Hello, I have a xeroxed copy of two pages from an unidentified book. Could someone please identify this book for me? Author? Publishing data? etc... I am NOT interested in THIS FAMILY. This material was part of the pages I have and I am sharing them in case they (1) help me to identify the book &/or (2) help another researcher who IS interested in these surnames. Following is the material from this "source unknown" book: (page 255 of a book, Source Unknown) HOLLINGSWORTH Thomas Hollingsworth (b. 1661) was the third child of Valentine and Ann Ree Hollingsworth. Thomas sister Katheran (Catherine, born 1663) married George Robinson and they were the parents of George Robinson (b. 1710 c.) who married Mary McKay, daughter of Robert McKay Sr. Thomas married Margaret Calvert and they had only one child, Abraham Hollingsworth (b. 19 March 1687). Margaret died seven months later on 1 October 1687. Thomas then married Grace Cooke of Concord and their children were: Isaac (born 16 June 1693, d. 8 July 1699), Elizabeth (b. 8 January 1695, who married ? Strode in 1718), Hannah (b. 17 March 1698, who married William Dixon / Dickson in 1718), Thomas (b. 23 February 1699, who married Judith Lampley in 1723), Jacob (b. 4 March 1705, who married Rachel Chandler on 23 April 1729), Sarah (b. 7 October 1706, who married John Dixon/Dickson at Newark Meeting House on 29 October 1724), Joseph (b. 11 May 1709, who married Martha Houghton in 1730) and Grace Hollingsworth (b. 9 May 1712). (source #180) The Hollingsworths of the late 1600s and early 1700s lived in the present-day area of Wilmington, Delaware and also in New Castle County, Delaware, Cecil County, Maryland and Chester County, Pennsylvania . Thomas Hollingsworth (b. 1661) died on 2 April 1727 and his will was. proved in New Castle County, Delaware on 13 April 1727. (source #181) Abraham Hollingsworth sold 70 acres of land on the west branch of Elk River to Rowland Chambers on 14 December 1719; both men were from Cecil County, Maryland. On 7 February 1720/21, he sold three parcels of land, containing a total of 315 acres in the same area adjacent to Martin Cartmells land, to Henry Hollingsworth. Hello, I have a xeroxed copy of two pages from an unidentified book. Could someone please identify this book for me? Author? Publishing data? etc... I am also interested in trying to establish IF this COCHRAN family is related to *mine* .... Following is the material from this "source unknown" book: (pages 254 & 255 of a book, Source Unknown) GLOVER William Glover was the administrator of the estate of Edward Glover, deceased (probably his father) in Orange County, Virginia, on 28 July 1741. On 3 July 1736, Edward Glover was a witness to four land sales (deeds) by William Jollife and his wife Mary in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. (source #171) At Edwards estate sale, William Glover purchased horses, cows and miscellaneous items including: six calf skins, 176 pounds of nails; 409 pounds of grey deer skins, nine pounds of beaver and other fur; 30 pounds of drist leather; a large parcel of thread and brass, 11 gimbletts (small tools for punching holes), some knitting needles and mohair; buttons, pins and needles; seven pieces of tape and remnants; remnants of carsey, sowing silk, silk laces, two remnants of callico, two pieces of gustin and two pieces plus a remnant of Douglass. Evidence suggests from these items that both Edward and William were tailors and furriers, fashioning leather coats and leather breeches (trousers) . (source #172) William purchased 215 acres from Thomas Rutherford on 28 April 1742; this land was located on the east side of the main road from the Potomac River to Jost Hites land. (source #173) (Tract 56A, Map 7) The main road is present-day U.S. Highway 522, as it was before the construction of Interstate Highway 81. On 6 March 1760, William received a Fairfax grant for 355 acres. (source #174) surveyed on 4 November 1752, this land (adjacent east of his 215-acre patent land) ran along U.S. Highway 17/50. He and his wife Susannah sold the 355 acres to Hugh Lenox, William Scott and John Mitchell (merchants of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia) for 214 pounds, 8 shillings on 7 February 1765. (source #175) William Glover was deceased by 2 June 1789 when his will (dated 1786) was proved in Frederick County Court. His will instructed his wife Susannah to sell the land lying on the north side of the Great Road leading from Winchester to Falmouth (U.S. Highway 17, southeast to Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia). He willed the remainder of his 215 acres to his grandson William Coughran (Cochran). Glover also mentioned grandchildren Agnes, Elizabeth, Mary and Rachel, younger daughters of William Cochran, Sr. He bequeathed one shilling to William Cochran, Sr., stating in his will he having had enough given him already. Glover appointed his wife Susannah and grandson William Cochran, Jr. as his executors. (source #176) As executors, Susannah and William sold the nine acres 97 poles on the northeast side of the road leading from Winchester to Berrys Ferry and to Fredericksburg (adjacent south of Falmouth), on 3 June 1789. It was sold to Susannahs grandson Robert Cochran (Williams brother) for 37 pounds. (source #177) (part of Tract 56A) A John, Samuel and Robert Glover were in Albemarle County, Virginia where they sold land in 1747. (source #178) William Cochran Sr. was deceased by 1 December 1795 when his will (written 10 January 1795) was.. proved in Frederick County Court. He listed his second wife Mary (probably not William and Susannah Glovers daughter) and children James, Robert, William, Ann (wife of William McKean), Margaret (wife of Isaiah Curlet), Martha (wife of Benjamin Langley), Agnes, Elizabeth, Mary and Rachell. The only listing of VA Wills and Administrations that I can locate covers the period 1638-1800. I need to find the County in VA where Thomas HALL, according to the DAR Lineage Books, died in 1825. His first wife was Barbara Dickenson and I am trying to determine if Thomas was the father of my gggg grandfather, Dickerson (Dickenson) Hall. Requests for copies of DAR applications take an undetermined amount off time. Any and all help appreciated. <[email protected]>
Hi, I was on vacation and off the list for a few weeks, so I don't know where the discussion of tobacco as currency stands at present, but I just came across the following in "A History of Randolph County West Virginia ..." by Dr. A. S. Bosworth (Elkins, WV, 1916), pp. 175-6 and thought I would share it in case it hasn't shown up before: "From the formation of the government of Virginia until 1794, tobacco was the legal currency of the state, one hundred pounds being equivalent to one pound in coin. One pound was the equivalent of 3 1/3 cents. "By an act of 1788, the county court was for the trial of all presentments and criminal prosecutions, suits at common law and in chancery, where the sum exceeded five pounds or 500 pounds of tobacco, depending therein and continuing for the space of six days unless the business should be sooner determined...." Thanks to all of you who sent his address. Phil explained that his copy had a sticker with the address.... mine doesn't have that, so I am glad you all shared the address. I purchased my copy immediately after it was published from Frontier Press in Texas. Perhaps the publisher got tired of receiving such requests as mine! Thanks again to you all, Ellen
Would like information on following ca. 1750s-1770s: Charles Lynch, Felix Rennick/Rennix/Renick, and Peter Shoemaker. Thanks, Sara Patton

Michael Cresap, is a handwritten note on the back of the survey, written in Guy Broadwater's (surveyor) hand : "The complaint of Abner Anderson against Garriot Pendegrass that he Built a hous & Cleared a plantation Garriot Pendegrass Sold his place for fivety pounds and he & his Wife & Children Came to My house for then they had now (no) place to put there (their) heads In & Itt Rained then I told him that he was Welcome to Such ass I had __? __ (until) he Could provide a place for him Selph two or three days after that I goes Out about My Business & my Wife had Som ocation (occasion) to Go out of ye dore then This Pendegrass Shut ye dore & Swore She nor hur husband Should never Come Into ye hous again the I Came home to ye hous & (with) Abraham Richardon he stands In ye dore Whith an axx In his hand & Swore a bitter Oath that If I Offered to Step One foot farther he would splitt my Branes Open I steped Up to ye dore he Up Whith ye axx and If itt had not abin for Abraham Richardson Cetched (caught) hold of ye axx he would have bin ass good ass his Word to splitt my Brains Open & I never Could gitt Into my hows again In a Short time he Sells that plantation for Sixty pound then he watched Coll Cressop son after he had built a house & Swore he would Splitt Any Body Brains Out that Offered to Com there Any More I doe be Leave (believe) there Could nott be Less than fourty people & all whith One accord said they Belived that there was Nott Such a Roge (rogue) to be found In ye Countery."
Neil- Just wanted to set the record straight on Chalkley's Augusta Co court abstracts for list readers. You are correct in stating that many of the settlers living within current day Hampshire boundaries, which was part of the Fairfax/Northern Neck land grants, are not listed in Augusta county court records because they were in Frederick and later Hampshire County. However, many Hardy, Grant, and Pendleton County names on the southern part of the South Branch of the Potomac, South Fork, Lunice Creek, Patterson Creek, etc. do show up in Chalkley, especially prior to Hampshire becoming a county. So I wouldn't count it out altogether as a source, especially if you have early family living in the southern end of the South Branch, around Moorefield or Petersburg areas. For instance, Michael Harness, who lived on the South Branch in today's Hardy County, is listed in Augusta, Frederick, Orange, Hampshire and Hardy county records. Thanks for the GREAT ad you found in the PA Gazette. That's one of the best things I've read in ages!! Sara Patton
My ancestor, Sarah [MC CARTY] RUSK [c1764, VA?KY?--aft 1850, Harrison co., VA] m1: Benjamin R. RUSK [no dates]; m2: George HAGERTY/HAGGERTY [chr. 17 Jun 1754, St. James Parish, Prince George co., MD--c1814/17, Harrison co., VA?]. Sarah's son of her first marriage, Benjamin RUSK, was said to have been "half Indian." Sarah's daughter by her second marriage, Sarah Ann HAGERTY was my ancestor. George HAGERTY'S father was John HAGERTY [no dates]. My questions:1) Who were Sarah McCARTY's parents; where were they from? any info on them. 2) Need more info on the HAGERTYs. Who was an Indian? Sarah? or Benjamin RUSK??? Marilyn [email protected]
