Tulsa World Newspaper, Thursday, October 7, 1937, page 8 "PIONEER TULSAN TAKEN BY DEATH--S. J. CUNNINGHAM, FARMER AND VETERINARIAN, CAME TO CITY IN 1894" Mr. Samuel J. Cunningham, a 72-year old pioneer veterinarian, died of a heart ailment Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. G. Harlow, living northwest of Tulsa. Born in Canada, Mr. Cunningham moved with his parents to Minneapolis, MN when he was 11 years old. In 1888, he married Miss Louise Walker of Black Earth, Wisconsin and together they came to Tulsa in 1894 to make their home. Cunningham practiced as a veterinarian for many years and was one of the first in the Indian Territory. He later turned to farming. One of his hay meadows occupied the site where the University of Tulsa now stands. He retired about 10 years ago, relatives said. He is survived by the widow, Louise, now visiting at Portland, Oregon; 4 daughters, Mrs. Harlow, Mrs. May Owens and Miss Velma Cunningham, all of Portland, and Mrs. Nellie Wallace of 1203 N. Wheeling Ave., Tulsa; 1 son, Roy J. Cunningham of Portland, Oregon; a brother, Jim Cunningham of Great Falls, Montana; 2 sisters, Mrs. Vina Jay of Oakland, California and Mrs. Emma McFadden of Neche, North Dakota; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------

The Peterman property that was their farm is all now under water. I would imagine the rest of Keystone is also. The army engineers surveyed and the propery was bought and paid for in late 1950's before my grandfather died. Not much information, but I hope it helps. Janet

Surnames: Cunningham, Harlow, Davenport, Moore, Walker, Ray Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EZB.2ACE/1197.2.1 Message Board Post: Hi Susan, Yes, I have recently discovered that this Samuel J. Cunningham was the vet that you mention! I have recently heard from a Sandra Atkins, whose grandmother Elona Susan (Harlow) Davenport was a daughter of the Elona "Pearl" (Cunningham) Harlow that you mention. We have been tracing the descendants of Samuel Cunningham (~1800-1890) who immigrated to Canada from Antrim Co., Ireland in the early 1830's and eventually settled in Greenock Twp., Bruce Co., Ontario. We are very interesting in learning anything we can about any of the family members! While most of the Cunnighams remained in Canada, Samuel & Priscilla (Moore) Cunningham's eldest son William Cunningham migrated to Crookston, Minnesota in the 1870s, along with his wife Margaret and seven children. In Minnesota, William & Margaret's daughter Sophy Cunningham married Loren H. Walker. William & Margaret's son Samuel J. Cunnigham married Louie Elona Walker, who was a daughter of Loren Walker by his first marriage. In the mid 1890s, Loren & Sophy Walker and family moved to Missouri, as did Samuel & Elona Cunningham, the parents William & Margaret Cunningham, and single brother Alexander Cunningham. In the months following Loren Walker's 1897 death in Brownbranch, Taney Co., Missouri, all of the mentioned Cunningham family members came to Tulsa: - The parents, William & Margaret (Huston) Cunningham. William died between 1897 and 1900 and Margaret between 1900 and 1910. We do not know where they are buried. - The widow Sophy (Cunningham) Walker and her children Gertie, Wilford, Bertram, Percy, & Arthur Walker. Sophy died in 1927 and her son Wilford died unmarried in 1926. Gertie Ray (d. 1960), Bert Walker, and Arthur G. Walker (d. 1964) all remained in Tulsa. - Samuel J. & Louie (Walker) Cunningham and children Pearl, Nelie, May, and Valma (Chick). Samuel died in 1937 and is supposed to be buried at Rose Hill Cemetery. - Alexander Cunningham (b. 1863). He was living in Tulsa in 1910. We do not know what became of him. He may have been buried near his parents. Best wishes! ---Mark
