Could Soham perhaps be some sort of abbreviation for Southampton which was at one time a county in its own right? I'm not sure where the county boundaries were but the present-day Hampshire is on the western border of Sussex. Debbie Kennett
Debbie, I think that you are possibly right - I have seen Southampton as a county abbreviated many ways. I was looking too closely and not taking the ohrase as a whole. "Of the County of Southampton" could be a plausible suggestion.
