Thanks to the detailed Frederick Co map: First: Stephens City (Frederick Co) has gone by many names including Stephensburg and Stephens. Second: North Mountain does cross down into Frederick County. It is directly north of Winchester. It was also called Green Spring Mountain and Back Creek Mountain. There is now also Great North Mountain range which forms the southern section of the boundary between Frederick county and West Virginia. This extends northeast beyond the point the boundary jags to the northwest extending to where highway fifty curves around it. By the map it seems to have had also the name Devil's Mountain. Dear Bill, North Mountain extends into Frederick, Shenandoah, and at least Rockingham Counties, maybe more. Sorry, but I don't have a database on the Marker family. I've seen the name numerous times, though. Possibly they meant the Stephens City area which faces North Mountain in Frederick County. Also, there is a Stephenson in Frederick County. These towns are often confused. Re migration from Old Frederick County in the 1700s, it was most often west and south in direction, south being NC, SC, and Tennessee. West was Kentucky and the midwest and sometimes western Pennsylvania. There was very little migration northward across the Blue Ridge Mountains. But there was a very small amount of movement from Culpeper, Orange, Fauquier and Loudoun Counties into Old Frederick. The latter exceptional cases were usually involved in commercial endeavors or political appointments.. Wilmer. Hi! I'm new to the list. Do any of you have any info on a Jemima Pyle m. to Richard Lemaster (Son of Issac Lemaster and Nancy Ann Scott) of Berkeley Co., (W)VA. Richard was b. aft 1773. I don't know anything about Jemima. The reason that I'm interested in her is that my mom and dad both have Lemaster lines, from the looks of it. If I can prove the parents of my great-grandfather, I've got my dad's traced back to Abraham, the first Lemaster to come to America from the Channel Islands. But mom has me stuck. She descends from a Richard and Rebecca Lemaster. I can't prove who Richard's parents are. The most likely, according to some, are Issac and Nancy Lemaster. But, their Richard is married to Jemima. If I could find out when she died, maybe I could determine if he married again. I've tried contacting Berkeley Co. and one of the local genealogists, but they weren't aware of any records. Thanks, Kara
I wish to contact a Hampshire COunty, WVA resident. Am planning a trip to the county and need a detailed map for locating cemeteries, etc. I have written to the Chamber of Commerace for one but got no reply. I am willing to pay for a map and the postage. Anxiously waiting a reply. Thanks. Carol. -- Carol A. In researching the Markers, I have always found them in Frederick County, Va, before they went to Hampshire (Mineral) Co., WV. Some searchers have John Marker dieing in Stevensburg, VA, which is in Culpepper County. His son said he died at North Mountain. North Mountain is in Berkeley Co., WV, and I assume it runs down into Frederick County. You mention Reuben Marker (p11-Historical Records...) and Mary Ann Marker (a great aunt)marrying Hiram Alkire (p71). Don't you believe someone listed Stevensburg when they perhaps meant Stevens City? Also, didn't most migrate west and not north? Maybe you even have something on the Marker's that I don't have.

Hi, I saw your name on the message and was wondering if you had/have any HOOD relatives in South Carolina. My grandfather was Clifford C. Hood m Eleanora McLean. They lived in Hartsville, Darlington Co., SC. Linda sandlapper@sumter.net
Hello Bettie, I am also interested in HILL. Would you please let me know what you have for them? Thank you, Georgia
Dear Meg: Yes, I am interested in Berkeley Co, Hill info. Thanks for the offer. Some of the kids went that way. Lyle Corder
Dear Bettie: Thanks so much for the Hill info; I will make hard copy and save it. I do believe the George name was used over and over. Lyle Corder
I am wondering if anyone has information on the origins of Elisha (b 1792) and LeRoy (b 1800) NEWCOMB or are also seeking such information. They show up in Frederick Co prior to 1820; both listed as born in Virginia. Elisha married Eve LAWYER, daughter of Adam LAWYER, bond 25 Sep 1816 with Henry NAVELL. LeRoy married first Sarah EPLER, bond 7 Aug 1819 with Peter EPLER; m2 Rebecca KLYNE, bond 8 Nov 1828 with Elias Jones. In a 1987 query to the Handley Library in Winchester, a Margaret Newcomb of Hastings, Nebraska adds the name of Edward NEWCOMB to the set of brothers. Has anyone been in contact with Ms. Newcomb in recent years? Jim Scofield, Livermore CA; Scofield@ccnet.com

Hi Lyle, I have the 1850-60-70 Hardy Co., W.V. Census'. Don't know if this will help or not , but the 1850 census shows a George Hill, 27; Emily C., 22; Jacob K., 3. They do not show in the 1860 census. There is an Isaac Hill, 46; Maria, 42; William,17; Jacob, 15; Mary, 13; Charles L, 11, Isaac F., 9; Samuel A., 9; Ann R., 7; George W., 5; John P.,1. Both of these George's are too early to be the one you are looking for, but might be his father. I listed all of the names on the chance that some of the other names might be familiar to your friend. Much of my family started out in Frederick Co. Va., but ended up in Hardy Co. W.V. With the way that area changed, when I am looking for someone, I check all of the surrounding counties in both states. Good luck Bettie Myers Wehland
To whom it concerns: Bullskin is a creek in Old Frederick County, and a specific area known to early settlers. The head spring of Bullskin Creek is about one mile south of Summit Point in present-day Jefferson County, WV. You ought to check this out before searching in Pennsylvania. Wilmer L.
