Sandy, "Inmate" is not an occupation, it is separate from "yeoman." Inmate is defined as "Boarder, not head of family" in the Pennsylvania Archives records of inhabitants in the 1700's. It is possible, if not likely, that this defintion was used by other states as well. Hope this helps. Neil McDonald
My ancestors, James and Martha [MILLER] HOLMES, lived in the Jane Furnace area of Botetourt co., VA c1840. Later, they lived in the Covington, VA area. Their daughter, Mary, is my g-grandmother. Mary m: 1) Robert SIMMS; 2) David C. HILL, both in Botetourt county. At the end of the civil war, Martha Holmes came to the Ritchie County, VA[WV] area with her daughters, Mary Holmes SIMMS HILL & husband, David, and Martha HOLMES BECKNER & her husband, Allen, along with all the grandchildren. James HOLMES did not come "over the mountains" with the family. Questions: Who were James HOLMES' parents? Did James serve in the Civil War? where did he die? where buried? What was Martha [?] HOLMES' maiden name? who were her people? Marilyn [email protected]
Dear Old Freds. Thank all of you who sent me definitions. I knew I could count of this group of interested experts. You are all great. Hava a good day. Sincerely, Sandy
Dear Old Fred's. Can anyone tell me the definition of the term "inmate" as pertains to a persons place in society in the 1600s. It would be used like the term "yeoman". For that matter what does the term Yeoman mean? Thanks. Sandy
Not just a farmer but one who cultivates his own land. A class of freeholders below the gentry-English. But obviously not the lowest class. The following appears in the Jan.-Feb. 1999 issue of The Library of Virginia Newsletter. If anyone goes to the library to see it, please let the list know. I thought that this might be helpful to some on the list. BUSHMAN COLLECTION IS A BOON TO VALLEY GENEALOGISTS "Katherine Gentry Bushman was a professional genealogist, author and local historian, as well as a charter member of the Augusta Co. Historical Society.......She was also past regent of the Thomas Hughart Chapter of the VA D.A.R. She died in 1997. Now her genealogical research files are available at the Library of Virginia. The collection includes family research files ,subject files, compilations and oversize genealogical chars and maps. The majority of the collection is family research files including correspondence with clients for whom Bushman did work. Bushman abstracted genealogical notes from court records, published sources, Bible records, patriotic organization applications, census records, and genealogical charts. These materials also appear in the files. The Bushman collection is an important source of information on the Shenandoah Valley region and the Augusta County area. There is substantial information on the Alexander, Bell, Bushman, Craig, Curry, Davis, Fauber, Greaves, Hogshead, KINKEAD, McCutchan, Polk, Rankin, Robertson, Sheers, Steele , Tate and Wilson families. Processing of this collection is complete and it is ready for use." Ann Researching McCORMICK, BYRNE, TATE, VENABLE ______________________________ --------------------

Be careful about an ancestor being 105 years old.....you might have a father and son with the same name, or an uncle and a nephew. If you have found him in the 1850 Boone Co Kentucky census and the age checks.....then you are okay. I only caution you because I have seen people with an ancestor 120 years old......really a father and a son. I have one that was around 100 years old when he died, so some of those ole birds did live a long time. We were lucky to find him in 1840 census in the 90-100 age bracket and he died before the 1850 census, so he might have seen his 100th birthday. I have tried to check newspaper accounts for that time - thinking something would have been written about a man who reached his 100th birthday, but no luck yet. As I said, if you have checked the census and his age checks, then congrats on a 105 year old ancestor. Mary [email protected]

Polly was a common nickname ... from Mary to Paula to Paulette, to Paloma .... Joan Schmidt
Polly was commonly used for Mary, sometimes Sarah, and once in a while Margaret. I am looking for information about the Connell family. Some sources place them in the northern Shenandoah valley in the late 1730s. I have gone through a number of sources at Handley and can't find any mention of them here, however, Pennyslvania has them founding a town up there (Connellsville) and lists them from this area! Several sources my father has found mention the "Connell farm, north of Winchester and west of the pike". Anyone have any information on this?
Mary was the real name, "Polly" was the nickname...the nickname for Margaret was "Peggy" and the nickname for Sarah was "Sally".....hope this helps! Hi, I am new to the list, I am looking for anyone that is researching the Shaver/Shavour line. I have a John Shaver born 145/46 Germany, he married Elizabeth Pence on July 19, 1784 in Shenandoah County, Va. He died in 1851 in Boone County, Ky. I think he might have been a Mennonite or Baptist. I went to school with two girls whose nickname was Polly. In both instances their actual first name was Paulette.
