1. RE: [OKTulsa] Tulsa newspapers
    2. Trent Eyler
    3. Howdy Georgie! My Great-Grandfather, Peter Minder Eyler, had one or two newspapers in Collinsville between about 1904 and 1920. He also might have edited/published a paper in Oologah about 1900 for a year or two. Do you know if you have any of those newspapers, too? Thanks, Trent Eyler -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 25, 2002 10:29 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OKTulsa] Tulsa newspapers I work at The University of Tulsa. We have several reels of Tulsa newspapers. I don't remember what dates were being discussed. I do know there was a "Tulsa Daily Democrat". The TU library has: Vol. 1, no. 1 (Sept. 27, 1904)-v. 16, no. 58 (Dec. 5, 1919) I know there are other papers. We even have "The Cherokee Messenger" If you will send me the requested info, I will see if I can help you. Georgie Drew --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. She suggested that you contact the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City (their website is www.ok-history.mus.ok.us) and make an inquiry with them to see what they can find. I think you might possibly get lucky since you have a more specific, exact date/range of dates that makes it easier to search. You need to ask if they require a small fee (perhaps within the range of $10-$25 to do searches). [email protected]

    1. [OKTulsa] "Growing Up With Tulsa"
    2. I have just moved the "Growing Up With Tulsa" pages to the books section at Rootsweb Freepages. This book was written and self published by Blanche Opal Kern Schad of Tulsa, OK. She was a Harrison descendant and first cousin to my G-grandfather, Herman Harrison who lived in Saunders Co., Nebraska. Opal's mother Emma Justine Harrison and my GG-grandfather Richard Harrison (Cuming Co., NE) were siblings. Emma and her husband Charles Wesley Kern went from Saunders Co., NE to OK Territory in 1893 and settled in Tulsa. This is a story of the family and Opal and her older siblings and later their own families growing up with Tulsa from territorial days to statehood and through 2 World Wars, etc. Opal's son Harry of Tulsa, OK gave me permission to transcribe and put his mother's book online. It is not available, except at the Tulsa library and by Opal's immediate family. Please update your bookmarks. There are currently all but 3 chapters now online and more will be added as time permits. Please be sure to check back often. Growing Up With Tulsa http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/tulsa/index.html Always digging for my roots, Kathie Harrison Lancaster Co. Ames who appeared in the 1920 Census as living in the Houck Garden Addition to Tulsa, married to Kate W. with one daughter, Mona C. I would like to confirm whether or not this is J(ohn) Tilford Ames, son of Charles T. Ames and Martha Nelson, born in Wilson Cty, KS. If so, I would be very interested in sharing information about his mother's family. I have quite a bit on his maternal grandmother's line, but am very anxious for a lead on his maternal grandfather, John Nelson. I would also like information on his descendants.

Unfortunately, the Tulsa World newspaper did not begin until 1906, so it is going to be a little bit more difficult to find this particular obituary, since there may not have been any formal printing presses/newspapers operating in the newly formed Indian Territory at that time. I will do some more checking and let you know if anything comes up. [email protected]

So he must have disconnected rather recently for the number to still be listed? I only recently found the number while on vacation and searching old records of a funeral home!! This branch of my family tree has been most elusive. J. W. would almost surely have had to have been in his late eighties if not nineties!! Through Switchboard.com I've found other Harrises in the same town so I'll send them all a letter of inquiry, maybe one will answer. Thanks for your help.

Surnames: Harris - Hanigan - Hawkins - Bagby - Nichols Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EZB.2ACE/668 Message Board Post: In 1983, J.W. Harris listed his phone number as (918) 435-4383 on the paperwork for the funeral preparations of his aunt, Jeffa Wesley Hawkins. I am looking for this branch of my family tree. My great aunt, Dora Josephine NICHOLS b.4/17/1870 in Franklin County, Arkansas married Samuel Wesley HAWKINS on Nov. 1, 1885. They had three daughters, Jeffa who never married, and Grace b.9/27/1895. Grace married a Harry E.BAGBY b. 9/14/1884 and Lillian b. 1897 in Washington County, Arkansas, died 1939. It is Lillian that we suspect is the mother of J. W. Harris. Either she divorced Harris or was widowed, we don't know. But we do know that Lillian is buried in Bluff Cemetery in Springdale, Arkansas as Lilliam Hawkins HANIGAN and that a C. E. Hanigan bought the cemetery plot and paid for the funeral. Dora's obit refers to a grandson, J.W.HARRIS. Another clipping of a family reunion lists J.W. Harris of Tulsa, OK and his daughter Sherrill. This clipping was about 1937 or thereabouts! .
