It was a U.S. government program, and a number of activities were conducted or performed. It seems the initials stood for "Works in Progress Administration." There are schools, bridges, and buildings built by W.P.A. workers. Many structures in Oklahoma were marked with the initials "W.P.A." Some clerical-types traveled about and documented interviews--of former slaves, Indians on reservations, cowboys in Texas, etc. I know the building well that was at 602 South Cheyenne Avenue. It was a three- or four-story brick building. The Tulsa County courthouse was located at the Northeast corner of Sixth and Boulder. Each year, my father came to Tulsa to pay ad valorem taxes. We would usually park around Sixth and Cheyenne and walk a block to Sixth and Boulder. His trip to the courthouse coincided with my being out of school for Christmas and I got to come with him. We would slip into a courtroom and listen to a court proceeding, which made our trip more special. In the 1950s, as a teenager, I worked a couple summers for Tulsa Community Chest (now the United Way), which was located in the red-brick building at 602 South Cheyenne. Teenage girls were hired to perform a door-to-door survey of downtown employers with fewer than twelve employees. After our survey was completed, we typed pledge cards for the employees. It was an interesting experience, sometimes met with hateful business people who didn't want to cooperate--but most were nice. I hope the above enlightens you on the W.P.A. Peggy in Tulsa

Don't forget the Charles Page Widow and Orphans Home in Sand Springs, which did adoptions also. It was operational into the 1920s, and early on it did accept 'widows' and women like my great-grandmother, who's husband had abandoned the family in 1911. Since she was ill and couldn't care properly for her children, she stayed there for awhile and then left her two young children there where they grew up. The Home is still open and has good records, which they gladly shared, including photos. Sandy Simons Cotter Fullerton, CA [email protected]

Thank you, [email protected] >> I was born about halfway between Broken Arrow, Bixby, and Jenks, near 101st and South Garnett, in 1937. I cannot recall a home for unwed mothers in Bixby. The St. John's Vianney School was near Jenks, on 101st Street, about one-half to 3/4ths mile East of the Arkansas River. I do not know if there were unwed mothers there, but it was a Catholic institution for "runaway" and delinquent girls. The building was about five stories high and it was large enough to have had a section for births. I'll ask my sister who was born in 1931 if she has any ideas. My first husband, Earl Truesdell, was an attorney and later a judge in Tulsa County, until his death in 1978. Judge Dorothy Young was over the Juvenile Court in the 1950s and 1960s. Adoptions went through her court and records were in the Probate division of the Court Clerk's Office, where I worked for over five years. A young woman contacted me because Earl had handled her adoption while still an attorney. She wanted to know if I knew of any existing records or files from his office. I did have the receipt book and had written the receipt myself ($100--would you believe?) but no records. She said the court records were "white-washed." She really needed information because her three children have a genetic disease. Her mother had a Bixby rural address. The Sand Springs Orphans Home existed for many years. In Tulsa, there was the Frances E. Willard Home, formerly located near Mohawk Park, but now on Gilcrease Road, just north of Gilcrease Museum. Two doors from my house is the Madonna House, run by Catholic Charities. Many adoptions in Tulsa and this area have been facilitated through Catholic Charities. There once was a home on West Easton, which was for mothers in need of shelter. Mothers could leave children there and work, and when they got on their feet, the children could be reclaimed. For many years, the Turley Children's Home (North Tulsa) was run by the Church of Christ. It may still exist in another location. Maybe there will be some clues in some of the above information. Good luck! Peggy in Tulsa Peggy King Truesdell Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma e-mail: [email protected]
