage of Robert and Jane in 1831. What was the relationship between Michael and Jane? What were the names and birthdates of the children in the John Crouse family who lived in Frederick Co. in late 1700's to early 1800's? Who was John Crouse's wife? Thanks Vickie There is a William Daniel on the 1789 Shenandoah county, VA. Tax >>> list. William Daniel had a wife named Massie William Daniel is on the one that covered the Massanutten Valley (today called Luray >> Valley) and Fort Valley. In general, people who turned in their >> lists on the same day lived close (It's always a gamble to use this >> assumption for a single year - I try to find 3 years), and William >> Daniel was listed on April 18,. There were only a few others on that >> date, so I can only guess that he lived in what is now the southern >> end of Warren County. He is also in the 1783 list, the earliest >> existing list . A deed in Shenandoah Co Deed Book C, p. 242 places >> him owning land in Leeds Manor, with a wife named Massie and perhaps >> having a Jane Farmer, daughter of Daniel Farmer also on that land. sstarks wrote: GOOSE CREEK MONTHLY MEETING Loudon County, Virginia Marriages: The-first marriage-in the meeting was that of Joel Lewis and Sarah Daniel, who appeared before the meeting and made their first declaration of intentions of marriage with each other o^ the 30th of 1st month 1786. In due time they accomplished their marriage in the "good order used amongst Friends" before the full meeting. Their marriage certificate was signed by many witnesses and given to the recorder for record. In extracting the data from the marriage certificates I have shortened the language very much, since it could not be possible to afford the space required to contain the full text of so many marriage certificates with long lists of witnesses, in a printed book of this kind, but all essential wording is contained in my extracts to show as clearly as possible the true identities of individuals, names of parents (when given in the certificate), birth and death dates, places of residence, etc. Here is the essential data of the above marriage certificate! of Joel Lewis to Sarah Daniel: 1786, 3, 9. Lewis, Joel, son of Jehu Lewis and Alice, his wife, of Loudon Go., Va.; m Sarah Daniel, daughter of William Daniel and Esther, his wife, of Loudon Co., Virginia, in a public meeting of Friends at Goose Creek Meeting house, Loudon Co., Virginia before 38 witnesses

1. Orndorff family
2. An 1844 Winchester, VA letter / court summons on ebay mentions an Orndorrf family: _http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5597952994_ (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5597952994) Since a lot of old court case for Frederick are on microfilm, at Handley and LVA, maybe this 'summons' would be a good clue for further research. I'm not in the Orndorff line, but my ancestor Jonathan Palmer, d. 1802 Loudoun co., VA had a daughter Martha who married an Orndorff. However, I was never able to figure out who her husband was. G.T. 2. I am looking for a town plat of early Shepherdstown. I understand that the original plat from 1762 did not survive but I thought maybe it had been redrawn by someone and I might get a copy of it. Does anyone know how to do so? I was curious as to who my ancestors neighbors were? June Byrne junebyr@aol.com or junebyr@yahoo.com Daytona Beach, FL

3. Cecil O'Dell's Pioneers of Old Frederick County mentions that Mordecai Mendenhall and wife Charity (Beeson) sold two tracts of land, one 200 acres and one 150 in Frederick Co., VA (a map shows the two tracts as somewhat northeast of Martinsburg, near Tuscarora Creek) to James Glen for 200 pounds on 20 May 1756 (the Mendenhalls had moved to Rowan Co., NC by then). The reference is Frederick Co., VA, deed book vol. 4, pp. 142, 145. That's the only Glen/Glenn mentioned; are you certain that your James had died by 1755? There are several Wrights, but none that seem to match your information. I would definitely check land records for Frederick Co. and Berkeley Co.--both the deed books and deed indices have been filmed by the (Mormon) Family History Library and can be ordered at any local Family History Center. Good luck! 3. I am looking for any information on the James GLENN who died in Frederick County, Virginia between 1753-1755. In his will, James states his wife Hannah was to receive half of all goods and chattels, and his son William was to receive half of the land. Should his wife and son die then his estate was to go to John WRIGHT'S first born. It appears the John WRIGHT mentioned in the will married Hannah GLENN before 1760 as John received a land grant in Frederick Co., VA near the Potomac River, and Hannah was said to be his wife. I also found mention of this John and Hannah in Chaulkey's Scotch-Irish Records wherein it states John and Hannah had no children together, but John gave a gift of land to Hannah's Glenn grandchildren. He lived in the area of Frederick County that branched off into Berkeley County. Who was this James GLENN and wife Hannah? Does anyone know what happened to John WRIGHT and Hannah after John received his land grant?

3. The president's proposed budget for 2006 eliminates the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the only grant-making body in the federal government with a focus on archives. The following is the exact wording from the proposed budget from page 1190 under the National Archives and Records Administration, Federal Funds, "National Historical Publications and Records Commission Grants - This program provides funding for grants that the Commission makes, nationwide, to preserve and publish records that document American history. The Budget proposes no new grants funding for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 2006".
