I am originally from Murfreesboro, TN (Rutherford Co.) I noticed the name Elam McCracken. I do not know any McCrackens but the Elam family have been in Murfreesboro for a very long time. Most of the old families came from NC or VA. Joanne
Hello Everyone........ I am new to the group and in need of help. Is anyone researching the Stephenson surname, or does anyone have information on early Stephensons in the area of Frederick County? Any information, no matter how small, will be appreciated very much. Thanks, David Stephenson Winston-Salem, NC Email: BJFlounder@AOL.com
The Edward Williams on this list appears to be my ancestor (mainly because this is the only Edward Williams I've ever seen in the right area at the right time). Does any one know if he's related to the Rev. William Williams also on this list? charla in nj Charla Marchione marchpubs@juno.com
Thanks to all that answered my query as to the McCrackens going to Tennessee. I am looking for a Joseph R. McCracken and Elam McCracken , and possibly a sister of Rutherford County, Tennessee and Marion County, Ark. Thanks again to all that helped. Lee Ralph
Dear Linda, At 08:34 AM 8/4/97 -0400, you wrote: >Wilmer, > >Thank you for bringing us this wonderful information! > >I do have a question... I was wondering if the source documents are listed alphabetically, or perhaps census style? In other words, is it possible to glean groups of ppl who were neighbors living in a specific part of old Frederick? The source documents are alphabetical for the 26 letters, but not alphabetically arranged within each letter. In other words, all names commencing with P are listed under P, but not all of the P-names are in alphabetized order within P. Regarding the order of names, I would not trust the sequence of names to infer that certain people lived in one area or another. I think there is a general pattern, but it is too vague and complex to venture an explanation in a short post. >I wonder too, did the clerk travel to each household? Or did commissioners, assigned by the court, visit each person responsible for the fees in question? Or did the ppl present themselves to the clerk? Is it possible to answer these questions (to any degree) from viewing the source document? It is my opinion that residents or their representatives came to the courthouse for services, such as requests for surveys, recording land grants, etc. I believe that the Justices of the Peace assisted the Clerk, by developing a list of the residents who lived in a certain political jurisdiction. For example, part of Old Hampshire County residents are missing from the lists. Either Solomon Hedges or Samuel Earle (Justices assigned to that area) failed to send in a list, or more than likely the list was not integrated into Wood's Fee Book. The sheriff was assigned the responsibility for collecting the fees. >Thanks again Dr. Kerns, you've done this list a GREAT service!!!! Hi Wilmer, Thank you, thank you. Looking for info. on Elizabeth MESMER/MESSER who married John HODGSON. John was b. 4 Aug 1804 and d. 14 Feb 1884 at Winchester. Was Elizabeth connected to family of Jacob MESMER, War of 1812 veteran? Jacob's widow, Ann SMITH MESMER applied for his pension. Jacob's sons were John, Jacob and Peter. John was the "one-armed Confederate Chief of Police for years". An unpublished marriage record in Frederick County has been found in the Handley Library, Archives Division, Winchester, VA in "The Papers of Col. James Wood," 173-WFCHS, Box 1. The surname KINKEAD is found throughout the Valley, especially in Rockingham County. I hope these two are someone's ancestors. Here is the record: Whereas there is a marriage suddenly intended to be solemnized between William KINKEAD and Agatha CHINN, I do hereby certify that due caution is taken in my Office for a license to Issue for the said marriage. Certified under my hand the 7th day of February 1777. James A. Keith, Clerk of Court. To James Wood (Jr.) Gent.
