    1. Nicely/Knisely family Shenandoah co Va
    2. Harold Miller
    3. I am interested in sending a query to Wilmer L. Kerns about an article he wrote for The West Virginia Advocate. Does anyone know how I might get in touch with him? For anyone else's interest, I am trying to learn whether research has been done on the descendants of Rebecca Stump married to John Carder. Rebecca would have been born circa 1828 in Hampshire County, Va., daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Boggess) Stump, who had the following siblings: John B., Wm. B., Sarah, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Joseph, Jane, Jacob, and Malinda. I would really like to know whether John and Rebecca (Stump) Carder had a daughter also named Rebecca and a son also named John. I ask because in my Nicely line, I am missing the maiden name of Abram Nicely's wife who was named Rebecca? This Abram Nicely had a sister named Julia who married a John Carder. I thought possibly both Nicely siblings married into the Carder family. Abram and Rebecca Nicely named one of their children, Sarah, possibly after Rebecca (Stump) Nicely's sister, Sarah. This Nicely family lived in Allegany County, Md. in 1850, but seemed to have ties in Hampshire County, VA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, [email protected] Barbara - Nicely/Knisely, etc. were in Head of Household census for Shenandoah County Virginia 1785. My Turney family was also there. Eve Turney married a John Teeter (they were in same area) and moved to Washington Co VA around 1774. their daughter Mary married a Nicely/Knisely who had also moved from Shenandoah Co Va.....it was Frederick Co, then Dunmore, finally Shenandoah. I have a little info on the family if you are interested. From where the Turneys were located near Woodstock, Va - it was not that far to Hampshire Co Va. So probably before the Rev War the Nicely family was in VA, and even for a while after. So I am sure the family in Maryland in 1850 - that the ties you see to Hampshire Co Va, it probably is the same general family. Mary Turney Miller [email protected]

There's a book by Penny & O.D. Linder, "The Dever & Related Families," 1998, McClain Printing Co., Parsons, WV 26287 that gives great detail about the WV DEVER/DEAVER line. The Linders live there now & have traced their line back from WV to MD, ca 1650. I have read that Penny served many years as Pres. of the WV Genealogical Society. You can buy the book through Amazon http://www.amazon.com. Penny's email is <[email protected]> I think you will find a wealth of information there. 3. Can anyone help Sandy? -- Subject: Frederick%20Co%20Page Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 18:41:02 EST From: [email protected] Hi my name is Sandy Brown I live in Iowa and an looking for information on the LEMLEY family. I am a decendant of George LEMLEY and Catherine YOHO. Untill today I knew nothing further than George on the LEMLEY side. But I found a web page by Wayne Green, It says that Georges Father was John LEMLEY, born (Date unknown) in New Jersey and that he died in Fredrick County, VA, on Nov 4, 1784. It lists his spouse as unknown, they had 3 children listed a boy (George) and 2 unnamed girls, married to Michael HUFFMAN and John KERNS. It had a description of a will, that lists the names of George, Michael, and John (son of Adam) to recieve things. and listed exrs. David DEDRICK George L-------, and Philip BASH. It also mentioned his wife to get a house and furnature, so I would assume that the wife and children were alive when he died. My question is this how can this be verified?? I was told to always check the facts for myself and be sure they are correct, how do I find out if all of this is correct?? If this is my George LEMELY he moved to Penn. Any Ideas on how to verify would be helpful!! Thank you, Sandy:-)

    1. Clergyman Valentine Powers & McDonald...

    3. Thanks to several for info concerning Valentine Powers, the clergyman of frontier VA in the 1700's. The following link has some of the marriages performed and recorded by him: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvhardy/hmarr.htm Here is a link to many marriages (including that of Valentine Powers in 1815) conducted in the Hardy Co. WV area with various clergymen named: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvhardy/harmar.htm Valentine Powers may well have been 'the namesake' for my Valentine McDonald-McDaniel-McDonnel, born 1760 in the South Branch settlement area, son of Joseph McD--. Does anyone perchance have info concerning Joseph McDonald-McDaniel-McDonnell in the 1750's - 1760's of frontier VA? Please note that 'my' Joseph was apparently *not* the Joseph McD-- listed in many entries of Chalkey's Chronicles. 'This' Joseph McDonald was son of Bryan McDonald Sr. of the Beverly Manor settlement area of frontier VA (present Botetourt Co. VA.) For general information, since Chalkey's work for early Augusta Co. VA *excluded* the Northern Neck land grant area, people who were living in the South Branch area of present Hampshire County WV, and most of Hardy County WV, would generally not be found in Chalkey's Chronicles. Thanks for any help. Neil McDonald

Valentine Powers was indeed the 'clergy-man.' He was evident in the Hampshire and Old-Frederick County VA area records in the late 1700's and 1800's, performing many marriages and other acts of clergy. He was of the commonly known 'Dunkard' faith per my readings. I am wondering whether 'Valentine Powers' may have been a father-son 'Sr.' and 'Jr.' since the recorded activities of Valentine Powers covered a long time span. Does anyone have further info for this Valentine Powers? Neil McDonald

    1. Bull Skin/Smithfield/Middleway/Wizard Clip
    2. I am trying to find information on the area variously known as Bull Skin, Smithfield, Middleway and Wizard Clip VA/WV. I understand it is in present day Jefferson County near the Berkeley County and Virginia line. The Board of Geographic Names told me the area was originally called Bull Skin, after the creek by the same name, but was later changed to Smithfield or Smithfield Estates. Its name was later changed to Middleway because it was halfway between Winchester and Harpers Ferry and because there was already a Smithfield somewhere else in Virginia and the mail was getting lost. Supposedly, in the late 1700s or early 1800s there was a famous haunting there by a demon who cut up things with a pair of scissors, after which the residents began calling the place "Wizards Clip" or "Clip" and began calling themselves "Clippers." My fourth g grandfather, Samuel FRENCH resided there from before 1792 until at least 1820 and My third g grandfather, Walter W. FRENCH" and his sisters were born there. I would appreciate any leads on finding any history of the area. I have seen reference to a "Middleway Historical Society" but I haven't had any luck at finding an address or a website. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jay French [email protected]
