Can anyone tell me if Mrs. Zirk is still a librarian in Moorefield. If so, could I reach her by email? Thanks, Judy
Judy, As of this past summer the Moorefield library was not on line. Margie Zirk is still the librarian, unless that has changed very recently. The address is 102 N. Main Street, Moorefield, West Virginia 26836. Phone (304)538-6560. Margie and her small staff are teriffic people and are most helpful. Best of luck. Bettie Myers Wehland (transplanted to Maryland, but a Moorefield native.)
I too would be interested in learning more about lands lying along the South Branch, as my ancestor seemed to have purchased several parcels there. I have been unable to place them with any accuracy, so all help is appreciated. Ellen [email protected] Subject: Early Land Surveys in South Branch Valley Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 11:27:42 EST From: [email protected] To: [email protected] I am trying to determine the location of early surveys and how the lots were laid out on the various Fairfax holdings in the South Branch Valley. I have read Charles Morrison's work on the topic but would like to know more about what and where the original records are, if anyone has tried to plot out the location of the various lots, etc. Am looking for South Branch Manor in particular but am also interested in Patterson Creek, So. Fork and Wappacomo surveys as well. I understand that in 1995, WV State Archives sponsored some kind of local history workshop and that Mrs. Zirk, the Moorefield Librarian gave a workshop on Fairfax land grants. Also Galtjo L. Geertsema, land surveyor of Martinsburg, also had some project on locating these early land surveys. Does anyone have info on these or other sources for this type of information? Washington Co., Maryland has a wonderful genealogy collection at the public library in Hagerstown. However, the genealogy collection is (or was) open fewer hours then the rest of the library. So it would be wise to call for the hours the collection is opened, so you can plan your time. I am searching for information on Benjamin Harper, born in 1770 in Virginia, who married a Charlotte ??? in 1792 in Frederick Couny, Virginia, and who died in 1844. His children were supposedly John (born 10 Jul 1798), Thomas (born28 Sep 1800), George Harper (born 7 Aug 1804), Levi Harper (born around 1808), and Benjamin F. (in 1814), all in Frederick County. Many of these family members moved to Ohio during the time when Ohio opened up for settlement. I have information to share. Paul Leiss, of Frederickburg VA.

Purchased the Berryville Celebrates 1798-1998 publication looking for NELSON. There was one reference to the name. Dr. John "Jack" Nelson was a physician there in Berryville. He died 1806. He was said to have practiced in Berryville and resided at ROSEVILLE. Where is ROSEVILLE in Clarke Co? I'm thinking it's a homeplace rather than a town. Right? Help me please, Karen Nelson Hangsleben

Is there someone who knows all about the change in county lines for Frederick/Dunmore/Shenandoah counties in Va? Very early records, say 1750s. I need help with some land deeds I have found. I know my ancestor purchased land in Frederick Co Va 1762, then it was Dunmore, it was Shenaodoah when he sold it in 1787. but now in Dunmore records I have found where he sold some land in 1753, and it says he was from Augusta Co Va. Says land was surveyed in Dec 1753. Mentions land where he now lives......and it sounds like the same land near Woodstock Va - but how could that be Augusta Co? I need help with when the various counties had court houses where land could be recorded, etc. As you can tell, I am very confused right now. Mary [email protected]
Flo: I noticed the name Lenox and would like to know if anyone researching the name has any information on a Lenox (Sarah or Harriet) b. ca. 1832 that married a Robert Hudson. According to the 1880 Allegany Co. MD census, she was born in a part of VA that later became WV, her father was born in Delaware (as was Robert Hudson and both his parents) and her mother was born in MD. On the death certificate of their daughter Sarah Ann (Hudson) Twigg, Loinax is listed as the mother's maiden name but believe it "may" have been Lenox.
