    1. Re: Newman surname
    2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. Nancy, George Newman (d. 1804) bought land in South Branch Valley in 1788. The deed stated that he was from Prince William County. You gave names of 10 children. Not all Newman researchers agree with the list. Christopher (1769-1845) married Sarah Ross and moved to Adams County, Ohio. Samuel (1771-1848) also went to Ohio about 1804. John, a Revolutionary War vet, stayed in Hampshire County and was buried in the Stump cemetery at Little Cacapon. John's wife was Elizabeth (Stump) Moore, a widow. He was born circa 1753 and died on July 26, 1826. I believe there was an Isaac Newman in George's family, because he is in the early Baptist Church Records (pre-1800s), and he owned a lot next to George Newman. You might want to do some further research in my book titled, Historical Records of Old Frederick and Hampshire Counties, VA, (Heritage Books, Inc., Bowie, MD) which I believe is in most of the genealogical libraries. The Newmans appear to have been associated with the Primitive Baptist Church of that era. The historical records book provides information on the Crooked Run and Little Cacapon Primitive Baptist Churches, commencing in 1790 and 1810, respectively. The book gives also the name and address of Newman researchers. Let me know if you're not able to connect with the information given. Wilmer L. 3. Hello! I'm looking for descendants of Jonah Lupton Rees and his wife Annie Jackson. They had three children, Annie Jackson Rees, Mary Alice Rees who m. James O. Steer and Samuel David Rees. I believe Samuel David died sometime in the 1870s-80s. After moving West and spending some time in Ohio, the family (at least Mom, Dad and Annie) returned to Winchester and the Hopewell MM. There, in the 1930s, Annie J.R. helped edit the *Hopewell Friends History*, but we believe she never married and had no children. Does anyone know what became of Mary Alice Rees Steer... or of S.D. Rees. I am descended from their father's sister Jane Sidwell Rees. Thank you, Jen Godwin ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J E N N I F E R G O D W I N P.O. 3. I have no info for you, and a "far-fetch" for me, but I just can't leave any stone unturned. My 3 gr-grfather was John NEWMAN Bragg, son of Joseph and Triphena Bragg, married 1808 in Fauquier Co VA. Speculation is that Joseph's mother was a Newman. I can determine Joseph's Bragg grandparents, but not his parents. By some SLIM chance, do you have any Bragg's married into the Newman family?? Thee was a George Bragg in Loudoun County in late 1700's. Any connection?? Good luck on your search!! Stewart is a difficult family to do. My ancestor is Daniel Stewart d 1774 who married Comfort (?). His daughter Elizabeth married John Slaven and they lived in Highland and Bath COs in VA. 2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. Valentine, I know of no published genealogy on Governor James Wood's (1741-1813) family. Gov. Wood married Jean Moncure and they left no descendants. The father of the Governor (and Revolutionary War General) was Col. James Wood the founder of Winchester and first Clerk of Court for Frederick County. Some genealogical information on the Wood family was published in 1926 by Katherine Glass Greene in her book "Winchester, Virginia and its Beginnings, 1743-1814," on pages 362-382. She cites Col. Wood's "Journal" as the source, which is believed to have been the same book that may be called Col. James Wood's Fee Book. Also, Mrs. Greene published the "Fees Belonging to James Wood, ANNO. DOM. 1744," which is a list of some of the first settlers in Old Frederick County. She published Fee schedules for three other years--Chapter XXVII, a total of 14 pages. You mentioned the Robert White family. You might be interested in knowing that a section on the White family is presented in my book, Frederick County, Virginia: Settlement and Some First Families of Back Creek Valley, 1730-1830. It seems that a large number of families from the area for Frederick / Berkeley counties area migrated to Bourbon County, KY about 1790-93.
