    2. Help! Is anyone researching the Stephenson surname? I believe my ancestors origins are in Fredrick County, but am not positive at this point. I have traced my line back to James Stephenson who was born in Virginia in 1798. I believe this James to have been the son of James Stephenson and Margaret Smith. Does anyone know anything about these James? Was James (the spouse of Margaret Smith) the son of James Stephenson and Anne Garner? I would really appreciate any help . David Stephenson

Peter Shoul * BOWMAN, CHARLES b~1797 son of Thomas and Jane Rhodes Bowman Only the * names are definitely my ancestors, the others are possible connections. I suspect that the Charles Bo(w)man associated with Michael Cresap may have been the father or uncle of my 5G Grandfather Thomas Bowman. Thomas Bowman and son(s) were boat builders in the Wheeling WV area on the 1820 US Census. They moved to the Vermillion Co. IN /Vermilion Co. IL area in the late 1820's along with several inter-related families: Morgan, Cochran and Prickett and others. Thomas and Jane Bowman had the following children: CHARLES b~1797/1798 who married CATHERINE COCHRAN on23May1816 in Tyler Co. WV; they had the following children: JANE b~1817, married PETER WELLS 12Nov1833 in Vermillion Co. IN; DRUSILLA b~1820 in VA/WV, married GEORGE W. NOLAN on 18Sep1843 in Vermillion Co. MARIA : married STEPHEN BAINBRIGE 22Aug1839 in Vermillion Co. IN; and probably other unknown children of Thomas and Jane. These Bowman men are found near Thomas: JOHN: in Tyler Co. WV near Thomas and Jane Bowman in 1820 Census DANIEL: listed with Moses and Charles Bowman in Vermillion Co. IN early land owners in the History of Vermillion Co. IN; GEORGE: married Elizabeth Miller on 30 Oct1843 in Vermillion Co. IN, she was a relative, possibly a sister to Moses Bowman's first wife Nancy Miller; I don't have their ages, they could be sons or brothers/nephews/cousins of Thomas Bowman. Thomas and Jane Bowman's son Charles married Catherine Cochran and I think that her family were Methodists at that time. Charles and Catherine's son Stephen Franklin obit says that he and his wife Sarah converted to the United Brethren Church 3 years after their marriage (~1858) then eventually united with the Methodist Church. Stephen Franklin Bowman was the brother of my 3G Grandmother Drusilla Bowman Nolan. ################ Note from Susan: I have recently found some info on the LDS Ancestral file which shows the above Charles ( who served in the Rev. War), as a son of John Hance Bowman, but doesn't list that Charles' children. I do think that my Thomas (born ~1767-1769 near the South Branch of the Potomac River, possibly a son of Charles of the Rev War) ties into this Bowman family found on the MD/VA border. I also have some info on a BOWMAN that I haven't tied to mine yet but they may be related. This was sent to me because Jackson Co. Iowa borders Allamakee Co. Iowa . ******************************** From "History of Jackson Co. Iowa 1989": 'JACOB BOWMAN b 14Nov1798 at Mt. Clinton, VA son of PETER and MARY HEATWOLE BOWMAN. Peter Bowman's father JACOB BOWMAN was the first settler in Bucks Co. PA. Jacob Bowman's father WENDELL BOWMAN was the first settler in Lancaster Co. PA, having migrated from Switzerland in 1707, a member of the Mennonite Pequot Creek Settlement. Jacob Bowman (the 2nd) married ELIZABETH KEISTER 30Nov1823 at Franklin, VA. She was the daughter of GEORGE and SUSAN PECK KEISTER and grandaughter of FREDRICK and HANNAH DYER KEISTER. Jacob and Elizabeth had 14 children, 11 of which migrated to Jackson Co. IA with their parents in 1851. They came from Mt. Clinton to Parkersberg VA on the Ohio River and from there down the Ohio to the Mississippi, then north to Jackson Co. IA. The children of Jacob and Elizabeth: GEORGE WASHINGTON; JACOB KEISTER; WILLIAM MALCOM; BENJAMIN FRANKLIN; STEPHEN HAMILTON; SUSAN (LARY); MARY FRANCES (KENDALL); SARAH (DEAN) ; HANNAH (RATHBURN); NANCY (SIMS); ELIZABETH (SIMS); and POLLY, JOHN and "an infant who died." ************************* Even if it only looks remotely like there may be a connection, please let me know. Sometimes it is just the naming patterns that help make the "vital clue". It has just been the last year or so that I have made the connection from my 3G Grandmother Drusilla Bowman Nolan to her parents Charles and Catherine Cochran Bowman and her grandparents Thomas and Jane Rhoads Bowman. This came about by finding similar naming patterns and then tracking down Charles' will and finding bio's in various places. Several distant cousins had been using the wrong names for Drusilla Bowman Nolan's parents for 20 to 30 years and therefore were not getting anywhere! I live in Houston, TX. We have a good genealogy library here. I will gladly do reciprocal research for you. Ie, there were 10 major Potter lines that came over in the early years. As soon as I get a larger disk I'm going to collate and expand my Potter Data Base. There's a lot of them out there but somewhere along the line there probably related to Le Potere. RSVP Bob

    3. Carol: I am a descendant of Cornelius Bowman b 1740, d 1826 in Clay County, KY, m Susannah Abbott. He seems to be issue of an immaculate conception. I have been unable to find anything on his parents. I keep working on it hoping to find something someday. I am suspicious that he comes from a German Baumann line, but have nothing even suggestive of that. English/Irish Bowmans in the VA and NC where I find Cornelius to have been seem to have arrived in the Colonies after 1740. Are you a Bowman? The line for Shiverdecker (?Spellings) starts in Va. around 1750's. Michael was a Rev. War Soldier according to the Va. Militia list and Preble Co. Ohio list of War Pensioners. In the Va. Militia list a Jacob ?Spelling Shiveltaker is listed. Jacob seems to be Michaels father according to deeds for property purchased in Stephensburg in 1765. I realize this is actually Stephens City Va. present day. Michael sold his lots and moved to Kanawha Co. in 1792. This area is now W. V. The family moved to Ohio around 1820 approx. and Michael died in Preble Co. Ohio 1833. His wife was Ann Garrett b approx. 176? d. 1845 in Preble Co. Ohio. My Purtee line is George b. approx. 1756 in the Blue Lickes of Kentucky. According to Kentucky no white children were born in that area that early in the century. It could have been Penn., W.V., or Va. so if any info on the Purtee line I would appreciate it. This is a pretty lone first note.
