    1. Parenthetic names on Census schedules
    2. Michael A. Radcliff
    3. Does anyone know what the parentheses around the state's initials mean on a federal census form? In the 1880 Scioto County, Ohio census, for example, my gg grandfather John A. Custer was listed as being born in W.Va. in 1845 (actually Va. at that date, I know) and both his parents are listed as W.Va., but in parentheses. Did this mean the person giving the information didn't know for certain? I'm pretty certain his parents were born in Maryland, anyway, and some other records agree with that. Just wondered what the parentheses meant. Any ideas? -- Regards, Michael A. Radcliff mradclif@marshall.edu

    1. Re: George Peter BARR and BARRS of Frederick Co.
    2. Hi Bill, I am sorry I have been a bit in responding, but I wanted to rechart my information from Cartmell's History, which has been my major source of refrence for the early decendants of George Peter BARR. It gets a bit confusing because so many of the names are continued down through the generations. Here is what I have: A John BARR appears in the western part of Frederick County about 1816, apparently fully grown, because he purchased land. He married Ann HAYMAKER, daughter of Henry HAYMAKER. There is a biographical sketch of the HAYMAKERS in Cartmell, but I only have the BARR info. Further on it states that Oscar, brother of my Robert B. m. Lucy J. KERRELL, daughter of Dempsey KERRELL of Loudoun Co.. Their children were: Virginia m. C. E. HUNTSBERRY, Walter E. m. Miss STINE, Mary E. m. A. E. Dabney, Thomas M. m. a Miss SEAL. Cartmell goes on to say that Oscar BARR had been for a while a merchant in Hampshire County, Va.,W. V.. He moved back to Winchester where he controlled a large mercantile business on North Main Street. He was succeeded by his son Walter E., who became ill and he was succeeded by his son Thomas M.. The dates for this John BARR seem to indicate that he could have been the father of your Sarah (Sally) BARR. Wheather Thomas M. moved on to Ohio, I do not know, but hopefully this may give you some clues to persue. As I continue my quest for the origin of George Peter BARR, I will keep a watch for Sarah. Hope this has been of some help. Bettie

    2. Wilbur Haines
    3. Hi Bettie - Sorry I cannot assist, but your question prompts me to inquire of you: My GGF, Thornton W. HAINES, m. 1823 Frederick Co Sarah (Sally) BARR, described as orphan dau of John BARR. I have not been able to identify her father. She was not of age in 1823 thus might guess her b.d. ca 1806. 1830 they relocated to Franklin Co., OH, she d. 1835, OH Do your files have anything that might shed light? Secondly, the will of Thomas Emerson (resident of Patterson Creek Valley, Hampshire Co from 1779-1806 thence to OH), 1826, Pickaway Co (Circleville) OH mentions a Thomas BARR and the two witnesses are John BARR and Robert BARR. It is possible the John BARR, witness, could be the father of Sarah. My assumption is that these BARR's were family friends who had also relocated from Hampshire/ Frederick to OH. Do these people appear to be part of your clan? Bill P. O. Box 165 The Sea Ranch, CA 95497 Voice 707-785-3268 Fax/Data 707-785-2682
