    2. Hi List, a few more thoughts on surnames- Mercer cont- Solomon Mercer & Olive his wife parents of John Mercer who marr. Hephzibah Simcock has this ancestry taken from my Quaker records and in Gilbert Cope's bio of Thomas Mercer page 655 in 1881. Solomon Mercer b) 10.30.1736 is the son of Daniel Mercer & Rebecca Townsend her father John from Long Island . Daniel died age 92 in 1807 b) ca 1715 son of Thomas Mercer JR and Hannah Taylor who Gilbert COPE says he married in 1710. . NOW this - This Thomas Mercer has sister Elizabeth Mercer who marr. 1st Joseph Woodward and 2nd William Vestal 1716 . The Parents of Thomas and Elizabeth are Thomas Mercer & Mary ( I have seen Greenway for her but not sure ) . Answer here- All of the Vestals I have listed in PA,VA and NC are desc.s of Thomas Mercer & Mary so every Vestal that is Quaker related is a cousin to all of these MERCERS. All of the families that married into these families are desc.s of Thomas & Mary Mercer and this is only one family we can use out of hundreds. David - I hope you see what I see and get IT.

    2. Hi List, I knew this was going to happen so please help me control the requests comming in now. I have just a few hours a day to do look ups because I have a full time job with the Telephone Company here in CA. Two weeks ago I had to worked 19 hours of overtime in 4 days so no time then to do your research. When I link a surname in VA to a poss. Quaker connection I will have then put you into the REAL world of fun for family records. This is the EXACT WORLD for family histories and will unite us all in AMERICA as REAL COUSINS. The DNA testing will bring in more to our world for Iam a DNA QUAKER related Cope. I started with no DNA Matches near the begining of DNA testing about 4 years ago and now I have over 300 men matching my 12 marker DNA. Please tell all readers that I will let them know when I will want more surnames to look for because I have enough right now. Sincerely, David Crow Cope

    1. Mercer, Cope in PA and 1850 Ohio
    2. Hi List, this is for Pam - The World is getting smaller with Quaker records. I found a Job Messer 1790 Concord, twp , Delaware CO PA and as you all know Delaware CO was Chester CO PA 1789. Job Messer has 1 male at least 16, 4 males under 16 and 5 white females he is listed next to Joshua Cloud. Bradford PA MMs - John Mercer son of Solomon & Oliver ( Pyle ?? ) marr. Hephzibah Simcock 18.10.1798 Bradford, MM she dau. of Mathias Simcock & Ann of West Bradford. At this wedding are 60 people with Samuel Coope son of John & Charity, Margaret Coope, Abiah Cope son of Samuel Cope & Deborah Parke, & Abiah's wife Jane Morris , Daniel Mercer, Rachel Mercer, Gideon Wickersham, Stephen Harlan. John Mercer above is at the wedding of Edith COPE to Benjamin Bailey 27.4.1797 Bradford, PA MM. Benjamin Bailey's parents are Isacc Bailey and Hannah-note: look for a connection to the Joel Bailey family I sent out. Edith Cope is a dau. of Nathan Cope & Amy Bane and Nathan Cope is a son of John & Charity Cope. 1850 Fairfield, Columbiana CO Ohio page 102- Isreal Cope 67 PA wife Elizabeth Dixson 63 PA - there are 17 Quaker Cope desc.s on this county census. Isreal Cope is the son of John Cope & Mary Dixson marr. 1760 and this John Cope is a son of John & Charity Cope. Page 103- Simon Cope 50 PA & Rachel Pritchett 42 he is the son of John Cope & Ruth Dixson and this John is the son of John Cope & Mary Dickinson . John Cope here was married first to Grace Cloud marr. 2 June 1751 Old Swede Church a nonquaker marriage because she was pregnet at the time of marriage and the Bradford, PA records show this . John got dismissed but was granted back into the faith later. This is the Cope family I have a 36 of 37 Male COPE DNA match with. Daniel MERCER 84 PA wife Sarah 64 PA Daniel Mercer 67 PA & Elizabeth 45 PA . I found the Copes' above on a copy of this county in my local library and all of these Copes' are listed in the Gilbert Cope family history pub, 1861 . There are 116 Ohio Cope families listed in Gilbert Cope's family book 1861 and not to be confused with his 1881 book. FYI- many Chester, DE Quakers were married out of unity and are found in the Old Swede marriage book for DE because the Quakers would not give permission for them to marry or the wife was pregnet as Iam finding out now.. Frederick CO VA- will of Edward Mercer 8 Sept 1763- has wife Ann chd- Richard, Moses, Edward, Elizabeth Heath, Joseph , Hannah and add John - wit: Jesse PUGH, Thomas BABB and MERCER Babb- I believe this Thomas Babb marr. Will- John Mercer 10 Dec 1748 - brother Richard Mercer, brotherin-law William HEATH. wit: Thomas BABB , Samuel & Ruth Patton. will of Elizabeth Morris 4 Dec 1760 legatees' Ann MERCER wife of Edward Mercer, Hannah Mercer dau. of Edward Mercer, Friend John Gerst, Elias Gerst, Ellen Allen step-dau- of William Robinson, Robert Robinson son of William Robinson, Robert Allen step-son- of William Robinson, John Robinson son of William Robinson. Exrs: William ROBINSON, Josph Beeler. Wit: William & John Chinowith this family are Quakers , Caleb BOOTH. Deed- Frederick CO VA- 3 Sept 1747 Edward Teaque to Richard MERCER , Shenandoah River , part of 40,000 acres of Jost Hite from Isaac & John Van METRE. 3. Gerry, The names, Harrold and Harrod appear to have come to America as separate families. I would think that there have been times when some records have interchanged the two names but, as far as I can learn, Harrod and Harrold are still different lines. We need a DNA comparison between proven Harrold and Harrod participants.. James Harrod moved down the Ohio River from Pa and was the first to settle land in Ky., contrary to the belief by many that Daniel Boone was the first to settle in Ky. In Frederick and Augusta there were two Harrold, Harrill etc. lines, one from Pa and Md and another from Lancaster, Prince William and nearby counties of Va. Both of these family groups moved south and west very early. We are presently trying to identify three different Harrell, Harrold, Harrill lines who appear on New River by 1775. We know that two of the lines do not match the DNA samples from those who have proven back to the Harrells of Nansemond co., Va and Eastern NC. We hope to soon have results from the the Richard Harrold line of Pa. and the Gilbert Harroll, Harrill line of Fauquier and Bedford co., Va.... now we need a few other samples from those who have proven their line back to Richard Harrill of Augusta co. Va. 1740 to 1760.. We also need samples from the Rev. War vet, John Herrell etc. of Maryland and northern Va.. Because the Harrold, Harrill, Herrell etc. families quickly moved to newly opened frontiers of VA. and western NC, all of them became intermingled very quickly and are very difficult to separate... We need a Lot of Help!! G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.

    2. Hi Gerry, I bought several books at Fort Harrodsburg , KY on James Harrod and family . The books show James Harrod marr. Ann Coburn widow of James McDonald . I read the parents of James were John Harrod and Sarah Moore and the only Harrod I can find in VA is Ephriam HAROD 8 whites 1782 Hampshire CO VA tax list of Marquis Calmes and next door to Ephriam is Joel BUFFINGTON 8 in family son of William Buffington & Magdalena Ferree and William Buffington is with his parents Thomas Buffington & Ruth COPE on the 1715 Bradford, PA tax list. David PS it appears that Silas HARLAN ( may have been at Fort Harrodsburg ) listed from Berekely CO VA died 1782 Rev War in KY and had a KY county named for him is on the will Ann Harlan as son ,wife of George 18 Feb 1762-7 Apr 1762 Frederick CO VA and these Harlans are on Deeds there and are desc.s of either immigrant George Harlan or brother Michael Harlan of New Castle CO DE 1690s. George Harlan is the father of Ezekial Harlan who's 2nd wife is Ruth Buffington sister in-law of Ruth COPE Buffington and both women are at the marriage of John Cope & Charity jefferis 1721 Bradford, PA. 3. David, I wonder if the HARROLDS might also have been spelled Harrod/Herrod/Herod? There were a number of those that appear in Kentucky and Tennessee by late 1700s/early 1800s. Did you check for Harrods/etc.? Gerry

    3. I think militias were often only lists of various "companies" of all adult males in an area since all were required to participate by law, mostly to build roads and defensive forts against any Indian uprising. They were mostly defensive, and usually not involved in military campaigns, except in times of emergency. Gerry Parchman

    2. Hi Lee and List, I will start first with the Chester CO PA Quaker Harrolds- New Garden, PA MMs- Samuel Harrold & Levina have son Jonathan Harrold b) 3.13.1723 -note; I can not find this family in any of my Chester records. Richard Harrold & wife Mary ( Beale ) 1) Richard - he is not listed on the MMs but he is a son listed on will of John Beale 8.11.1726 - 17 Dec 1726 Nottingham, PA - dau. Evan Hiatt is a brother-in-law of Jonathan Harrold who marr. Catherine Hiatt and Iam sure the Harrold researchers know this. This Jon. Harrold is show in the Hopewell Quaker records as going to NC and his on the 1768 Rowan CO NC tax list. 5) Mary II ? b) 9.19.1718- NFI 6) Rachel b) 2.9.1721 marr. 2. Hi Lee, Iam still charting the Harrolds/Herrells and I think I will list this next. FYI- do you know who Jeremiah Harrelle is on the 1781 Montgomery CO VA Milita under Capt. Pierce with Thomas Smith. I think this Thomas Smith is the one listed next to Andrew COPE 1782 Montgomery CO VA tax list. Jeremiah Herel , Robert and George McCoy are on the 1785 Russell CO VA tax list and a Jeremiah Herrel and William Herrel are on the 1810 Russell CO VA tax list. A hugh number of these 1810 Russell CO VA families are on the 1820 Floyd and 1820 Clay CO KY census were my Copes' are listed. David

    3. David, I take it that you did not find anything pertaining to Hugh Harold, Harroll etc. in the Quaker records you have been doing lookups in, is that correct? Richard Harrill, Harrell etc. who gave land to his six sons in Augusta co., Va. was from Prince William co., Va. and apparently not connected to the Richard Harrold of Pa. I don't know which group Hugh Harroll belonged to. Hugh Harroll died in Frederick co., Va. in 1743. Thanks, G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.

    1. Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Research
    2. Hi Nancy and List, I have not noticed the Corder name in any of my Quaker records but I do know if you can get your hands on any of the Ohio Quaker records you will find your Mendenhall connection to Benjamin Mendenhall & John Mendenhall, George Strowd/STRODE , William Cloud on Gilbert Cope's 1693 Concord, Chester CO PA tax list. I was asked where do I get all of my info for immigrant Quakers and it comes from Gilbert Cope & Futhey's History of Chester CO PA & Bio-Sketches pub. in 1881. I bought this book from Higgison's book company for 125 dollars with the added index added to it. I am still finding names not listed in this book's index. Gilbert Cope has tax lists for Chester CO. PA listing some of the townships for 1693,1715,1722, 1724 , 1753 and 1774. This book is the bible for Quaker families in America. Gilbert Cope also did Bio-Sketches for many of the immigrant Quakers to Chester CO PA and I use these for connections. I use the Chester CO PA deed books 1681-1730 -1729-1753 , 1753-1758 and I need more because many of the early deed are not recorded until many years later and that why I need deed after 1758. I have will abstracts for Chester CO PA 1713-1748 and 1748-1766 and need later wills. I have some Quaker marriages for many townships and if a marriage is not listed in the home town of your Quaker ancestor then look at all of the others and you may find the missing son or dau. there. There are 2 Hopewell, Frederick CO VA marriages recorded in the Nottingham CO PA Quaker MMs . Here are some of the first residents of Frederick CO VA in 1734 and 1735- George Hollingsworth ( son of Abraham late Cecil CO MD and my add Abraham son of Thomas Hollingsworth of 1696/97 New Castle CO DE with Cope ) marr. Hannah MCKOY 19. Dec 1734 at the house of Isaac Parkins/PERKINS living on North side of the Opeckon, Colony of VA . Abraham Hollingsworth's will is 23 Sept 1748- Nov 1748 Frederick CO VA . Witnesses- 1) Josiah Ballinger who marr. Mary Wright 6.31.1727 Nottingham, PA MM she dau. of James Wright & Mary Bowater. Josiah Ballinger is in Prince George CO MD 1730 and had a wedding for Thomas Mills & Elizabeth Harrold 1730 at his house. Morgan Bryan & Martha STRODE Bryan were at this marriage. Josiah Ballinger from NJ has a 4 Nov 1748 Frederick CO VA will -father-in-law James Wright listed will 4 Oct 1751 Frederick CO VA with Martha MENDENHALL listed . Mary Bowater Wright his wife has a 8 May 1764 Frederick CO VA will and one of the exrs. is Jesse PUGH. back to the Witnesses- 1) Josiah Ballinger- Burlington CO NJ , 2) Jacob Worthington-note: new info - the Worthingtons here are from MD and appear to be related to the much later Burlington, NJ Worthingtons and to the Phila, CO PA 1734 Quaker Worthingtons, 3) Thomas BABB -wife Sarah Foulke marr. 1729 Old Swede church of New Castle CO DE dau. of Elizabeth COPE dau. of Oliver COPE, 4) Thomas Branson - internet says he marr. Note: Stephen Hollingsworth of Cecil CO MD sold land to Robert McCoy/MCkay about 1720 from Monmouth, NJ -see my letter to you all on this. The Mckay researchers think that Robert McKay/McCoy marr. Ann Browne dau. of James Brown who marr. 1. Mendenhalls marry Corder Cross Families
    2. Nancy Corder Halvorson
    3. Hi Listers The more I read the more excited I am getting. The Mendenhall research seems to be linking together several disconnected CORDER families. I am looking for records that could identify who Sarah (Brodnax) CORDER married by 1815. Finding this marriage may provide me with evidence that could begin to break down a huge brick wall--who are the parents of Reuben CORDER, b. 1818 in VA. My gr-grandfather Abram CORDER's military records state he signed up for the Civil War in Greenfield, OH and he was from Clinton Co. OH. His father was Reuben CORDER. A James CORDER m. Susanna Nordyke in Clinton Co. OH in 1835. Susanna's brother John witnessed a deed in Clinton Co. OH in the early 1800s for a Amos Cowgill and Edith (MENDENHALL) his wife of Frederick Co, VA.. John and Tacy Cowgill, children of Josiah Cowgill m. children of John and Hannah CORDER of Rappahannock Co. VA. A will probated in 1815 in Bucks Co, PA for Sarah (Wright) Brodnax names her son Robert Brodnax and daughters as Sarah CORDER and Amelia MENDENHALL. An earlier will probated in Bucks Co.in 1763 for Charles Wright mentions dau Sarah, wife of Wm Brodnax; their son Charles. The Brodnax family lived in and near Bristol, PA. as did members of the Wright, Cowgill and Nordyke families (and provably the Mendenhall families). Some were from Burlington, NJ. Adam Mendenhall and Ameliah (Brodnax) Mendenhall's children were cousins to the Edith Mendenhall who m. Amos Cowgill. A Charles Brodnax and a William Carter lived near the Brodnax family in 1790. A Thomas Corter joined the RW in 1780 in Frederick Town, MD. A Sarah Corder m. John Drish in Frederick Co. MD. in 1841. They can be found in the 1850 - 60 census for Frederick Co. VA.. She was born abt 1810 in VA. They are living with Wellinghams who also m. CORDERS in VA in the 1790s. A Henry Curdur was on the 1790 census for Bedford Co. PA. Charles Brodnax, probably the brother to Sarah Corder and Amelia Brodnax, was listed in the 1800 census for Bradford Co. PA. Henry CORDER was in Northumberland Co. PA in 1800. He and his wife were both 15-26 years old. In 1810, a Henry Corter was in Montgomery Co. PA and a Charles CORDER s (he and wife were 26-45) years old was in Lancaster Co. PA along with members of the CRISWELL family. A Charles H CORDER was in Lancaster, b. abt 1768 in PA, for the 1850 census. The oldest record I have found on the Criswells were in Chester Co. PA. They also appear to have been Quakers. Another James CORDER b. abt 1823 m. Elizabeth Criswell in 1845. This family moved among the children of Martin and Elizabeth (CORDER) Pence who became guardians for Reuben CORDER in Champaign Co. OH in 1830. Another James CORDER m. Rhoda Criswell in Shenandoah Co., OH in 1801. George and Elizabeth Criswell bought land in Clinton Co by 1811. Most of my current primary research is focused on connecting Reuben CORDER with the other CORDERs in and near Clinton Co. OH. Since I may be looking for a cross family connection, it might be very helpful to find out who m. Sarah CORDER of Bristol, PA.. Could those of you with Quaker records see if her marriage is listed in MM records for the places where I found Henry and Charles CORDER? Thanks, Nancy Corder Halvorson Santa Fe, NM

    2. Hi List, just some quick thought on Quakers- 1) Gilbert Cope shows that Col. George Washington closed the Quaker Yearly meeting house in Phila, PA in 1778 because he believed that the Quakers were Loyal to the King. Col. 1. Quakers and War
    2. Hi List, here is what Iam finding out about the Quakers and War which we all know they were Passivists when it came to War. On the Frederick CO VA milita lists and find most of the Quakers there were in the Militia and I find many of them later still listed in the Quaker MMs in Frederick CO VA. I also found out that the Cane Creek, Orange/Chatham CO VA Quakers where some the organizers of the Regulator movement 1768-1774 here in NC. The book Breaking Loose together by Marjoleine Kars 2002 shows this on page 153- These Quakers did not want to more pay taxes for Gov. Tryon's new Mansion . " more than 500 angry Regulators planned to march on Hillsborough and set fire to the town if their demans were not met . By August 11, more than 1,000 Regulators reputedly had gathered at Quaker SIMON DIXON'S mill near Cane Creek, some twenty miles from Hillsborough. The next day Edmond Fanning mustered up 250 men . Tension mounted. HERMAN HUSBAND later denied any violent intentions , but his account indicates that many of the rank and file ( Army/Militia ) were fed up. I know of one Quaker that was one of 4 men hanged at the end of this Regulator movement and he is JAMES PEW - name on a plate in a NC monument and I traced him back to the PA Quaker Pews. My Quaker records on Simon Dixon back to New Castle CO DE and the world get big on connections using these records. New Garden, PA MM record- Simon Dixon , father Thomas , marr. 11.8.1752 Elizabeth Allen , her father John . Quaker records show Simon is the son of Thomas Dixon- father William who marr. Thomas Dixon of William Dixon will 3.1.1708 Red Clay Creek listed in the Kennett, PA MMs. Thomas Dixon's brother George Dixon marr. Ann Chandler 29.10.1725 Centre MM, New Castle CO DE . Ann Chandler ( a neice of Jane Chandler mother of Charity Jefferis who marr. John COPE 30 Nov 1721 Bradford, PA. William Dixon and John Dixon brother of the above both married dau.s of Thomas Hollingsworth & Grace Cooke marr. 1692 Concord, PA MM with Nathaniel CARTMILL at this wedding. Simon Dixon listed in Kennett , PA MM as- Simon Dixon granted certificate to Carver's Creek, NC 6.3.1751, In the Cane Creek, NC MMs it shows this- Simon Dixon recieved from Newark, MM , Kennett, PA 6.2.1753. It took Simon Dixon just one day short of 2 years to get to NC from PA. Simon Dixon's grd-father Simon Hadley marr. 2nd 22.7.1752 Brdford, PA MM to Phebe Grubb Buffington -widow of Richard Buffington who's brother Thomas Buffington marr. Ruth COPE dau. of Oliver Cope. Joshua Hadley' s son Simon is on the 1775 and later Surry CO NC records. Phebe Grubb;s sister Charity Grubb marr. Richard Beeson ancestor of Edward Beeson I just listed with Pugh. OK, do you see now how I can take just about any Quaker family and link to the Quaker Copes' . Here's how it works the more we can link to the Frederick CO VA Quakers to non-known Quakers desc.s the bigger the list grows for adding our own families to these people. David

    2. Hi Carolyn and List, I copy all of your rquests but this is going take more time than I thought. 1. Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Re: Frederick County Information
    2. PS, I forgot mention that Burlington CO NJ has a migration pattern to Frederick CO VA 1730s and much later. The Worthingtons, Ballingers, Curtis , Bryan, Borden, and others I have to chart are found as immigrants back in NJ. I can tell you this and that is with these Quaker records it is almost a sure thing for finding your immigrant Quaker ancestors know as First Ones of our Presence Here . David

    1. Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Re: Frederick County Information
    2. Hi Hal and List, trying to answer all of your questions one by one here. I have books -deeds/wills/court that I do my research and and found this for Quaker Migration into Frederick CO VA. The Quakers' of New Castle CO DE , Burlington CO NJ and East & West Nottingham, Chester CO PA and parts of Cecil CO MD had families move to Frederick CO VA. The Early 1670-1680s Burlington Quakers and one oldest families are the Claytons that I sent out , have a hugh connection with East & West Nottingham, PA / Cecil CO MD 1722 Tax list by Gilbert Cope 1881. I get most of my research from this one book about 800 pages and as big as a family bible . The New Castle CO. DE Quakers are tied to the Kennett, Chester CO PA Quakers by 1715. The Kennett Quakers went to Cane Creek MM Orange CO NC 1755 and were large there by 1790. The Nottingham , New Garden, Chester CO PA Quakers and the Bradford, PA Quakers where the Copes' lived went to Rowan/Guildford CO NC with Quakers' in Surry, Stokes, Randolph CO. -1790 and they have hugh connection to the Cane Creek , Orange CO NC Quakers . Note: you can without a doubt reconstruct hundreds of families for the 1790 US Census for North Carolina counties on the above list using WILLIAM WADE HENSHAWS NC Quaker records . Note: has anyone seen the 1755 Orange CO NC tax list on the internet it was one of the first TAX LISTS listed on the internet about 1998. This Tax list has a William COPE and dog gone it I went and found many of the names listed on that tax list are CANE CREEK Quakers. There is a migration to Cane Creek NC from Kennett, Chester CO PA and Frederick CO VA - see W.W. Henshaw records for all 3 places. We also know that Frederick CO VA Quakers went to Rowan CO NC in droves in the 1760s. The Quakers who went to NC 1750s and 1760s lasted longer in this religion than the ones who moved from Frederick CO VA going towards KY . I announced about 2 years ago to the Cope mailing list that I found 4 1780s KY Forts with Quaker connections . They are Fort Boonesborough, Fort Strode, Fort Ruddell and Bryan''s Station , KY. I believe I will find more in 1780s and should prove that not only was Daniel Boone a birth Right Quaker in KY there were hundreds more of them and they were the first group having a common religion connection in KY.. David
