Hello Eve, Many thanks for your ihelpful interpretation of the record. My remark regarding the appearance of a Tomkinson in London in 1404 was occasioned by research into the name which suggests that it originated with one family in the Blore/Calton area of Staffordshire in the latter part of the 14th. century, from where it spread across the country. I believe that it is also considered that all names with the suffix "son" all originate from the more northern half of the country. I have also seen no evidence that Tomkinson was derived from any other of the diminuitives of Tom. I'm inclined to think that Robert Thompkynsone was from the same line of the Staffordshire family, which had Robert as a favourite name. Regards, Don Tomkinson
