Friends on the Old Frederick County subscription list: Following up on a topic that I introduced several weeks ago, but could not bring closure at that time, I am posting a list of the first settlers in Old Frederick County. These were identified from a Fee Book maintained by the first clerk of court, Col. James Wood (died in 1759). The list of settlers is given below along with the fees assessed in pounds of tobacco, the medium of exchange. The date of assessment was 1744, which was one year after the courthouse in Winchester was established. One version of the Fee Book was published in 1926 by Katherine Glass Greene in her book, Winchester, Virginia and its Beginnings, 1743-1814. An expanded version of fee-paying settlers named in 1744 is found in Handley Library, Archives Division, in Winchester. Both versions are the handwriting of Wood, but the different lists were apparently made at different times during the year. I have taken the liberty to combine the two lists for 1744. I do not believe the compilation below provides a complete account of the first families of Old Frederick County. Evidently there were numerous settlers who had recently arrived, and had not come to the attention of the clerk of court. For example, some settlers in Cacapon, South Branch and Patterson Creek Valleys who should be on the list are: James Caudy, George Parks, John Parks, Richard Arnold, Evan Pugh, Robert Denton, Benjamin Phipps, Michael Stump, Benjamin Foreman, Job Piersall, Noah Hampton, the Van Meters, the Blues, Parkers, Deckers, Enochs, Friends, McBrides, Yorks, Hietts, Johnsons, George Horner, Benjamin Pritchard, and others. In fact, it appears to me that many of the Old Hampshire County settlers (including Hardy Co.) are not listed. This suggests one segment of the list below is still missing. Regardless of what is missing, the list is valuable for what it provides. If anything turns up, I will bring it to your attention. There are two John Richardsons named below. One was called "Red" and the other "Black." Can anyone explain this? On a related topic, Catherine Glass Greene names additional marriage license fees collected by. Col. Wood to Governor Gooch: Leonard Helms in March 1744 (name of bride not given) William Mitchell in April 1744 (name of bride not given) I'm now able to answer questions that may arise from this posting. Tell me more about your Reed, Reid ancestors. Where? When? I have Hannah Reed, daughter of James Reed and Jane ? in Highland County OH ca 1800. Margaret Ellis-Miller
A number of people have asked about the availability of a historical map of Frederick County (Where is Red Bud Run? e.g.). The Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society has a detailed map that displays the historical names of roads (including the tolls), cemeteries, mills, old postoffices, streams, churches, one-room schools, etc., while imposing them on current roads so that researchers can easily locate or visit the sites. The map is a one-of-its-kind. The map is illustrated, drawn in four colors, and is 26 x 45 inches. It was surveyed and drawn by Eugene Scheel in 1974. The cost is only $6, which includes shipping. Checks should be payable to the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society. Address your order to: Rebecca A. Ebert, Handley Archives, Box 58, Winchester, VA 22604. I highly recommend the map to anyone doing research in present-day Frederick County. Wilmer L. Kerns Volunteer in the Handley Archives

There was a guy that had a list of who was buried in certain cemeteries in Mineral and Hampshire Counties. Don't know if he has Hardy Co. You may contact him at RMcavoy414@aol.com. He has been very helpful to me. Hi Joe, I too have Stumps in Ohio, however mine are from Laurel Township in Hocking County which I know is not far from Circleville. Their first names were John, Samuel and Phillip. I am descended from Samuel who may be the son of John. Phillip may have been a brother of Samuel and he moved to northern Ohio at an early date. Oh what fond memories I have of the Circleville Pumpkin Show. My grandfather, who had a farm just outside Grove City, used to take my sister and me every year. By the way, we were born in Lancaster in Fairfield County. charla in nj Charla Marchione marchpubs@juno.com On Fri, 18 Jul 97 19:24:53 UT "Joseph McNemar" <Pumpkin_head@msn.com> writes: >I am new to this list and wanted to tell you a little about my >interest in Old >Frederick Co., VA. This is my first time sending a message to a mailing list, so...hello everyone. I am researching a THOMAS EMERSON who lived in Frederick Co. or Washington CO. MD when he enlisted in the Revolution. He was married to MARY DOWNEY in Washington Co. 12 Nov. 1799. Would like to find information on parents for both. Or siblings. Thomas Emerson later lived in Hampshire Co. WV and then to Pickaway Co. OH. He died there in 1826. Other familes associated with Thomas Emerson in Hampshire Co. were SHEETZ and PARKER. I look forward to hearing from anyone regarding these families. Adina Dyer
According to the Book - The Shenandoah by Julia Davis copy write in 1945 - (Borrowed from Library for VA History Research) Harpers Ferry is/was 1. "The meeting place of three states, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. 2. In 1858 an important link connecting the Valley and the West by rail and water to the world of cities and commerce. 3. The place were the famous "John Brown" seized the town, in his efforts to free all black slaves. He was caught, tried and hanged for treason. I don't know if these are particularly "romantic" reasons, but Harpers Ferry has much history. Carolgene ---------- From: Paul D. Hangsleben Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 1997 11:25 AM To: OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Marriage on the bridge/Jefferson Co.(W)VA I recently purchased a cd containing information on Jefferson Co., (W)VA genealogy. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the marriage, in 1858, of a Frederick Co., VA couple. The marriage announcement appeared in an Apr, 1858 issue of the Va Free Press ( out of Charles Town, (W)VA). It noted that Adam WINDLE and Hannah D. NELSON were wed by a Rev. John S. DEAL(E), on the bridge, at Harpers Ferry. Question: Was this something "romantic" to travel to be married "on the bridge"? The news item stated that the couple was from Frederick Co.. Has anyone else had relatives who were married "on the bridge". Maybe a more involved announcement would tell of the tradition? Thanks for your comments. Karen Nelson Hangsleben
Visit The Underground Railroad site at Marshall Key's Tavern, Old Washington, Mason, KY - Saturday Sept. 20th from 9am to 10:15am. Harriet Beecher Stowe, while visiting one of her pupils at the Col. Marshal Key Home, witnessed a slave auction in front of the courthouse, and her novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" reflected that experience. James A. Paxton, owner of the Paxton Inn, helped the Underground Railroad by hiding runaway slaves under a stairway until they could continue their escape northward.
