David, you have posted ANOTHER name of interest to me! MAXWELL James McGlaughlin named his first son, by his first wife, Ann FRANCIS---MAXWELL. I have never been able to figure out if that was a family name either! It's interesting to know that both MAXWELL and BRINTON were Quaker names. Maxwell McGlaughlin died when he was about 2 months old. I keep reading these postings with interest! Carolyn __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hi List, this is a family that I sent to the Cope-L mailing list a few weeks ago and what how I tie the Boone related and Cope related families from this one family listing . Morris Rees Will 18.11.1760- Nov 1768 Frederick CO VA - This is a Quaker from Nottingham, PA. Wife Sarah, chd- John, Morris, Jacob, David, Margaret, Mary, Hannah and Thomas. Wit: William Joliffe, Henry Reese and Richard Burkett. Here is what I found on this family and I bet a million dollars the Reese/Rees desc.s of this family do not know all of what Iam about to list. I found most of this in the Nottingham, PA MM records. Guess who comes into the picture well one of JOB family that I just listed. There all related in VA if Quakers . Morris Rees marr. Sarah Butterfield 14.1.1718 Nottingham, PA MM- chd- New Garden MM PA has these 2 births. 1) John b) 24.3.1720 2) Morris b) 1.9.1721 3) Jacob has wife Martha NFI 4) David son of Morris & Sarah marr. Martha Chandler 27.5.1756 Nottingham MM. Martha Chandler listed dau. of Jacob on marr. is dau. of Jacob Chandler who marr. Martha Greave 3.7.1730 Center MM, New Castle CO DE . This Jacob is son of Swithin Chandler & Ann ( some list Bowater ? ) . Swithin & Ann are at the John Cope to Charity Jefferis wedding 30 Nov 1721 Bradford, PA. Charity Cope's uncle & Aunt are Swithin & Ann Chandler grd-parents of Martha Chandler who marr. David Rees son of Morris. Charity Cope and Martha Rees are cousins as you can see here. 5) Mary marr. Job Hastings 21.9.1751 East Nottingham MM- this Job Hastings is son of John & Mary Hastings of Salisbury , Lancaster CO PA. 6) Margaret marr. Archibald JOB 30.7.1752 East Nottingham MM- Archibald Job is son of Thomas Job & Elizabeth Maxwell . This Thomas Job is the son of Andrew JOB that I just sent out. 7) Hannah NFI 8) Thomas - has wife Margaret This Morris Rees is the one I listed as buying land from Thomas Mills & Elizabeth Harrold . Thomas & Elizabeth Harrold Quaker 1730 Prince George CO MD marriage had a witnesses Morgan , Martha and Elinor BRYAN. Morgan Bryan is the grd-father of Rebecca Bryan wife of Daniel Boone. What we have here is that all of the descs. of David Morris & Martha Chandler are cousins of all of the Copes' that desc. from Charity Jefferis Cope. Note: in Gilbert Cope's 1861 History of the Cope family he had found over 3,000 desc.s of John & Charity Cope and listed in order using a number system 1-3000 for every desc. Gilbert Cope also copyrighted the Fan Family Charts you may see today. David
I continue to search for any information that I can find on my ancestral grandfather PHILIP PORTER B. ABT 1754 VA DIED 1831 SPENCER CO, KY Just to advise there was a PHILIP PORTER THAT M. SARAH LARGENT in Frederick Co, KY but he is not related as he died young. This is what I know about Philip Porter and his family. If anyone knows any thing about his father or siblings, I would be grateful as there is a record see below that in 1810 he was in Pughtown, Frederick Co, VA. ..1810 CENSUS: for Pughtown, Frederick Co., VA lists Porter, Philip View ImageOnline State: Virginia Year: 1810 County: Frederick Roll: M252_68 Township: Page: 344 Image: 658. Lists 1 male under 10, 1 10-15, 2 15-25, 1 over 45; 1female under 10, 1 over 45 (likely Nancy Brent.) One researcher believes there was a son, Joseph Sexton Porter, who probably died young, as there is no record of him, yet Nancy Brent's brother, Robert, does in a letter mention a Joseph" in the context of apparently grieving for him. Philip evidently left VA before 1820, as he is not listed in that 1820 census. ..1810:....In the 1810 VA Census, there was another Phillip Porter born?_________ as shown below: (name has 2 L's in Phillip) .1810: "A" Phillip Porter (that has 2 L's in name) Porter, listed in Hampshire Co., VA (6) {Hampshire County was formed from Augusta, Hardy and Frederick Counties, VA in 1753. Hi List, I checked my records and Greenbrier CO VA was Augusta CO VA in 1770 so the 2 Alexanders' should be the same man and Abraham Hite did the solving of it for me. This is how I do it the old Kevin Bacon of Hollywood book where everyone in movies there can be linked to Kevin Bacon. David
Hi List, I just found alot of families listed in my Greenbrier book called Indian Warefare and the Massacres by Dale Payne. Alexander Crawford and wife are listed killed 1764 and Valentine Crawford is listed as writing letter to Col. George Washington . Frederick CO VA deed- 6 Sept 1762 Valentine Crawford & Sarah to Jacob Townsend , land by Jacob HITE and Abraham Hite -listed on the McCoy will is with Col. William Crawford miltia from Frederick CO VA in Greenbier CO VA. On this deed is Col. Adam Stephen and is listed as having the Berekely CO VA Militia in Greenbrier CO VA Indian Wars. Note: Iam trying to prove these Crawfords are from New Castle CO DE and this won't be easy. The Greenbrier book has a Cope related family of Indian Spy Philip Hammon & Chrstina Cook who''s dau. Mary married James P. Cope 1806 Montgomery CO KY. Thank you for the reminder of Greenbrier CO VA a place Iam tracting back to Quakers. PS- a Jon. Buffington and family were killed by Indians in Greenbrier CO VA about the same time as Crawford and I believe this Buffingtons are the 1782 Hamsphre CO VA William Buffington & Magdalena Feree family. There is a KY Crawford family that married into my Cope family out of Estill CO KY 1820s. PS- Iam also a Floyd CO KY MCCOY desc. and that is why I took off like a rocket after them . The Floyd CO KY McCoys are the ancestors of the feuding McCoys' out of Pike CO KY and VA. David
I, too, am interested in Michael Casler who died in 1810 in Hampshire County. Three of his grandchildren, through his son John S. Kesler, married Kerns in Hampshire/Morgan Counties. I have a copy of John's 1854 will (Morgan County) and a rough family group sheet with his children and their spouses named from both of John's marriages. Evidently, you descend from one of John's eight sons. Perhaps we should communicate privately. My email address is wkerns4@comcast.net Wilmer L. Hi Carolyn, You all are going to see a great interest in the Quakers in Frederick CO VA soon and a good place to start is some one here take on the task of printing William Wade Hinshaws Hopewell VA Quaker records in his VA Quaker book pages 357-462 . William Wade Hinshaws listed some of the first Quakers in Frederick CO VA starting in 1734 including Thomas Babb, Alexander Ross ,Morgan Bryan Isaac Perkins, Abraham Hollingsworth, HUGH PARRELL , Richard BEESON and more.. William Wade Hinshaw says the Hopewell Quakers records for 1735 to 1759 were lost in a fire at the house of Quaker Clerk William Jolliffe JR. I now see why know one has discovered how big this meeting was in those missing years and why the Quaker research hit a road block here. When I get a chance I will look for McGlaughlin and I did see Daniel McGloughlan SR and JR on the 1782 Hampshire CO VA tax list of Michael Cresap. Brinton Bio- By Gilbert Cope 1881 pages 486-487- I will give some of this info just have no time to list it all because Iam a slow typist. William Brinton from Nether, Gowrnal, England came to Dudley meeting in Phila, 1684 died in Chester CO PA 1700 , wife Ann Begley dau. of Edward , this family moved to Birmingham, Chester CO PA were I find him listed 1693 with son William JR Birmingham, PA tax list pg 33 of Gilbert Cope's book 1881. Children- 1) William marr. Jane Thatcher 10.9.1690 dau. of Richard & Jane Thatcher who are on the 1693 Birmingham, PA tax list as well. This William Brinton is on the 1715 Thornbury, PA tax list with now old Friend Thomas MERCER listed as Masser. Note: this family has the next generation listed in the bios. 2) Elizabeth marr. Hugh Harris aka HARRY 2.12.1686 and he died by 1708 . I found Hugh and Daniel Harris on the ship " Vine " that came to Phila, 17.7.1684 per- Gilbert Cope 1881 bk page 22. These 2 men are listed from Macchinleth, Montgomeryshire, Wales. I have read that the Quaker minister Hugh Roberts has dozens of cousins who came on the ship Vine but he is not listed by Cope. Hugh Robert son Aubrey Roberts is on a 1730 Uwchlan , Chester CO PA deed as witness for George WILLCOCKSON to Philip Yarnall . Some of the Boone related Willcocksons' believe he is the immigrant ancestor for this family and some of these Willcocksons I call hour glass families are with my Cope family in Copeville, Collin CO TX 1880. Philip Yarnall and John Cope are on several Quaker weddings together 1730 Chester CO PA and Phillip Yarnall is an ancestor of Anna Garrett Cope wife of Gilbert Cope 1840-1928 in the Genealogy Hall of Fame in Arlington, VA. 3) Esther Brinton marr. John Willis - per Cope, and this couple sold land to John Cope in 1712 and are at the weding of John Cope to Charity Jefferis 30 Nov 1721 widow of a John Evans. John Willis is on the 1693 Thornbury, Chester CO PA tax and the 1715 tax with Thomas Mercer and William Brinton JR. 4) Ann marr. John Bennett 4.18.1684 Staffordshire meeting . Note: on the Bennett bio pgs 480-481 I find John Bennet's brother Edward Bennett marr. Margery Willis 1687 but Gilbert Cope does not say who she is. This is the immigrant Brinton family I have so far and I know that if I spent several days on this family I could add alot more . I might as well add this for Willis and you will see how this gets convoluted as they say. John Willis ( wife Esther Brinton ) has a 28 Mar 1745 Thornbury , Chester CO PA will and here are the children. 1) Benjamin NFI 2) Henry - wife unk. may have desc.s in Pittsylvania CO VA 1760s . 3) Mary marr. John Wall 4) Ann marr. 7.13.1722 Birmingham MM to Joseph Webb son of Richard & Elizabeth Webb - his bio page 760 1881 Cope book. 5) John will 28 Apr 1728 wife Mary - may be Mary Webb widow of George Brown. 6) Esther Willis marr. Stephen FOULKE son of Elizabeth Cope dau. of Oliver Cope. Stephen Foulk's sister Sarah marr. Thomas BABB 1729 Old Swede Church and this couple are in Frederick CO VA by 1734. 7) Edward has a 1732 will wife Katherine . 8) Sarah marr. Thomas Ward Wit; to John Willis SR will are Samuel Bettle wife is Ann Brinton dau. of William Brinton & Jane Thatcher and Joseph Brinton JR who marr. Mary Pierce 10.16.1711 Concord PA MM dau. of George Pierce & Ann Gainer, Joseph Brinton marr. 2nd Mary Elgar 2.14.1748 . This Joseph Brinton is the son of William & Jane Thatcher Brinton. children- 1) Joseph b) 11.30.1692 and you have his wifes. 2) William b) 6.25.1694 marr. Hannah Bullar 2.26.1716, marr. 2nd Azuba Townsend 5.9.1724 and marr. 3rd- Cecily Chamberland 5.1734- I do not have the meeting houses for these marriages. 3) Edward b) 12.12.1704 marr. Hannah Pierce 4.17.1724 dau. of George & Ann Gainer Pierce. 5) Mary b) 2.1.1708 marr. Daniel Corbet 9.8.1739 6) Ann b) 2.19.1710- marr. Samuel Bettle 2.29.1731- on will of John Willis 7) John b) 5.4.1715 marr. Elizabeth Vernon 2.21.1736- Note: believe Elizabeth Vernon here is related to Elizabeth Vernon wife of Andrew JOB died 1722 and she is on the 1722 East Nottingham, PA tax list. The JOBs' marr. into the Quaker McCoys of VA and these same Jobs are listed in Augusta CO VA 1740s and 1750s . Joshua Job son of Andrew has 2 sons Enoch and Moses on the 1785 Shenandoah CO VA tax list. Andrew Job is a witness for deed from Oliver COPE to Robert PYLE 1695 Birmingham, Chester CO PA . It is starting to look like the Copes' can be inserted with just about any Chester CO PA Quaker family and time will tell. David
David, are there any Johnsons or Johnstons? Thank you, Jo Anne Martin
David, I am enjoying all these records you are posting. I am saving them all! If I do find I have Quaker relatives I will want to read them all again. This is a lot of work you are doing! I hope you find my McGlaughlins in the Quaker records. I had heard that BRINTON was a Quaker name, so I keep wondering why James McGlaughlin's grandson was named James Brinton McGlaughlin! I am hoping it was his mother's name! We really appreciate all you are doing! Carolyn __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hi List, just to add related families to Milburn in Frederick CO VA Quaker records- Patience Milburn marr. Charles Perkins - 2.4.1748 Hopewell MM VA - Charles & Patience Perkins are witnesses to the will of John Milburn 14 Aug 1761 Frederick CO VA. Perkins - this Charles Perkins is the son of Capt. Isaac Perkins & Mary his wife. This Isaac Perkins is the son of Ebenezer Perkins listed on the 1696/97 Brandywine Hundred, New Castle CO DE. This Tax list has the Cope, Babb, Perkins , Cartmill, Hollingsworth, Grubb related to Beeson there 1707 all surnames having descs. in Frederick CO VA . Charles & Patience Perkins are listed in Hopewell Quaker records as -Certificate to Watere, SC - Note: this meeting new to men and need from one of you just where this is. date 10.7.1765. Hannah Milburn by Frederick CO VA deed shows husband William Gilliam and will of father . So what I did when I saw this name of William Gilliam on the 1790 Newberry CO SC census( where Messer BABB is and Frederick CO VA deed shows him in SC Messer there before this US census) and went to Gilliam where I typed Quaker and got 2 hits and I was off and running after that. William Gilliam on my Quaker hit died in Newberry CO SC 1789. The other dau. of John & Elizabeth Milburn/Millborn is a Elizabeth Parker and if research done on this surname we should know who she is unless of course we get it from one of our Quaker hit researchers who has done all of the work on this family. David
Hi Gwen and list, add this - I believe that the Andrew and William Millburn listed 1782-84 Hampshire CO VA tax lists may be the sons Andrew and William on the 1761 Frederick CO VA will of John Milburn. Note: Here is how to help yourself and me when researching a surname on the forums- go to the SEARCH box on any surname and type QUAKER and if you find hits go after them like a hungry hunter and get family info on them for me to work on . David
The Milborns/Milburns of Frederick CO VA I have and just lost 1 hour of work on them in my computer and Iam ticked at my self for this blunder. I sent alot of the Milburn family to the Gilliam researchers related to this Quaker from from NJ . I can tell you this and that is John Milburn Elizabeth Chapman 3.10.1724 Chesterfield Mm, Burlington CO NJ and he has a 14 Aug 1761 Frederick CO VA will with children listed and this family is related to the Quaker Perkins who are rleated to the Babbs. Frederick CO VA deed- 20 Sept 1743 - John Frost- he is on the Milburn will, to John Milburn of WEST NEW JERSEY land by Quaker John Littler -he married Mary Ross dau. of Quaker Alexander Ross who is VA land partner of Morgan Bryan grd-father of Rebecca Bryan BOONE -, 380 acres ,land by Hugh Parrell, save for 200 acres for Peter Falkner. Wit: Alexander ROSS, John Littler, Thomas Willson, William Jollliffe. Note: I know that Milburn, Ross, Littler, Jolliffe are Quakers and believe Falkner is one but do not know about Hugh PARRELL yet. Would like any information regarding a Michael and John CASLER OR CASTLER, KESSLER. Michael acquire a land grant from a Lord Fairfax agent in 1765 on Sir John's Run in an area near what is now Berkeley Springs, WVA. Michael died in Hampshire County, VA in 1810. Is anyone know of or doing the MILBOURNE or MILBURN ancestry that came from Frederick Co., VA.? I am seeking someone that perhaps could help me with that ancestry line. I have some that is dated clear back to the 1700's. Gwen
I was wondering if someone could help me out with the MILBOURNE or MILBURN ancestry that came from Frederick Co., VA.? Quite a few of them were born and raised there especially Luke MILBURN (MiILBOURNE). Gwen
David-- Thanks so much! Excuse my late response--I've had a difficult week....This information is very interesting. I'm eager to see where Margaret Offley Riley ties in--clearly there are a few possibilities!
