Hello Adrian, I don't know about Hereford bust most of the ancient cathedrals were also parish churches with a parish and parishioners. Quite a few of my 18th c family were baptised, married or buried in Canterbury Cathedral and its "cloyster yard" one of the graveyards in the Close. These events had nothing to do with status or fees - they lived (and worked) in the parish. One of them was a servant to a Canon and then when the Canon died became watchman and greenkeeper. There were many such, as the parish was a busy and well populated area. Jim Halsey
