    1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Who really is John Thrash/Thrush II's father?
    2. Robert M Brady
    3. First, I wasn't quite sure how to do this, so I have to use a shotgun blast approach. Instead of emailing each list seperately, it is being emailed all at once. I apologize if you received multiple copies. After reading this, I welcome any and all feedback you may have concerning this issue. Being THRASH/THRUSH descendants, my father and I have been intensely involved in trying to establish with certainty the correct lineage of John Thrash II. Based on our research and an analysis of all pertinent information found in various places and sources, there seems to be a discrepancy concerning who really is John Thrash/Thrush II's father. It is posted below and at our family website at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bradytrilogy/download/Thrash-Origins.htm , where we have taken all of our notes and transcribed all of my grandparents' research of our family roots. KINFOLK also covers the surnames of: BRADY | THRASH | KNAGGS | ROW | HENDERSON | CRISLIP | MATHEWS | SQUIRES | LOBBAN | UMSTOTT | WARE | WINGFIELD | COPELAND | LEMMON | VIQUESNEY | SHOMO | and others as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Secondly, I invite all of you to view our site as the site has a lot of information, history, photos, copies of transcribed legal documents, as well as the historical autobiographies of my grandparents' entire lives spent growing up in the "hills n' hollars" of WV. I have affectionately entitled it "The Brady Trilogy". The Brady Trilogy - http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bradytrilogy For those who have ties to the area surrounding Rich Mountain and the town of Junior, WV., my grandfather, the late Rev. Troy Robert Brady, wrote a colorful article titled "From Rowtown to Junior" that vividly describes life in that area during the earliest part of this century. It was published in GOLDENSEAL magazine in 1984. It is also included as part of "Pop Troy's Anthology" at the website. The accounts by my grandmother, the late Elizabeth Thrash Brady, show an insight to the areas of Creston, the Little Kanawha River, Elizabeth, Bakers Run, etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK - HERE IS THE SUMMARY RAISING THE QUESTIONS CONCERNING JOHN THRASH II - Thrash Origins: Recent research by Robert M. Brady and analysis by Howard Brady has confirmed Elizabeth Thrash Brady's conclusion that our Thrash family has the same origins as the Thrush family of southeastern Pennsylvania and of Hampshire and Mineral Counties in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. The original German name was, variably, Dreish, Freish, or Reisch. Two sources say the family immigrated from Switzerland, but other records have the family immigrating from Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany in 1750. (Darmstadt is a few miles south of Frankfurt). It is possible the family originated in Switzerland, but then moved to Darmstadt, before emigrating to America. The genealogy records of Mary L. Thrush Markley (written in 1944) were posted on the web by a Donald Thrush, now deceased, at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/h/r/donald--p-thrush/index.html This record indicates that five adults immigrated from Darmstadt to America in 1750, and settled in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania. Dates are for immigrant qualification by pledging oath of allegiance to the British crown: J. J. O. Dreish Aug. 15, 1750 J. Jacob Freisch Aug. 24, 1750 J. Leon Reisch Aug. 24, 1750 Joh. Conrad Reisch Aug. 31, 1750 Jacob Frasch Sept. 29, 1750 Apparently, in spite of the variable spelling, these people were closely related, and the name "Thrush" was soon adopted. Tradition states that they were cousins and brothers. J. Jacob Freish became Jacob Thrush in subsequent records, and J. Leon Reisch became Leonard Thrush. Apparently Jacob (b. 1712) was the father of Leonard (b. 1733). Leonard was old enough at the time of emigration to take the oath of allegiance; the other children of John Jacob were not. Based on information submitted by Donald Thrush, a tree posted at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=thrush4&id=I06 for this family includes a John Thrush II: JOH. JACOB (FREISCH) THRUSH b: 1712 2 LEONARD (FREISCH) THRUSH b: 1733 2 JACOB (FREISCH) THRUSH b: 1742 2 PETER (FREISCH) THRUSH b: 1745 2 RICHARD (FREISCH) THRUSH 2 JOHN (FREISCH) THRUSH II + MARGRET MILLER 3 SUSAN THRUSH + JOHN GREENFIELD 3 MICHAEL THRUSH b: 1798 d: 18 APR 1859 + CATHRINE UMSTOTT 3 RICHARD THRUSH b: 28 SEP 1800 d: 5 MAY 1887 + FRANCIS ROGERS b: 26 OCT 1810 d: 5 MAY 1868 *** 3 MARGRET THRUSH b. 1807 d 1889 + GEORGE BANE Although this tree does not include John III, it overlaps and confirms the records given by Elizabeth T. Brady in Kinfolk. Both sources state that John II married Margret/Margaret Miller, and web references and our documents confirm that she came from Philadelphia. If the combined information from two sources is correct, John II/Margaret had the following children: Susan (m. Greenfield) [ed. Greenwalt?] Michael b. 1798 m. Catherine Umstott b.1802 Richard b. 1800 m. Francis Rogers John III b. 1802 m. Rachel Umstott b. 1808 Mary Ann b. 1805 m. Staggs Margret b. 1807 m George Bane (Another reference, given later, also lists a Nancy Catherine born in 1812.) Although the information from Donald Thrush does not include John III, the census records for Hampshire County in 1830 indicate no people named Thrush, but four Thrash Households, headed by: John Thrash Michael Thrash Richard Thrash. John Thrash Jr. This same Hampshire census also shows five families with the last name of Umpstott, which provided spouses for Michael Thrash (m. Catherine) and John Thrash (m. Rachel). Our records suggested that Samuel Umstott was Rachel's father, but other sources suggest that Samuel was her brother, and that her father was Jacob. It is more likely that Samuel was her brother since his given birthdate was in 1799, and Rachel was born in 1808. This is somewhat confirmed by the recorded family tree at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mdmalone/Surname%20Pages/umstot.htm. This family name is spelled in many different ways, such as "Umstadt" in the 1840 census. Additional variants are given in Kinfolk. The section of Hampshire County where these families lived later became Mineral County, WV. It is unfortunate that U.S. census records include only the name of the head of each family before 1850. We are confident that John Thrash (Sr.) in the Hampshire 1830 census is the same as John Thrush II, in both the Thrush family records and in Kinfolk, and, of course, John Jr. is the same person as we've been identifying as John III. It still leaves open the question of the parentage of the person we've been identifying as John II. In the 1840 Census of Hampshire County, the first three Thrash households are still present, but John Jr. is missing. However, a John Thrash does show up in the Harrison County census in 1840, It is virtually certain that this is the same person as John Jr. in the 1830 Hampshire census. It is also virtually certain that he was living in a section that was split from Harrison County in 1843 to form the western part of Barbour County. In the 1850 Barbour census, John Thrash is listed with his wife Rachel and children with names that match our family records, as given in Kinfolk. Another problem in these early records is conflict in the assumptions about in the parentage of John II. Kinfolk sources list the children of John I as: Martin R. Barney [prob. Barnabas] Richard Daughter [Susan?] (m. Greenwalt) Daughter (m. Fry) Daughter (m. Andrew Foor) (This should probably be Andrew Foose, based on other records) John II John II was said to be the youngest son, and the only son born in America. The record suggests that he emigrated to America with three sons, and the daughters were also born in America. However, this list of siblings does not match the information given by Donald Thrush for sons of John Jacob Thrush (i.e. Leonard 1733, Jacob 1742, Peter 1745, Richard and John.) Another listing of persons named John Thrush is at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=:2028354&surname=THRUSH%2C+John THRUSH, John b: 1712 in Switzerland d: 1782 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania THRUSH, John b: 1768 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania d: 1848 in Hampshire County, Virginia The 1768 birth date of John II fits reasonably with the birth dates of his children (1798-1812). The place and date of his death also are supported by census records, i.e. he appears in the 1840 census of Hampshire County, but not in the 1850 census. However, if John II is the child of John Jacob Thrush 1712, then John Jacob I would have been about 56 years old at the time of John II's birth. His oldest brother would be 35 years older than John II. This is possible, of course. John II had children born over a 34 year range, by two successive wives. However, the age gap reduces the odds that John 1768 is the son of John Jacob 1712. Several given names are used repeatedly within the family, which can be very confusing for researchers. For example, Leonard 1733 has children named Barnabas, Richard, Martin, and Susannah, which fits, more or less, with Elizabeth's list of John II's siblings. However, Leonard's children also include David, Peter, Cathrine, Rosanna, Jacob and Leonard (II). Leonard II, who was apparently the youngest, was born in 1760. And no child named John or Johannes is listed in the rather exhaustive records for Leonard 1733. The frequent use of the same given names (e.g. Richard, Michael, Barnabas, Martin, Jacob, Catherine, Susan/Susannah), in both our and Donald Thrush's records confirms that we are, beyond any doubt, related to one of the families that emigrated in 1750. Within the genealogy given by Donald Thrush, there are also marriage links to the Fry and Umstott families, which are also mentioned in Kinfolk. However, the mismatch in the two siblings lists suggests that there is an error in either the genealogy given by the Thrush family, or that given by Elizabeth. Further, the mismatch between the birth date of John II (1768) and the known birth dates for other children of John Jacob (i.e. 1733, 1742, 1745) suggests that the Error may be in Donald's materials, rather than in Kinfolk. In addition, if we were to assume Donald's records are correct, we must throw out Elizabeth's list of siblings for John II. Since this list has several given names that show up repeatedly in the Thrush genealogy given by Donald, it is likely to be valid. The extensive records of Donald Thrush deal primarily with the descendants of Leonard Thrush 1733, and Peter Thrush 1791, and they seem to be complete. We apparently are not descended in either of these lines. That leaves other possibilities: a.. John II 1768 may be the child of one of the other original five immigrants, most likely either J. J. O. Dreish, or Joh. Conrad Reisch, if we assume that the John Thrush who married Margaret Miller had a father also named John, making him John Thrush II, or a.. Or John II may a grandchild of John Jacob, either through Jacob 1742, Peter 1745 or Richard (birth year not known). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please send any comments or feedback you may have. 3. Katie, Thanks for your reply and there is no rush for you to reply again. I am corrently in Louisville, KY, but am out of town for the next couple of weeks. Are you in Lousville? Do you have any info on the children of Thomas and Eleanor Hook? Does my Nancy Hook appear as a daughter in this line? Do you know of any good sources or pictures for this family. If my sources are correct, Thomas and Eleanor moved to Lafyette Co., MO and are buried there. I was also contacted by another lister who claims descendency from Jane Hook, daughter of Thomas and Eleanor, but her history suggests that she is not aware of Jane having siblings. If our histories match I will forward info on to her as well. My history suggests that Nancy Hook was married to my ggg-father Richard J, Robinson. I have this from a jpeg of a page from a book: History of Noble County, Ohio. I can forward this to you if you would like to see it. Richard J. Robinson and children appear to have moved to Noble Co. in 1854. I am very curious, though , that Nancy does not appear in the the census record in this household for 1860 or 1870. She does not appear in these records until 1880. I believe Nancy is the mother of my gg-father, John W. Robinson. Would also like to know if she is the mother to other children of Richard J. Richard J. died in 1886, I think in Sarahsville, Noble Co., Ohio. No info on Nancy's death, but she was living with Richard in 1880 census. I would like to locate the cemetery where they are buried; also any history of there daughters: Theopolis, Frances, Margaret, and Ellen. I think John W. was there only son and I have a pretty good history of him and this line. I think I have info on Thomas Hook's line, or maybe it is Eleanor McVicker. One of these lines is traced back to Scotland through a McKee line. I'll double check this. Please get back to me when you have a chance and well exchange info. Are you around/familiar with Sarahsville, Noble Co., Ohio? I am trying to figure out where family living there in the 1800's might have been buried. I cannot seem to find community cemeteries in this town and am trying to locate where some family members would have been buried in this area. >From: Carrie Cleveland <greengit@yahoo.com> >To: Christopher Robinson <pangeaao@hotmail.com> >Subject: Re: I'm a Dilley! >Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 21:06:33 -0700 (PDT) > >James Ephraim's parents, Samuel James Dilley and >Mary Sayer, were married in Senecaville, Guernsey >County, OH in 1847. > >I am able to trace my line back to Europe, but >most of the info I have is from the Guernsey >County Dilleys. 1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Re: I'm a Dilley!
    2. Christopher Robinson
    3. Carrie, I am descended from a Dilley line. My gg-mother was Olive B. Dilley born 1848 in Geurnsey Co (now Noble Co.), Ohio. She married my gg-father, John W. Robinson, b. 1843, Hampshire Co., VA (now Hampshire Co., WV). Olive B. Dilley married John W. Robinson dec. 24, 1867. I gave most info and movements after this period, but no pictures. Olive B. Dilley's parents were James Dilley, b. VA and Rebecca Tener, b. 1928, OH. James probably had three brothers: Jonathon, Luke, and Hiram, all found in the Guernsey/Noble Co. Ohio area. Their father was Jesse Dilley, I believe of Shenendoa Co., VA. I have NOT directly connected this family to the Ephraim Dilley line found in Guernsey Co., Ohio during the 1800's, but they are listed in this compiled diary on the Dilley site. I would love to see some pictures of this family if they are in your line or obtain any info you may have. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tnoye/Ephr31-40.html (My Dilley line is found at this link pages 34-39) http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tnoye/a-Dilley.html (This is the main link to the Dilley site where you can search the entire site for Dilleys) Below is the family of Olive B. Dilley (I have not yet determined the relationship of the Neville Dilley who compiled this as he passed away in 1993, and I have been unable to make contact with his surviving relations in Louisville). Also, there in a Rollin K. Dilley buried in the Robinson family plot in Louisville. I am not certain of his relation, but believe him to be the son of George Dilley below. I have some more info on other Dilleys from this line that I have not updated. Please let me know if you are relation and have any info. Thank you, Christopher L. 3. Helen, I contacted you in the past concerning my gg-father John W. Robinson, b. 1843, Hampshire Co., VA (now WV). I now have some more info on his ancestors. His father was Richard J. Robinson, b. 1814 M. Nancy Hook, b. VA. Richard J. may have had a brother Joseph L. Robinson. Their father was possibly John T. Robinson, b. abt 1780. 3. Chris, Does any of this ROBINSON information fit with any of yours? My gg grandmother was Elizabeth ROBINSON b. abt.1814 m. James WHITE 9 Oct. 1834 in Hampshire Co. James died 1843/1844. Elizabeth WHITE ROBINSON and John ROBINSON paid $200 bond 28 Sept. 1846 for Isaac WHITE; Sarah C.WHITE; Mary E. WHITE; Luke WHITE and Virginia WHITE. Isaac WHITE is my ggrandfather and I am willing to share info about him. Unfortunately I haven't found his mother or his siblings after the 1850 census. I would expect John and Elizabeth to be siblings or related in some fashion due to the children's bond. On the 1850 Hampshire Co. census 801-801 Elizabeth WHITE, 36, VA (1814) Isaac 15, VA student (1835) Sarah C. 13 VA (1837) Mary E. 11 VA (1839) Luke 9 VA (1841) Virginia 7 VA (1843) William ROBINSON 29 VA Laborer Lucinda ROBINSON 21 VA 917-917 John ROBINSON 42 VA Laborer Mary 47 VA Isaac 22 I found an IGI Record Isaac ROBINSON Census 1818; Hampshire, Virginia Father: John Robinson. 3. Virginia, I have Robinson and HooK family that I just started tracing back to the VA area. My gg-father, John W. Robinson, b. 1843, is reported to have been born around Winchester, VA. It appears, though, that he may have been born in Hampshire Co., WV, which borders the VA county where Winchester is located. I believe John W. is the son of Richard J. Robinson, b. abt. 1812 and Rebecca Hook?. Richard J's father may have been John T. Robinson. As I said, I have just started tracing these leads. 1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Re: Dilley List: Judge Jonathan Dilley b. 1809 VA
    2. Christopher Robinson
    3. Lyenna, Your Jonathan sounds like the individual that is described in the Ephraim Dilley Diary on page 34 as a possible brother to my ggg-father, James Dilley. His probable brothers are listed as Hiram, Luke, and Jonathon in the link below (I have copied this first page below, but you will find more on this family by clicking on the following link and scrolling down around page 34-39): http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tnoye/Ephr31-40.html Their father is listed as Jesse Dilley. Also, please review the census records I have attached below. Sorry, Johnathon is not listed in these but you might find him by searching for him by his first name on the main Dilley page. There are many Dilley records for Guernsey/Noble here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tnoye/a-Dilley.html My gg-mother, Olvie B. Dilley (Robinson) was born to James Dilley and Rebecca Tener in 1848 in Cumberland, Guernsey Co., Ohio. In 1851, this area of Guernsey created part of the new county of Noble, and the family is found in Sarahsville, Noble Co., Ohio where she married my gg-father John W. Robinson on Dec 24, 1867. I have previously listed much of this info, so please contact my if you are a relation and require further info. Let me know if this helps. Thanks, Chris 34. VIRGINIA DILLEYS IN THE CUMBERLAND AREA OF GUERNSEY CO. OHIO One of the largest clans of the Virginia Dilleys is that I call the "Cumberland" Dilleys. The town of Cumberland is located on the southern boundary of Guernsey Co., OH. This location is critical and difficult for research because the county boundaries were changed, and a new county of Noble was founded in 1851 from Guernsey, Morgan and Monroe counties. Some of the Cumberland Dilleys lived in the town as tradesmen and others just south of it in Morgan Co. Therefore, they appeared in several county censuses, although often the same townships, including Morgan and Muskingum counties. They may have lived in the same places but the county boundaries around them changed during the 1840s and 1850s and particularly in 1851 when Noble Co. was created. My purpose here is to give a descriptive account of the clan with my interpretations of their relationships. The supporting data are listed in several sets of census, bible, newspaper, and other records. In 1839, four brothers appeared in Cumberland town and Morgan Co. In the newspaper article entitled "Tales of Old Cumberland," May Stranathan describes the families of Jonathan, James and Hiram Dilley living in or near Cumberland village. The 1840 census showed Luke and Hiram in Cumberland, Spencer Twp, Guernsey Co., whereas James and Jonathan were living together in Morgan Co., Noble Twp. Living with James title oldest son and Jonathan in 1840 was an old couple, and in 1850 a Jesse Dilley age 80 was living with Jonathan in Morgan Co. Both James and Jonathan were men--hants in l850 which may mean country stores. but Jonathan was living in Guernsey. The importance of finding Jesse Dilley living with these two Virginia born brothers is that a Jesse Dilley appeared in the 1820 census for Shenandoah Co., Virginia with eleven children of which five were males. He was still there the 1830 census. In a biography of Judge Jonathan Dilley of Noble Co., OH, he is reported as born on the Potomac River some miles from Washington, but that he was reared in Shenandoah Co., VA. This makes a second circumstantial evidence of a connection of Jonathan to Jesse and Shenandoah Co., VA. The ages of Hiram, James, Jonathan and Luke in 1850 were 38 ', 43, 45, and 50 years respectively. The Stranathan account reports James., Jonathan and Hiram to be brothers. Luke was the oldest and is linked mostly by association with the others at Cumberland as a probable brother. Luke would have been about 20 years of age in 1820 and Jesse had a son in the 15-20 age category then; the ages of the other three brothers fit the categories in Jesse's census record fairly well (males Jesse would have been 50 in 1820 (b 1770 in New Jersey), so he could have had older sons who had left the nest if they were born before 1800 when Jesse was 30, such as Moses b 1794. There is an older generation of Virginia-born Dilleys who settled in the corner around SW Guernsey Co. near Cumberland. John and Moses Dilley arrived in Guernsey Co. about 1812 and they appeared in the 1820 census with families. Moses left a military record for the War of 1812 (may have paid a substitute) from Guernsey Co. He and John Speared in tax records for Morqan Co., which bordered Guernsey on the south, from 1827 to 1829. John disappeared, but Moses continued to live in Morgan or adjacent townsship of Muskingum Co. until 1870, when he was found in Ross Co. Hanrison Twp with three other Dilley families including a Moses age 49close by and a Thomas age 54 who be sons of Moses. Apparently, Moses had moved a little SW to join one or more of his sons in Ross Co., OH. Moses married Jane McGill 5 Aug 1813 and Moses Jr. was born about l82l. Both Moses Jr. and Thomas were born in Ohio, which is possible if Moses Sr., who arrived in Ohio about was their father. There were several more Virginia Dilleys who appear to have links to the Cumberland area. Aaron Dilley and his wife, Mary, both born in Virqinia, appeared in the 1850 census for Allen Co., IN ages 70 and 60. In the same Lafayette Twp lived George Dilley age 31. whose sons were Ichabod, Moses and Silas. These are typical of the biblical names of Virginia Dilleys. This George Dilley enlisted 1850 Census Cumberland twp, Guernsey Co., Ohio >Page 144 Image 2 >Hiram 38 merchant VA; Sarah 34 PA; Mary E 11 OH; Amanda F 7 OH; Nancy 6 OH; >Susan J 3 OH; James H 6/12 OH >Page 144 Image 3 James 43 Merchant TN; Rebecca A 22 OH; Charles C 20 OH; Mary 19 OH; Thos F 16; Merchant OH; Martha 14 OH; Frances A 12 OH; Amanda 10 OH; Elizabeth 8 OH; Olive 1 OH >Page 145 Image 5 >Luke S 30 grocer VA; Mary 45 VA >From: LDickin628@aol.com >To: DILLEY-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Dilley List: Judge Jonathan Dilley b. 1809 VA >Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2003 11:55:43 EDT > >Hi Listers, > >Can anyone identify this Jonathan Dilley's parents? > >Lynnea > >History of Noble County, Ohio Published by L.H. 3. I compiled this in reply to a respondent with a possible lead, but thought I'd post it in case anyone elso out there has any info. (The Teener/Tener relatinship is the mother of my gg-mother Olive B. Dilley. Her mother Rebecca Teener?, b. OH abt. 1828? married James Dilly of VA. I would appreciate any info on this line if any recognizes it.) Thanks for replying to my posting. I just recently acquired some exciting info on John W. Robinson. He was born around WINCHESTER, VA, Jan. 28, 1843, to Richard J Robinson, b. 1812? and Rebecca Hook? he moved to Sarahsville, Noble Co. Ohio in 1854. I do not know if his mother made this journey, or if she had passed away. The family appears in the 1860 census for Sarahsville, Center twp, Noble Co., Ohio p 159: family no 1213 1172 RJ Robinson46 millright 0 realestate $100 personal property born VA Theopolis 21 female domestic born VA John 19 student born VA Francis 13 female born OH margaret 11 born OH? ellen 3 born OH Again in the 1870 Census Sarahsville, Center twp, Noble Co., Ohio: Noble Co., Ohio, Sarasville/Center township, pg 66 John Robinson, 27, b. ROBINSON Dau S Female W 33 OH Teacher --- --- Much of this info was provided by a fellow researcher, unrelated to the family, Shannon Moore, and others, and it is greatly appreciated. John W. Robinson also appears in the book The History of Noble County, and I am in the process of obtaining a copy of this from the library. He is reported to have served in Company E, 88th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Also may have had an uncle, JOSEPH L. ROBINSON in Middleburg?, Ohio. I am very excited to have these new revelations and would appreciate any additional info you can provide. I would like to follow the line back further (to Scotland? or England? if possible) or obtain other details. Also get in touch with any decendents, no matter how distant! I have other info including the Dilley line that I would be happy to share. Please get in touch. Thanks, Chris _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? 1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] I hope they have had a copy made of the blind
    2. In a message dated 4/18/03 8:01:41 AM Pacific Daylight Time, OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: I didn't find any of my names on the Henry family "blind" but I do have a comment. I hope that the person who owns this blind with all the information on it, has had it copied, and I don't mean put on a database. Take the blind to a blueprint place and have them make a copy, both sides, for you. You have a record that this person did in their own handwriting. It's important to keep. It's family history. That's what its all about. Annie > As the story goes, "Aunt Annie" wrote letters to family members requesting > family information. 1. [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] Henry Family [Smathers]

    3. From: "Patrick J. Henry" <pjhenry@mindspring.com> To: PACLARIO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CLARION] John Henry and Ester McConnell of Pennsylvania I have information on John HENRY b: 1759 d: Feb 2, 1819 - m: Ester McCONNEL {Note: Both Scotch-Irish descent, settled in Clarion Co. in spring 1799 and returned to Westmoreland Co. for the winter bringing his family the next spring (1800) to Clarion Co. to live.}. Unfortunately, of the 151 names that I have in this line, I have very little details. This information comes from a window blind that my grandaunt, Anna Mae (HENRY) MILNER, sister of my grandfather, Alva Leroy HENRY. As the story goes, "Aunt Annie" wrote letters to family members requesting family information. The letters have long since been lost, but she transcibed the information onto a window blind. I have no idea where she found a window blind that is 5 ft wide by 8 ft high, but she found one. She then drew a tree on one side using different color crayons to draw the limbs. The one side, which I refer to as the front side, contained 896 names and is my direct line. My name was even included in this information. All of my brothers and sisters, except the baby of the family, were included. Therefore, this dates the creation of the window blind to some time between March 1960 and December 1965. On the other side (the back side), she drew another tree which was color coded and contained 151 names. There is no indication as to the relationship of the people on the front side to the people on the back side. Aunt Annie also used names such as Tommy, Billy, and Bobby. There are 2 problems with this: 1) I am assuming that Tommy = Thomas, Billy = William, etc. and 2) I don't know if these are their first names or middle names. My older brother is shown as "Allen", but his name is Glenn Alan. So she used his middle name and misspelled it. She also did not include surnames on each branch, so I tried to be very careful when transcribing the families. There were only dates on some of the main branches. Hence, getting the birth order correct was next to impossible. Well, enough about the blind. I have included the transcribed information below. I am looking for anyone who can help me make the connection between the front and back side trees. If you have any connections to this line, I would like to converse with you. Please contact me, Patrick J. Henry, 2527 Elizabeth Drive, Pelham, AL 35124-2607, or at pjhenry@mindspring.com. Note : The ID numbers used below are derived from my own system using the pedigree chart as the master. Example number : H0008.4.2.1 The H indicates that this person can be found on the Henry side of the genealogy, while a leading L indicates that this person can be found on the Lyon (my wife's maiden name) side of the family genealogy. The first number (leading zeroes are optional) indicates the position on the pedigree chart where we have a common ancestor. I am # 1 on the pedigree chart. My father is # 2 and my mother is #3. My father's father is # 4 and my father's mother is #5, etc., etc. As for our example number, we can now determine how this person is related to me!!! H00008.4.2.1 ^\-+-/ ^ ^ ^ | | | | +----First found child of the previous person | | | +------Second found child of the previous person | | +--------Fourth found child of Number Eight on the Pedigree chart | +------------Number Eight on the Pedigree chart {which is our common ancestor) +---------------Henry side of the genealogy. I hope this does not confuse you too much. I used the word "Found" instead of "born" because many times I did not find an older brother or sister until after I had already assigned a number to this person. So, as not to have to re-number people once I found an older sibling, I just numbered them as I FOUND them. Also, if I could not determine the exact spelling, I transcibed the name as best I could and noted the possible spelling error with a "(sp?)" notation. If the information was unreadable or missing, I put the notation "?" in place of the data. Names from the back side of the window blind: I) John Henry b: 1759 d: Feb 2, 1819 - m: Ester McConnel (sp?)
