Trying to find my CHAMPION's in Frederick and Berkeley Counties and find they are involved with the STEPHENSON and RAWLINGS families...anybody have any information that might help me.....land records, marriages, etc? Thanks so much...Jan Time period is 1754 onward...by 1790's they were in Washington County, KY and on West to Crawford County, Indiana and Knox County, Illinois.. -
Hi Jack, I saw your post with a reference from the "History of the Lower Shenandoah Valley..." and I was hoping you would do a lookup for me. I believe my ancestor Jacob Wollam (Woolam) was born in Allen Dist., Berkeley Co. about 1792. His father, Balzer (Balthassar) Wollam (b. abt. 1745, d. abt. 1823) was probably born in PA, but lived in Sleepy Creek, Berkeley County and was very active in real estate transactions there. I would very much appreciate any info that might help point me in the right direction in learning about these guys. Thanks so much for your time, Terry
John: Have you seen the index for Old Chapel Cemetery: There are three that I know of: (1) "Old Chapel" Clarke County, Virginia, copyright 1906 by Charles Randolph Hughes, printed by The Blue Ridge Press, Berryville, VA; (2) "Old Chapel Cemetery" Boyce Virginia, Index of Graves, 1976 by Burwell Cemetery Association, Inc. This index is contained in the "Proceedings of The Clarke County Historical Association Bi-Centennial issue", Volume XVIII, 1976; and (3) "Biographical and Genealogical Record of Persons Buried at Old Chapel" by Stuart E. Brown, Jr., Lorraine F. Myers and Eileen M. Chappel, Volume II, annals of Clarke County, VA, copyright 1987, Virginia Book Company, Berryville, VA. In the book "History of the Lower Shenandoah Valley counties of Frederick, Berkeley, Jefferson and Clarke" originally published 1890 by A. Warner & Co., Publishers, Chicago, IL. This book was updated with an index in 1972 and copyright by the Virginia Book Company, Berryville, VA. There is a John L. CARTER mentioned on page 626 of this book. "WILLIAM ARTHUR CARTER, deceased, was born on Opequon Creek in 1799 and died in 1857, his birthploace being about four miles from Winchester. He was a son of Arthur Carter, who lived at same place during life and died in 1846. He was engaged in farming and in the manufacture of paper and woolen goods. He commenced life in limited circumstances, but in time acquired a fine farm, a woolen mill and a paper manufactory; also owned a number of slaves in his time. He married Mary Kerfoot, who died in 1821, and to that union there were twelve children. He subsequently married Widow Ruth Noble, nee BERRYHILL, who died in 1852 without issue. Our subject, W. A. CARTER, married in 1824 Sarah C. Beeler, daughter of Col. Benjamin Beeler, of Jefferson copunty, W. Va., and to this marriage were born William A.; Mary E., who married and went to Missouri and died there; and Mary E. (two by same name) the only one now living. She is the widow of James T. Milton, living in Chicago, Ill. Subject's first wife having died, he married, in 1836, Mary C., daughter of Lawrence Pittman, of Shenandoah county, Va., and their children were John L. (dead), Robert K. (living in New York City), Joseph M. (living in North Carolina), Charles, Berryhill M. (married in 1876 to Mary Gray Caldwell, of fredericksburg, Va.), and George H., born April 13 1850, and married in 1881 to Eva Carroll, daughter of Charles M. Castleman, of Clarke county, whose children are Anna Lee, Alice Mary (dead), Walter C., Eva West and Edith C. The only daughter of subject, Anna L., is dead. Mr. Carter, at his death, owned about 1,300 acres of land, known as the Carter estate, which suffered heavily during the war, the heirs lsoing everything except Carter Hall and the land. The estate was divided among eight heirs, two of whom now own and farm their part: George H. and Berryhill M. He was a member of the Baptist Church for a number of years." Don't know if this is your John L. or not. Happy hunting. Jack R. Hi Betty In a message dated 5/28/99 6:23:06 PM, you wrote: I don't know if you have seen this book or not. The following names are in the index of "Pioneers of Old Frederick Co. VA" by O'Dell >ELIZABETH was first married to a COFFMAN and had sons ISAAC, CHRISTOPHER >and JACOB. Elizabeth's first husband was David Coffman. Sarah and Elizabeth Shepard are mentioned but not Ruanna. There are Clarks and Clarkes in the index. I am not related to your families, but I checked the index of O'Dell's book. Good luck, Ann
Has anyone ever heard of Fairfax Milton Hickman? He was born in 1810 in Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA. He married Mary Ann Davenport in 1833. He also died in 1833 in Belmont Co., OH. His parents were William Hickman and Rebecca Harris. Haven't been able to find them either. Help! They are a major brick wall. I am looking for information on Joseph Dunn who married Lucy L. Stimmel 7 Sept 1827 in Frederick Co, VA. According to his tombstone (in Farmington, IL) he was born on 11 June 1804, according to the census in Virginia. Lucy Stimmel is the daughter of Abraham and Ann Maria Stimmel living in White Hall (Apple Pie Ridge) which is north of Winchester in Frederick County. Lucy's parents had both immigrated from Germany and lived in Frederick Co Maryland for several years before coming to Virginia. They remained in White Hall until they died: Abraham in 1848 and Ann Maria in 1866. Both are buried in Lower Ridge Graveyard in White Hall. Joseph and Lucy left Virginia soon after they were married and lived in Ohio then Illinois. Their marriage was performed by George M. Frye and their bondsman was Thomas Hancher. George Frye was the brother of Christopher Frye and Michael all three were ministers. Any information that could be a clue to my search would be appreciated.
I am trying to find the parents of ELIZABETH CLARKE COFFMAN VEACH. I believe she was born in the Old Frederick Co area. In 1787 she married WILLIAM VEACH and they lived in Mercer Co KY. A court case of 1798 in Fayette listed her as the heir of THOMAS CLARKE and also listed SARAH SHEPHERD, wife of WILLIAM SHEPHERD, and daughters SARAH,ELIZABETH, and ROANNA as heirs. I have seen a WILLIAM SHEPHERD with wife MARY and daughters SARAH, ELIZABETH and RUANNA. This could be the same family. ELIZABETH was first married to a COFFMAN and had sons ISAAC, CHRISTOPHER and JACOB. THOMAS CLARKE was mentioned in several court depositions as having gone to KY with George Rogers Clarke, William Linn, Thomas Brashear, and others in 1775 to stake out land claims. If any of these names appear familiar I would appreciate some help. Betty Silfies

I am trying to find the home and family of Eli Clark, born in 1814. LDS shows an Eli born in Hopewell, Frederick Co. Virginia Feb. 22, 1814. I cannot find a Hopewell town, would it be a township or district? Do any of you Clark(e) researchers have an Eli as the sibling of your ancestor? There is a possibility that he could be Elijah, Elisha, Elim! If you have any of these, or info about Hopewell, please let me know. Many thanks! Carolyn (Anderson) Clark in central Ohio. He moved to Westmoreland County, PA in the early 1840s, I have searched the MD census records for that period but can't find any Claspys. I have, however, found some in the area of Harper's Ferry between 1820 and 1860, but he doesn't fit the pre-1850 data. It's my perception that the state boundaries around Harper's Ferry may have been a bit fuzzy during the first half of the 19th century and before. Since many German speaking people lived in the Shenandoah Valley at the time, not surprizing to find that some of the prisoners chose to stay in America.
