I have several references to a Samuel CARTER/Ann CHAMBERS marriage, and their children. I don't have a marriage date or name of bondsman though. 1. The property tax list for Frederick Co. 1787, lists both Samuel and Thomas, his brother, living close to each other or the land they paid taxes on was adjoining or nearby, although we know Thomas was living in North Florida by that time. Since Thomas and wife, Mary Chambers, did not sell Mary's inheritance (land in Fred. Co. -0 see Deed Bk. 21, pp 741-43) until the year 1787, they probably owed tax on the property for at least part of that year, thus the listing. However, Samuel and Ann may have remained in Virginia, although corroborating evidence has not been found at this time; however, Samuel and Ann do NOT appear in the records of South Carolina and North Florida. Two children are named in William Chambers' will:" 3. "History of the Lower Shenandoah Valley" Counties of Frederick, Berkeley, Jefferson and Clarke. Edited by J. E. Norris. Chicago, Illinois: A. The father of this lady, Joseph Chambers Carter, a descendant of one of William Penn's party, was born in Frederick county, Va., about three miles west of Winchester, near the Round Hill. He married Elizabeth Lupton, daughte rof John and Ann Lupton, from Bucks county, Penn. Her father died in 1855 at the age of seventy-five years, and her mother in 1853, at the age of seventy-three years. To them were born four children: Lydia Ann, Sarah Elizabeth, Mary margaret (who died in infancy) and Joshua Lupton (who died in October, 1887, at the age of sixty-four years). The father of Miss Carter was the son of Samuel and Ann Carter, nee Chambers, of Frederick county, and whilst her maternal grandfather was a native of Bucks county, Penn., his wife was the daughter of Lewis and Lydia Neill, nee Hollingsworth, and born in this county. While not an active member, the sympathies of Miss Carter are with the Society of Friends." Hope this helps. Jack R. Jim, I checked both Va. & W.Va. for your locations. I did not locate a Mecklinburg, but I did locate a small settlement, Mecklenburg Wayside, in Mecklenburg Co., southern Va. It is on U.S.1, just a few miles SW of South Hill. I found a Sleepy Creek in northern Morgan Co., W.Va., near the Potomac River. Elaine

Looking for information on my great great grandfather George Huse Shiner, b. Winchester 20 June 1797. He married Rachel Curlet Pierce and they moved west. His parents died and their names are unknown. He and his sister Cynthia were raised by their maternal grandmother Sarah Gibbons Lister. Does anyone know anything about the Shiners at that period? Thanks so much. S. Larsen [email protected] inc.com.

Hi All I'm new to this county and list. My searches have revealed that my CALDWELL family was in the area during the mid 1700s. I'm particularly interested in Alexander CALDWELL of Mecklinburg and Sleepy Creek, his sons Robert, William and John. They seem to have moved on west by the 1790s. Andrew CALDWELL is a possible relative. Any CALDWELL researchers out there? Another question: I'm not finding Mecklinburg on my maps. Where is/was it? Would like to correspond with others researching HEMPSTEAD. A Margaret Nelson wed a Hal(l)um Hempstead. I know her to be the dau. of a James Nelson and Susan Keiter of Frederick Co., VA - Hampshire Co., (W)VA. In 1888, bro Warner W. Nelson wrote in his will that his sister Margaret Hempstead should be cared for as long as she remained there, etc... The will was probated in 1890 in Hampshire Co., WV Have been unsucccessful in finding the Hempstead name in Hampshire Co.. I believe WW Nelson owned property in what would be considered Frederick Co., VA - so maybe I've looked in the wrong places! TIA, Karen Nelson Hangsleben

I am looking for info about JACOB BARRETT, youngest son of Arthur and Lydia Chambers Barrett, who was b. 1 April 1730 in Frederick Co. The Barretts were the first Quaker settlers along Apple Pie Ridge. I know the names of Jacob's children but not his wife nor his whereabouts when he died (SC?). Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Nancy Kipp Nancy Kipp [email protected] Nye Elementary School http://nye.sandi.net ,
Hi Everyone, The following excerpt from a Jefferson County history may help clear up the question of the Hopewell (Bullskin) Meeting of the Donegal Presbytery. Bushong, M.K.1941. A History of Jefferson County West Virginia. Jefferson Publishing Co., Charles Town, West Virginia. p. 19 - The Potomoke Presbyterian Church has already been treated in connection with early settlements in Jefferson County. In 1740, or perhaps a year or two earlier, members of that denomination erected a building at the headspring of Bullskin Run, near Summit Point. However, it was not until November 25, 1771, that the land was deeded by David Castleman and wife to Isaac Larew, John Riley, John Oliver, George Hampton, William Rankin, and William McCormick, trustees. Although the house of worship was commonly known as the Bullskin Church, its ecclesiastical name was Hopewell. The latter name appears in the records of the Presbytery of Donegal as early as April 2, 1740, and is frequently mentioned thereafter...The Bullskin, or Hopewell, congregation continued to meet at Summit Point until about 1800. By that time the building had fallen into decay and it was decided to worship in the new union church at Smithfield, the title to which was held by the Lutherans. After April 24, 1819, the Hopewell name was changed to Smithfield. Services were continued until April 19, 1933, when the membership became so small that the Winchester Presbytery dissolved the church. This may clarify some of the confusion on the use of the name Hopewell. Ken McCormick
Hello list, Calling all Byrne researchers! <grin> I am searching for the family of James Byrne/Byrn who married Jean McCormick. Who were his parents? Did James Byrne/Byrn have a sister named Ann? Thanks for your response, Ann
The following is quoted from page 50 of "Hopewell Friends History": "The name Hopewell was adopted by the Friends on Opeckon, it is most likely, from Hopewell in Lancaster County, Pa., from which place many of the early Friends came to Virginia. See "The Jolliffe Family of Virginia," by William Jolliffe, 1893, page 182. At first this meeting was usually called Opeckon (Opeckan, Opequon, etc.) because of it slocation, which is about four miles northwest of Opeckon Creek, or River. The majority of Friends' meetings were named for streams or other natural features of the localities in which they were situated." :-) Jack R.
