Oaklawn Cemetery is still physically located at 1133 East llth Street - that is at the intersection of 11th and Peoria. I do not believe that any graves have been relocated. There is not an office on the site - I believe that the City of Tulsa now possesses the records of burials there and many graves are unmarked. I contacted the city office at 918-591-4325 and they were very helpful in giving me information on burials and the dates of burials. Sondra
For anyone interested in Oaklawn, it is online at: http://angelfire.com/oh2/fountainofyouth/oaklawn.html If this doesn't work -- I found it through "Cyndi's List" Tulsa Cemetery Inscriptions No 5 I do not know if it is a complete listing. A partial listing of "Rose Hill" is also on Cyndi's List. Georgie Drew
Hi Bonnie; I was there and talked to the foreman. I do not recall him saying any graves were moved but they did build a freeway on the west side. This was a Paupers area. I believe the area nearest the freeway Was the colored section. [this is the area where they buried the blacks after the race riot the had there, the one that was on TV.] I never knew much about it even though I grew up there. Was not even mentioned in our local histery classes. There are a few stones scattered over the area, mostly very small, some are just rocks. My brother was buried in the white section which was farther away from the freeway but they could not tell me exactly where as they don't have any records. This area is only a small section of the cemetery. It may be 1/2 mi. X 1/4 mile in size. It is considered full now altho there are some buriels taking place there now. The city owns and controls the cemetery altho I do not know wich department. That is about all I know about it. I suggest that you contact the Tulsa Geneological Society as they have all of the funeral homes records in book form [ 10 Volumes ] So they should know the answers to your questions. I joined them when I was there but only recieved 1 of thier quarterlies and then they wanted another years dues and never sent any more. Seems thier membership only runs June to June and they do not discount or send back issues. Glen frank cook wrote: > > No, I am not getting most of the messages either. No, I am not getting most of the messages either. I , too am interested in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Does anyone know if part of the graves were moved to another cemetery?? I have ancestors buried there but cannot find their graves and another person said they thought part of the cemetery had been moved when they expanded the roads, etc. Can anyone verify this for sure. In answer to my query, Mowbray Funeral Home does not exist now. It was at 902 S. Boulder. There is an Ennis Funeral Home at 906 S. Boulder whom I will contact, just in case. Thanks for the answers to my query. Alene
The replies to my query about Oaklawn Cemetery show an address for it at 1133 E. 11th. So thanks to everyone who wrote. Alene
Peggy, I took responded to Alene thinking that the reply would go to the list. I didn't see it there or the other replies that she spoke about. When I started to reply to this email, I noticed that it only put your email address and not OKTULSA-L and so I had to add that address to get it to the whole list. Does anyone know when this change was made? A few months ago if I had replied, it would have gone back to the list. Is it my new email program that is 'at fault'? My father is researching the old Mark Twain Elementary school in west Tulsa that burned down somewhere between 1910 and 1924 in Tulsa. Does anyone have any information or a possible date to narrow it down to? Did anyone attend the old Mark Twain? Am also looking for pictures of it. Angela Baldwin [email protected]

I am attempting to locate the Mowbray funeral home records for Charles Johnson who died in Tulsa March 21, 1914. Is this record in the ten volumes of funeral records published by the Tulsa Genealogical Society? A lookup would be most appreciated. Alene
Thank you for all the replies regarding my queries on the Oaklawn Cemetery and the Mowbray funeral home. I've tried to reply to each, but may have missed someone. Alene
