    1. Quaker families
    2. Carolyn Lacey
    3. I am finding this info about the Quaker families VERY interesting. I am trying to find the parents of James McGlaughlin born in 1795 in Berkeley, which as you know was formerly Frederick co., VA. Do you find any McGlaughlins in your records? One of the later McGlaughlins had the middle name of Brinton which I have heard had Quaker ties. Thanks. Carolyn __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? 1. Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] New Castle Co., DE migrations
    2. Hi Martha and List, first Iam trying to help as many as I can but I getting alot of requests and can only do one at a time. It takes me several hours per night just look for one name and chart it. I have 3 now one is Harrold/Herrell that Iam compiling and Mercer and Offley . Iam not the fastest typist and this is what slows me down on anwering each one . I have to review and then type in some kind of order for all of you to understand. Offley- they are Quakers listed in the Kent CO DE Quaker records and Deeds and they are listed with wills and deeds in New Castle CO PA . I found links for the Offleys to Nottingham, PA a Frederick CO VA migration county with names of Hilliard, England , Shaw and references to Alexander ROSS of Nottingham , PA and VA land partner of Morgan Bryan - Boone related. 3. I have been following a lot of the discussion on the Quaker families of Frederick Co. Va. with relish! Several of my families have been mentioned. Cartmell, Mendanhalls and others. Is there any mention of the Bruces of that county? Some of them were Quakers, the way I understand it. Vickie --- ---

    1. Frederick County Information, Dunn Family and Trivoli, IL
    2. I am intrigued by the recent information from Patricia Max and am hoping that she or someone else on this list may be able to help me at least partially break through a major brick wall for me. Also, the recent information about migration from Chester Co. PA to VA gives me hope as well, as my ancestor from there is tied into the mystery, so here goes... First, the Dunn family and Trivoli, IL: I have a Mary Jane Anderson (born 2/16/1833 in Hardy County, WVA), daughter of David Anderson (born 4/15/1797 in CharlesTown, Berkeley County, WVA) and Mary Magdalene Kackley (DOB unknown but from Cacapon, WVA). Mary Jane married Amos Dunn in Peoria County, IL on 10/5/1854. They had two children, Delmore Dunn (born 1855) and Theodosia Dunn (born 1858). Mary Jane and her two children all died in 1859 and are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Trivoli, Peoria County, IL. David Anderson and all his children moved to the Trivoli area around 1852-55 after Mary died in WVA. David was a cooper and at least one of his sons was as well. I have no information on Amos Dunn. Can you help, Patricia? Second, David Anderson was the son of John Anderson who lived in CharlesTown, WVA in the late 1790's and early 1800's. I have no documentation on who David's mother was but suspect it was either Elizabeth Culp or Sarah Duke, both who may have been from PA, but I could be wrong on both accounts. Since there were at least 2 if not 3 John Andersons in CharlesTown during the same time period, it all becomes very confusing. I just know that my John Anderson was not the one who married Deborah Swartz. At any rate, John is a major brick wall for me. However, one of his good friends was George North who was an ironmaster from the Coventryville Iron Works in Chester Co., PA, who moved to WVA to run the Keep Tryste Furnace in 1791. This furnace is located just above Harper's Ferry and near CharlesTown. Later George also had a mill and general store and I have a copy of a bill of sale that lists George North, miller, and John Anderson, cooper. I know that George Washington hired George North and a couple of other men from Chester Co. to buy land in the WVA area and I believe that's how the Harper's Ferry arsenal came into being. Since George and John were good friends I have wondered if John was from Chester County as well. I have seen a John Anderson on a Chester County census for 1790 but have not found any other information. The Norths were not Quakers and I don't know if the Andersons were, although both families ended up being Methodists several generations later. John Anderson's grandson, Robert Ferguson Anderson (son of David Anderson) married first Martha Henkle North, then Sarah Keyes North, both granddaughters of George North. Martha died of typhoid fever in the early 1860's and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Trivoli, IL. Can anyone on this list help with information about these folks? I have lots of North info but the Anderson line alludes me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Susan in Milwaukee

    1. Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Re: Mendenhall
    2. Hi List, The Mendenhalls of Chester CO PA are related to the Cope's. John & Charity Cope's son Caleb Cope marr. Mary Mendenhall 17.10.1760 and at this wedding are Mary's parents George Mendenhall who marr. Sarah Pim 2.9.1737 Bradford, PA MM. This George is a brother of James Mendenhall b) 26.11.1718 Caln, Chester CO PA marr. Martha Griffith31.11.1739 Bradford MM and 2nd marr. Hannah Thomas 9.10.1743 dau. of Richard Thomas & Grace Atherton and this Richard Thomas is a son of the large Welsh tract in PA Thomas Thomas. James Mendenhall & Hannah & son Phineas are at the wedding of Caleb Cope & Mary Mendenhall and Phineas Mendenhall marr. Tamer Kirk 15.7.1763 Bradford, PA The Bradford, PA MMs show this family going to New Garden, NC 14.3.1766 and James & Hannah Mendenhall going to New Garden, NC 16.4.1762 . John Mendenhall a brother of George and James marr. Elizabeth Coates 18.6.1743 and Bradford MM shows this family going to New Garden, NC 17.8.1764 . The 1768 Rowan CO NC tax list of William Spurgin and area that became Guildford, CO NC in 1771. On this tax list are James Mendenhall and son Elijah b) 15.12.1748/49 Chester CO PA son George b) 21.5.1751 Chester CO PA - these are actual Quaker records , and son Phineas Mendenhall b) 20.12.1741/2 is taxed alone on this tax list. James & Martha have son RICHARD b) 28.7.1744 went to Rowan CO NC with family. John Mendenhall and sons Moses b) 23.12.1744/45 and JOHN B) 26.11.1746/47 . Note: in 1770 or 1774 2 Mendenhall brothers were with Daniel Boone in VA and were killed by Indians there. Their names were John and Richard Mendenhall. So what we have here in 1768 Rowan/Guilford CO NC is that Caleb Cope's wife Mary Mendenhall has 2 uncles here on the 1768 Rowan CO NC tax list of William Spurgin . FYI- Mordecai Mendenhall his father is John of Earl, twp, Lancaster CO PA marr. Charity Beeson 3.21.1735 Leacock MM, Lancaster CO PA. Charity is a dau. of Richard Beeson & Chaity GRUBB marr. 1707 New Castle CO DE . John of Earl twp may be the John Mendenhall 1756-58 Frederick CO VA will abtract wife Sarah. I think I know who he is but not sure but could be an uncle of James and John of 1768 Rowan. James , George and John's paretns are Aaron Mendenhall marr. Rose Pierson 16.4.1715 Concord, PA MM.= Quaker Monthly Meeting. Mordecai & Charity Mendenhall are on the Frederick CO VA deeds 1743-1758 showing buying land there from Richard & Charity Beeson and selling land there while living in 1768 Rowan CO NC Tax list of Quaker community William Milliken. The Richard Beeson and Mordecai Mendenhall families are on this tax list . The are 17 Mendenhalls on the 1790 Guilford CO NC census and all are related to Caleb COPE'S wife Mary Mendenhall COPE. The same Quaker Mendenhalls and Beesons are on the 1787 Berkeley CO VA tax list. David

    1. McCann and Taggert Families
    2. Was wondering if you would have any information on the McCann/Taggert family that came to Berkley Co., Va. from Ireland in 1789. I have searched with no luck of even finding them in Virginia. There was Leanty and his wife Margaret, Catherine Taggert, Arthur McCann, and two Taggert boys. They were in Virginia until about 1800, and it is possible that Leanty and Margaret had a couple or three children while in Virginia. Margaret must have also died there is there is no mention of her coming to Kentucky. By the time they got to Pendleton County, Kentucky it was just Leanty, Catherine Taggert, and one of the Taggert boys. Leanty died in Pendleton County, Ky. in 1820. Catherine was supposed to have died in Pendleton County, Kentucky in 1825 at the age of 118. Have found no proof of that either. All of this information comes from an autobiography from a son of Leanty who was born in Bracken County, Ky. in 1800. Any help would be so appreciated. Thank you. Nancy Bray

    2. Patricia Max
    3. You'll find quite a bit of information on Amos Mendenhall if you go to http://www.mendenhall.org Select Data repository, then select The Mendenhall Data Set You will get a page with a search box. Enter the name you are searching for - in this case Amos Mendenhall and submit. Amos who married Jane Dunn is #20 on the list born abt 1748 PA. This is a very good site because it includes much source material. For example, it says that your Amos was actually married twice and in 1860 he was a furrier in Trivoli IL. However, there can be mistakes so you need to verify the data yourself. One way to verify much of the Quaker data, at least for birth, marriage, and death dates are to use the Hinshaw volumes that document the various meetings. Amos the father and his parents Samuel Mendenhall and Esther Williamson will probably be in one of those volumes, but Amos, the father was disowned for fighting and marrying out of unity by the Wilmington, DE Quakers in 1774. So it will be harder to verify the births of his children. My GGGgrandfather, and his son both named Amos Mendenhall were in Federick County. Amos is listed in the 1787 tax census, and his son Amos married a Jane Dunn in Old Frederick County, about 1815. I know very little about Amos Mendenhall and Betty Hayes. If, BIG IF, you can help me find out more about these two I would greatly appreciate it. I am reading the emails using public computers, so I don´t have all my informtion with me. I did not find much about Amos and Betty in the Cope books that I have seen. 3. Attention Marilyn A. Willer and to all on the list Over the weekend I tried again to see if anyone might know something about my ggggrandfather Philip Porter b. abt 1754 who m. Nancy Ann Brent b 1766 b in Frederick Co. I do not know if they married there or not. . Marilyn was so nice to advise the following: I have a Philip PORTER bn abt 1765 and d 15 Aug 1800 Hampshire Co. VA. He was killed in a hunting accident. He was survived by his wife and eight children. Philip was md. in Frederick Co. VA, 28 Feb. 1786, to Sarah LARGENT. I can only guess at this time as to the identity of his parents. Philip has some connection, possibly brother, to Elias PORTER who md. Margaret SLY in Frederick Co. VA, 28 Feb. 1876. I had forgot about the similar Philip Porter when I wrote to the list a few days ago. Yes I was sent that Philip Porter info some time ago who m. Sarah Largent some time ago. Sadly he is not the same man, and as far as I know no relation. He was b. abt 1765 and died 1800. MY PHILIP PORTER was b about 1754 (that is a pretty good date) and died 1831 in Spencer Co, KY.and we did definitely find that he m. Nancy Ann Brent dau of Captain Charles Innes Brent b 1735 Thank you Marilyn for sending the info on your Philip Porter, Does anyone on the list know anything about the house Winter Hill. It was built by Nancy Ann Brents brother also Charles Brent b. 1765 for his wife Rachel Moore. Thanks in advance to anyone that might know anything about the Brents, Anne Gunnell (Nancy Ann Brents mother) or any Porters. 2. In a message dated 2/6/2006 10:54:07 A.M. Central Standard Time, Chocybrown writes: As you probably know, but thought I would post it in case you don't: Jeremiah LANGLEY/Elizabeth WILSON; 22 Feb 1791 by the Rev. Christian Streit, Minister of the Lutheran Church at Winchester; however Streit traveled throughout the area where he preformed marriages and so forth. Another similar marriage: Jeremiah LANGLEY/Mary ANDERSON, 14 Jan, 1795. The Surety/Bondsmen on this marriage was Bazel LEEKE. Thanks for your response, Chocy. Yes, we have discovered both and it was confusing until we found a Bible record for Jeremiah and Elizabeth. The Bible record indicated the dates of birth for Jeremiah's children by Elizabeth as 1791-1806. Elizabeth Wilson Langley died in 1822 in Muhlenberg County. We have not found out who the second Jeremiah was but it was not the Jeremiah who married Elizabeth Wilson. Again, appreciate your help. Dorann

    3. I am interested in all these New Castle Co., DE connections! Was this a common migration path? I am researching a John Riley, who I was recently told came to Berkeley Co. from New Castle Co.--his (first) wife was Margaret Offaly, presumably married in New Castle Co. (the second was Martha Blade, whom he married in 1796, just a few years before he died in 1801). John's son William was born there around 1759 or 1760 (according to William's Rev. War pension file). I know they were in Berkeley Co. by 1773 (when John bought property there). I've found no evidence that they were Quakers. Though the guardian of John and Martha's son Alexander was Amos Mendenhall, and I believe HE was a Quaker. He was also suretor for Martha's remarriage a year after John's death to James Whitelock. I'd be grateful for any insights concerning these families in particular or the New Castle Co. > Berkeley Co. migration in general!
