Hi Everyone........ :-) Tonight, I found just a hint of a possibility that my Ferguson line may have been in Frederick County, VA in the late 1700's (from about the 1760's on). Is there by chance anyone on this list that would have any information of the Ferguson's in the area at that time?..........Looking for information on a Father--Charles Ferguson that married either a Mary Kinchloe or a Rachel Massie........and his Son-- Isaac Ferguson that married a Susan(Sally) Haines (Her parents were Simeon Haines and Hannah Wolfe). Also, do know for sure that the family was of Quaker heritage. Any help on this Ferguson (Furguson) line would be most dearly appreciated by myself and great many others I have met on the net in the past few weeks..... :-) Rinda Lynn Ferguson -- Highland County, OH

Hi all. I am researching my maternal line. My mother, Louise Virginia Gordon, was born in the Stephens City VA area. Her father was Edward Upton Gordon, her mother Hattie Ruth Cooley. While I have birth dates for several generations back, I find that I have no information on anyone other than direct line ancestors ... no cousins, etc. Can anyone give me any information on which way to start looking for this? Hello, Tavenore Beall is listed in the index of the book "Pioneers of Old Frederick Co. VA" by O'Dell. Check the Frederick Co. archives for VA Minute Book Aug. 1767 pg. 7 If you write to the clerk of court of Fred. Co., you can obtain a photocopy of this page. T. Beall along with others was appointed by the Fred. Co. Court to determine the dower rights of Sarah Denton O'Dell. There are other Bealls listed in Cecil O'Dell's book. Happy searching, Ann McCORMICK/McCORMACK, TATE, BYRNE, RANKIN, McFARREN/McFERREN OF N.Ireland and Old Frederick Co. VA

The Virginia Historical Magazine, Vol. 10, Page 46, in an article entitled The Germans of the Valley, speaks of a meeting at Woodstock on June 16, 1774. Among other things, a Committee of Safety and Correspondence was appointed for the County. The committee consisted of Rev. Peter Muhlenberg, Chmn, Francis Slaughetr, Abraham Bird, Tavener Beale ( father of the undersigned ), John Tipton and Abraham Bowman. Does anyone know the name of the Beale who was a signer ? Can anyone tell me more about this Tavener Beale who was a Colonel in the VA militia and who was married to Elizabeth Hite. Thanks in advance Don Rielly
Will someone please help me with a little history of some VA counties 1. When was OLD FREDERICK COUNTY founded and what was it's geographic extent ? 2. Is OLD FREDERICK a precursor of modern SHENANDOAH COUNTY ? If so, when was SHENANDOAH founded ? 3. There was, apparently, a BERKELEY COUNTY, VA.. How does it fit into the picture. Is it present day BERKELEY COUNTY, W. VA. ? Thanks very much to any kind soul who will shed some light on these matters. Don Rielly
Flo and Linda and all, The following is some info I have typed up (using MSWORKS) out of the Hiatt-Hiett family Genealogy, concerning the Hiatt and Largent family. I am a descendant of John Hiatt and Margaret Stephens Edwards Hiatt through there daughter Sarah, who married George Locke. Sarah and George were my 3rd great grandparents. The Hiatt book is about 1000 pages, so there is a lot of information. Everett Locke The following is an excerpt from page 44 and 45 of The Hiatt-Hiett Genealogy and Family History by William Perry Johnson written in about 1951. This article was written to Mr. Johnson by Mr. Roger Avery Stubbs of Long Lake, Minnesota who was a great great great grandson of Margaret Largent, daughter of James and Margaret Largent. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx John Hiatt in his will, 1764, names wife Margaret, and the following children (in this order): George-"eldest son", John, William, Joseph, Catherine Harrel, Mary Edwards, Ann Harris, Margaret Craven, Evan, Jonathan, James, Timothy, Martha Hiatt, Ruth Hiatt, and Sarah Hiatt---fifteen children in all. A Deed on record in Winchester, Frederick Co., Va. (Deed Book 12, p. 646), shows that by 4 April 1767 Margaret, widow of John Hiatt, had married to James Largent of Hampshire Co., Va. The will of James Largent was dated 14 May 1810, and proven 19 April 1813, at Romney, the county seat of Hampshire Co., Va.(now W. Va) . He names wife Margery; son John--land coveyed by Enoch and Henry Enoch and James Slane; daughter Mary Slane (husband Hugh), note of James Slane given her, returned to him ; daughter Margrate. Exec., son, John, and friend John Hiet. Sec., George Sharp and Francis White. Wit., Francis, Robert N., and Sam P. white. (This John Hiet is a grandson of John and Margaret Hiatt-editor) "In 1942 Mr. Stubbs wrote: "I just received a pack of old genealogical data---musty and dusty ---which I just returned to W. Va. after spending four hours copying it. Mostly Largent data but much of interest to you." This new data discloses that John and Margaret Hiatt had a posthumous child, a daughter Phebe. Mr. Stubbs continues: "Phebe Hiett was daughter of John and Margaret Hiett but as she is not mentioned in will must have been born after he died or at least after he made the will." In speaking of Margaret, wife of John Hiatt, he writes:"Margaret, supposedly Stephens, married first to ______ Edwards, and had three children: Thomas; Nancy, married Hugh McIver, (moved to Greenbrier, river-had four daughters. Indians killed Hugh, captured Nancy--for years--she escaped but the children remained with the Indians always.); a daughter, married first _________ Dier, second _______ Craven, third Lenahan. Margaret (Stephens?) Edwards married secondly to John Hiett of Jefferson Co., a.,( now W. Va. ----editor.) he had three sons and four daughters. Right order of sons: Evan, married Sarah Smith and had five sons and six daughters; James, married _____ Pugh, and moved to Marietta (Washington Co., Ohio -- editor); Timothy, died single. Right order of daughters birth: a daughter (Ruth), married first Alexander Frier, second to _(James Shirley; a daughter (Martha) married David Caudy; a dau. m. ____ Pugh; Phebe m. John Slane. Margaret married thirdly to James Largent, and had: John, married Sarah Critton; Mary, married Hugh Slane; and Margaret, married James Slane. There is an old pioneer story in these papers about old John Hiett (above) --"Scouts brot news that there was a body of Indians coming toward the fort on Capon and Hiett gathered up his family and started in the night. He took the quinzy and died that winter.....etc." A note following the above record of the marriage of Phebe Hiatt to John Slane states: "and a grandson (I do not know his name) wrote this up." In a subsequent letter, Mr. Stubbs writes: "I do not know the author of the statement about John Hietts quinzy. The story was on a yellowed large sheet apparently taken from an account book as page 217-218 was printed in the upper corner. It was in the papers of the estate of ...Lewis Largent (b.1838; and who is written up in Miller and Maxwells West Virginia and Its People, II, 376 (pub1913)). The foregoing account of the children of Margaret (Stephens?) by each of her three husbands, since written by a grandson of John and Phebe (Hiatt) Slane and thus a great grandson of John and Margaret Hiatt, is of extreme interest and value. There is no doubt but what it is authentic and reliable, and there is further assurance from the fact that Lewis Largent, among whose papers these data were found, was himself a great grandson of Margaret through her third husband James Largent. Lewis Largent b. 1838 was a son of Jsoseph and Mary (Largent)Largent, and a grandson of Lewis and _____ (Parrish) Largent, and through his mother , a grandson of John and Sarah (Critton) Largent. The paternal great grandfather of Lewis Largent was John Largent, who is said to have come from France to Virginia in 1737. The maternal great grandfather was the James Largent who married Margaret (Stephens?) (Edwards) Hiatt, widow of John Hiatt, James being a son of John Largent; the immigrant. It is a tradition in another branch of the Largent family that their ancestor, James Largent, married first to Margaret Stephans , and secondly to _____ Hiett. From a careful study of the records, however, it appears that James Largent was married but once, the mother of his three children being Margaret (Stephens?) (Edwards) (Hiatt) Largent. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 24, 1999 9:38 AM Subject: LARGENT > > Linda and All, > > My husband is related the the SLANEs. Hi-- Someone recently asked if Fredericksburg was in Old Frederick Co. in the mid-1700s. I must have missed any reply, because I, too, am interested to know where it was. In a biographical sketch in an old Champaign Co., IL, history, it mentioned that my ancestor had gone to Fredericksburg in Albemarle Co., but I've never known for sure if that was correct. I'll appreciate another reply to this question. Lillian Stevenson in Oregon
