    2. Bob Thomas
    3. Dear Old Frederick Folk: A thousand pardons for sending this to the whole group but I don't know what wlse to do. I'm going to be away from my computer for a while and I need to un-subscribe to this mailing list. All of the material that I printed out when I joined the list over a year ago must now be obsolete for I've tried two addresses to cancel but the e-mail always comes back undeliverable. Someone's help would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holiday! Bob Thomas Bob Thomas bwthomas@mindspring.com Postal Box 12486 Atlanta, Georgia 30355 "The patient toad gets tired of dodging the harrow."

    3. Hello, You asked about the South Branch Manor. There is an excellent map that shows the location of the South Brance Manor. The map comes free with a book entitled, PIONEERS OF OLD FREDERICK COUNTY by Cecil O'Dell. You can order a copy by contacting the author. His address is Cecil O'Dell 464 Morse Liberty, MO 64068 He will tell you the exact cost--I think it is about $40.00. The book has 623 pages and an index.

    3. Hi, I know very little of geography of V/WV but I do know that my ancestors settled on the South Branch of the Potomac. They were in a area between Petersburg and Mt. Storm. They were well established in that area and there are still many there. I show a Peggy Sue Ratliff, born June 18, 1934 married to a Richard James Cosner. I don't know when they married but maybe they are still there. I know this isn't much help but sometimes all that's required is a crumb. Let me know if you find any thing. 3. Rio, is on Route 29 south of Augusta on the Hampshire County side of the Hampshire/Hardy County line. Dont' know about High Knob. Glad to hear about Mikes Run. Don't remember hearing about it, but I am not familiar with Antioch. My dad taught school a couple of years in Antioch before my time. It runs on the south side of Knobley Mountain and eastward. It is just south of Antioch, WV. I would highly recommend getting a WV highway map for Mineral County from: WV Division of Highways 1900 Kanawha Blvd. East, Bldg 5 Charleston, WV 25305-0430 304-558-2868 The maps are only a couple of bucks and well worth it! They show most of the runs, highways, cemeteries, etc. Call them for an exact price for each county. Hope this helps. Good luck Karen

    2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. To Tom Davis: A Samuel Sample (1780-1854) lived in present-day western Frederick County, and briefly in Hampshire County, WV. His wife was Nancy Ridenour. One of their daughters, Elizabeth Sample (1811-1890), married Abner Dunlap and moved to Preble County, Ohio. There may have been an older Samuel Sample, possibly the father of Samuel who married Nancy Rittenour. From memory, there was an earlier connection between the Samples and the Quakers. When Alexander Campbell held revivals in the area during the 1820s and 1830s, several of the Samples were supporters of the movement. Wilmer L. 1. 18th Century Sample Family
    2. Thomas W Davis
    3. Hello all: I am trying to identify a family for my great great grandfather, William Sample. His tombstone states he was born 19 March 1789, Loudoun County, Virginia. Research of Loudoun records reveals that a James and Sarah Sample were in the county during the right time frame. Sarah's mother was a Leesburg resident. Although James and Sarah bought a town lot in 1787, they sold it the following year. Sarah apparently died between 1791 and 1794. There is no other available evidence of the Sample residence in the county, neither marriage record, other land conveyance, will, etc. Therefore, I'm beginning to consider possible residence in Frederick Co., which at that time was the adjacent county to the west. During the time frame described above, there was a Sample family in Frederick County. According to Yates Publishing's family group sheet, (referencing DAR Application 314720; DAR History Book no. 141710' amd War Department Pension Records) James Sample was born 1750 at Frederick Co., Virginia, married Sarah Jane 1771 at Frederick Co., and died 1799 at Washington Co. Tennessee. The same family group sheet describes the wife as Sarah Jane, born 1753 in Virginia, died 1830 Washington Co., Tennessee. (The Loudoun Co. Sarah Sample died in the early 1790's) Children were listed as James, b. 1772, Martha, b. 1775, John, Nathaniel, and Sarah, with a note that there may be other children. Does anyone have information relating to James and Sarah of Loudoun Co., or James and Sarah of Frederick Co. I am told "Pioneer Families of Old Frederick County, Va." lists a Samuel Sample as recipient of a Fairfax grant for 400 plus acres in Frederick during the 1750', perhaps James' father or uncle. 2. Hi, Interesting about the Littleton West, b. Sussex county, Delaware. I have an Avery West, b. ca. 1760-70, lived in Sussex county, Delaware until 1812, when he moved to Belmont county, OH. In OH he was a lay preacher for the Methodist Church. He m. Elizabeth Pool in Delaware. I have yet to find out who Avery's parents are. If you've ever come across his name, I'd be happy to know. Thanks, Tom

    1. MCKEGG / GALLOWAY / WEST / TURNER / STEPHENSON
    2. Hi everyone! I am posting this to several lists, so I apologize in advance for any duplication. I am trying to find information on the following persons. I am hoping that someone will be able to help me out. Elinor GALLOWAY m. 1782 Greenbrier Co, WVA to Littleton WEST b. 1755 in Sussex co, Delaware. Dates and places of birth and death for Elinor are unknown. Elinor GALLOWAY was the widow of Robert GALLOWAY. I know nothing further about Robert, except that he may have had the following children: John, William, and James who m. Rebecca TOWNSEND. There are GALLOWAYs and WESTs found in Greenbrier county, WVA on the tax lists as late as 1792. The John GALLOWAY on the tax records is thought to be the son of Elinor and Robert GALLOWAY. Elinor's maiden name is thought to have been McKEGG or MacKEAG. I have never been able to find that name listed anywhere, but since I just recently came across this information, I have not really had time to research the name. I have posted this to Kentucky and Missouri mail lists as well because Littleton WEST is found in Madison and other Kentucky counties as well as Ray and Howard Counties in Mo. My LIttleton WEST had a daughter, Jane WEST b. 1797 in Madison co, Ky. who m. John Turner b. 1794 Madison co, Ky. I am trying to determine who her mother is. Her marriage bond lists Sarah STEPHENSON as her mother. However, I have never been able to find any evidence of a marriage between Littleton and Sarah. Jane WEST and John TURNER also named their first born daughter Elinor, which leads me to believe that Elinor McKEGG GALLOWAY is most likely Jane's mother and that Sarah STEPHENSON may have been a stepmother or close relative. If you have any information on any of these people, I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me out. Thanks in advance. Patsy Turner Carnoali
