    3. Barbara, There is a book "The Romance of Greenland Gap" by Mark Hale mostly the story of the Abijah Dolly family and I think your John Richard Dolly and John Dolly may be a part of that family. I found the book very interesting. The Dolly family lived in the area which is now Scherr. Perhaps you can get it on inter-library loan. The one I had came from the West Virginia University Library in Morgantown. Betty

    3. Have you checked the Greene Co., OH list for Osburns and Baldwins? Seems I've seen the Osburn name come across. And there is/was a town named Osburne in the county.

    1. Osburn / Baldwin
    2. I have an ADAM W. OSBURN who married MARIAH NANCY BALDWIN in Frederick Co. Va. on 27 Aug. 1835. Shortly thereafter on 10 Nov. 1835, Mariah Nancy Osburn of Frederick Co., Va. purchased land in Greene Co., Ohio. The couple moved to Greene Co. In August 1838 the Greene Co., Ohio Common Pleas Court appointed Adam W. Osburn guardian of Elizabeth Baldwin, daughter of Jonah deceased. Frederick Co., Va. marriages reveal that Jonah had married Nancy Curl 8 Dec. 1828. So he apparently went to Greene Co. Ohio as well. Does anybody know if he is Mariah's brother? Other Baldwins who appear to have married in Frederick Co. and gone to Greene Co. were Rees and David. Is anybody out there researching these two families of Osburn and Baldwin? Cathy Gowdy

    1. Carder Family
    2. Is anybody on this list researching the Carder family. I am specifically looking for information on the children of Abbot and Edna Carder. Abbot was married three times and Edna was his third wife. Their children's names were Catherine, Susan, Eurice, Lavinia, Jackson, Frederick, Ann, Hannah, Sanford, Sarah, Margaret, Joseph and Patsy. I believe that one of the girls may have married Riley Twigg, but need proof. Can anyone tell me more about the daughters listed here and who they married? Thank you for any help you can give. I am also trying to learn whether research has been done on the descendants of Rebecca Stump married to John Carder. Rebecca would have been born circa 1828 in Hampshire County, Va., daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Boggess) Stump, who had the following siblings: John B., Wm. B., Sarah, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Joseph, Jane, Jacob, and Malinda. I would really like to know whether John and Rebecca (Stump) Carder had a daughter also named Rebecca and a son also named John. I ask because in my Nicely line, I am missing the maiden name of Abram Nicely's wife who was named Rebecca? This Abram Nicely had a sister named Julia who married a John Carder. I thought possibly both Nicely siblings married into the Carder family. Abram and Rebecca Nicely named one of their children, Sarah, possibly after Rebecca (Stump) Nicely's sister, Sarah. This Nicely family lived in Allegany County, Md. in 1850, but seemed to have ties in Hampshire County, VA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Barbara

    1. James Marquis Land Sales
    2. Charles Crickman
    3. Linda Stowell requested info on Ann Marquis BONHAM. Before moving from Frederick Co, Va to Ohio, Moses and Ann sold land to James McCauley on 5 Apr 1808. This land consisted of approx 21A that was Ann's share of her father James Marquis's estate (Fred Co DB31/57). James Marquis' estate at his death in 1804 contained 193A located less than a mile SW of the Opequon Church in Kernstown Va. It was distributed as 9 shares of 21A each to James' children with dower rights to his wife Mary. I have found Frederick Co deeds in which for 8 of the 9 shares were sold by eight of James' children between 1807 and 1814. The buyers were Daniel McCauley and his sons, who lived on abutting land, and Nicholas Kerns. Eventually Kerns owned 7 of the 21A shares and Daniel McCauley owned the eight share. A deed for the ninth share has not been found. I am attempting to define the boundaries of the various 21A tracts (particularly the McCauley piece) but have been thwarted by deeds that refer to the land only as "one ninth share of James Marquis estate" with absolutely no further description in all of the 8 deeds. I know the approx location of the full 193A but need to learn the partitioning that occurred by the estate distribution. County court order and chancery court records regarding this estate action have been searched to no avail. Can anyone shed any additional light on this estate transaction or subsequent land sales, or even a promising research lead?

Nathaniel and Deborah had a son James Haworth who married Susannah Miller in 1850 and another son, David Wade Haworth who married Sidney Furgason. Deborah Furgason was b. 2/24/1805 in Frederick Co. 2. Pam Wilson
    3. I'm trying to track the movements through Old Frederick County of members of the ARLEDGE or ALDRIDGE family of Northumberland Co, VA in the 1740s. Recently, Mike Marshall sent me the following notes he made from the records of old Frederick County, VA: <<1745---ARLEDGE, John--Given power of attorney by Hannah Thomas for the collection of sums of money owed her by William Thomas Esq. and Henry Tapscot. Recorded 4 Mar 1745. The people mentioned in this power of attorney appear to have come from Northumberland County, Virginia. Insight into this power of attorney may be gained by taking note of the will of one Richard Thomas of Great Wicocomoco Parish, Northumberland County, dated 7 Sep 1741 and proved 9 Nov 1741. This will makes specific bequests to sons William and Richard as well as to daughters Ann Sampson and Elizabeth ALDRIDGE. It divides the remainder of Richard Thomas' estate among his four children--Richard, HANNAH Thomas, Robert and Mary. The executors of Richard Thomas' will were his brother, William Thomas, and Henry Tapscott. Witnesses were Dennis Conway and Moses Thomas. These documents suggest that John ARLEDGE and Hannah Thomas may have been living in Frederick County, Virginia in 1745. And, John ARLEDGE/ALDRIDGE was quite likely the husband of Elizabeth Aldridge nee Thomas, and the brother-in-law of Hannah Thomas. The power of attorney given to John Arledge in Frederick County, Virginia in 1745 was probably to enable him to collect Hannah's portion of the residuary estate of her deceased father, Richard Thomas.>> This John ARLEDGE (aka ALDRIDGE) apparently married Elizabeth THOMAS, daughter of Richard Thomas and sister of Hannah Thomas. John and Elizabeth ARLEDGE soon appeared to settle in SC along the Wateree River, where John applied for a grant on 2 Feb 1748. If any of you familiar with the records of old Frederick County during this period could check to see if there are further mentions of *any* ARLEDGE or ALDRIDGE in this county, I would greatly appreciate it. John also had some brothers who were in SC with him, and I wonder if they might have gone to Frederick County along the way as well. Also, if you have knowledge of any of the other families mentioned in these documents, please let me know. Thanks! Pam Wilson [email protected]

His mother was Ann Bonham, from Indenture of Apprenticeship dated May 1, 1830, Knox County, Ohio. BONHAM; Matilda BONHAM to Benona AXTELL, husband of her sister Amanda BONHAM; Mary Ann BONHAM to AXTELL, Smiley H. BONHAM to AXTELL; Thomas M. BONHAM to Isaac Hadley. 1. Rent Rolls
    2. Ellen Copper
    3. Ken and list, Do the rent rolls serve the same genealogical purpose as a tax list? I have been trying to pin down just when my ancestors left Frederick Co, and the tax records do not exist for that period. The last record of their presence in Frederick Co (a deed that states they were of Frederick Co) is 1774, and the first record of their presence in Washington Co, PA is a tax list of 1781. I need to narrow that down, perhaps rent rolls would do it? All help appreciated! Thanks Ellen Copper

I am in search of the parents of (or any other info pertaining to) William Williams (1772-1842) m.Sophia Freshour (1780-1879) married on Aug 27, 1797 in Berkeley Co. - or perhaps more info on his siblings (Enoch, Nathaniel, Catherine, Thomas, John A., Neoma). William crossed the mountains into Harrison Co. WV in 1799. I have found the marriage date for Enoch Williams and Lydia Felton (m. Sept 14, 1797 in Frederick Co.) If both William and Enoch were married there, perhaps the family resided close by although family history speaks more of residing close to Philadephia. Most of the family ended up in Harrison Co., WV. Any help appreciated.

    1. Rout Remy Whiteman Hutson Dougherty Brown Wills Glenn Hunt Burke......
    2. Laura McKenzie
    3. Can anyone tell me if any of these surnames (or folks) are familiar in Hampshire or Frederick County? This Gath was part of old Montgomery Co KY. I'm looking at finding out where most of the occupants were from so I can find out if Thomas C. Brown came to Gath from a county other than Hampshire. The first trustees of Gath were William Burke, William Caldwell, Thomas C. Brown, and Alexander Simpson. William Burke was a land owner on Locust Creek. His will is recorded in Fleming County and it was probated in October, 1801. According to the plat of the town in the old court order book, Gath contained 103 in-lots and 10 out-lots. These 113 lots contained all together 100 acres. The streets were named East, North Cross, Main, Lower Water, and Upper Water. In the center of the town was a public square containing two acres. Running north was a street called Out Street, which led in the direction of Flemingsburg. At the May term of Fleming Court, 1799, John Hunt and Manley Brown were appointed to mark out the bounds for a warehouse in the town of Gath for the inspection of flour and hemp. They finally made their report in July, 1799, stating they had laid off lots 12 and 13 (half-acre lots) for the warehouses -- beginning on the bank of the creek, thence down the same 10 rods, then off at right angles 15 rods, for quantity. Isaac Terhune bought the first lots, numbers 5 and 50, in Gath on March 10, 1800. The trustees at that time were Isaac Lawson, Archibald Glenn, William Caldwell, and Edward Johnson. (This change of persons on the board of trustees indicates that a number of people were interested and involved in the town.) On May 12, 1800, Joseph Denton, Archibald Glenn, William P. Ramey, and Andrew Wills were appointed to view and mark out the nearest and best way for a road from the ford on the Licking River at the town of Gath to intersect the road from Flemingsburg to Myers' ferry at or near Terhune's. On July 14, 1800, they made their report, stating that they had completed said order. On the same day Byram Routt, Archie Remy, Shardlow Whiteman, Skinner Hutson, and Roger Dougherty made a report that they had viewed and marked out the road from the mouth of Locust to Abraham Tout's, running with the town (Gath) line until it crossed Locust then up Locust to the mouth of the South Lick, then to near the head of the said lick and crossing the ridge to said Tout's. On Nov. 10, 1800, it was ordered that the road from the mouth of Locust Creek to intersect the road from Flemingsburg be established as a public road and that Shardlow Whiteman be appointed overseer.
