    3. There are also a lot of Shinn's around Concord, North Carolina. Don't know where they originated - my family married into them, but I have done no research. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kay or Darrell Groves" <kdwgroves@yahoo.com> To: <OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 19, 2003 10:46 PM Subject: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Was the name ever shortened to Shinn? > > The Shinn surname is quite common in Central WV. > remarksk <kskramer@wcoil.com> wrote:Would anyone have any history of the early > settlers of Back Creek VA. 2. Karen Hangsleben
    3. New subscriber and I'm hoping others in this area reseaching will check their book shelves or files for marriages in the counties of interest. It was Wednesday, January 18, 1832 when Hannah ANDERSON wed John Richad NELSON. The bride age sixteen was the daughter of Peter and Hannah BOACHT ANDERSON of Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. I have found no record of their marriage in Winchester or Frederick Co., VA. I'm thinking that because of her age they may have eloped to Maryland where there was no waiting. Right? I have my fingers crossed that they didn't wed in Hampshire Co., VA where marriage records have been lost bet 1824-the Civil War. Thanks in advance for looking and replying. Karen Nelson Hangsleben

    1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] HOLMES CONNECTION
    2. Hi, There have been a number of questions concerning the Licking County, Ohio connections to Frederick County, Virginia. I will try to address them as soon as I can; however, I found this entry in the "Birth Registry Frederick County, Virginia" RITTER, Greenberry, born on 20 Dec 1853, parents Isaac H. & Amanda Ritter, Farmer in HOLMES GROVE; Page 10, Line 110. Isaac Henry Ritter's father was Adam Ritter Amanda Ritter was the daughter of Phillip Grandstaff-Bischoff and Mary "Polly" Cooper. This is more evidence of the HOLMES family from St Louisville, Newton Twp., Licking County, Ohio being in the same neighborhood with the RITTER/RUTTER family of Frederick County, Virginia. James Holmes listed as a general store operator and Stephen Ritter listed as an early hotel-tavern keeper in the "150th Anniversary of the Founding of The Village of St. Louisville" 1839. Other Frederick County, VA names included are Koontz, Neighbarger, Booher, Evans, Coffman, O'Bannon, Vance, Oldaker, Jones, Huffman, Smoots but not limited to just those names. Chocy

    3. I am searching for any information on the Crouse, Krouse, Krause, Beatty, Beaty families who lived in or around Old Frederick Co. VA early 1700's to mid 1800's. Am trying to find parents of a Robert Beatty (Beaty) b ca 1796-1801) and Jane Crouse (Krouse) and Michael Crouse (Krouse). Jane was born ca 1813 and married Robert Beatty in 1831 in Frederick Co. VA. I know there were Krouse (Crouse) families living in the area in the 1700's. Am trying to find which one or ones Jane and Michael are descended from. The same for Robert Beatty. Robert and Jane later lived near Middletown, VA. Some of their children lived in Reliance, Middletown, Front Royal, Stephens City, and Strasburg. Both Jane and Robert are buried in the Riding's Chapel Cemetery. I found a marriage record for a Michael Crouse (Krouse) and Elizabeth Sherf (Shert) in 1818, Frederick Co. VA, but have not found any more on them after that. . Any information at all would be appreciated. Am willing to share the information that I do have. Thanks . . Sharon Wilcox wilcoxphoto@dmci.net

    1. Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] NAIN, FREDERICK CO., VIRGINIA
    2. I am currently reading a book I picked up at a yard sale called THE FRONTIERSMEN by Allan W. Eckert. The book is stated as "fact, not fiction," and start around 1755 in Fauquier Co. Then goes to Kentucky. It is very interesting and provides a background for what times were like in those areas. It is well documented and lists lots of sources. Real names are used and a lot of material comes from diaries of the time. I am about 3/4 the way through and read every minute I can sneak in. I think it is a great source for anyone searching that area in that time period. I have not looked but it is probably on Amazon.com or ebay for a used price. It was first printed in 1967. If you like history and want to know how they got from here to there this will answer a lot of those questions. Coral in California

    2. Hi Hal, As far as I know, at this point of my study of old Frederick County, VA, I am not related to most of the families I have posted. Actually, I am looking for all the relatives of Stephen A and Mary "Polly" RUTTER/RITTER that I can find; however, once in a while its nice to share information I have concerning some subjects that come up on our list. I believe it started with the GLOVER family who I believe from the information that was posted on our list went to St. Louisville, Newton Twp., Licking County, Ohio in the late 1830's via West Virginia probably taking other families consisting of relatives and friends as they seem to have lived in the same neighborhood in Frederick County, VA.
