    2. Connie, best of luck in locating your roots. The Chickasaw Nation was part of the Indian Territory before Oklahoma was made a state in 1907. It was a large area, and Stephens County (and Duncan) are located in a part of what was once the Chickasaw Nation, I think. Most of the Cherokee Tribe, however, made their headquarters in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. That area in NE Oklahoma has a rich treasure of Cherokee records. I would certainly suggest making contact with the Tahlequah site for further info. I was a kid in grade school in Duncan when you were born, and my wife and I both went to school with several Mooney family members. Hope this helps a little. Duane Monkres Edmond, OK

    3. This list is very interesting. It has 2 of my family history surnames. Also, I noticed Mankiller. Wilma Mankiller was the Chief of the Cherokee Nation a few years ago. 1. [OKSTEPHE Genealogy] James HICKEY & Judge I PARKER, hang'n judge & Stephens Co. OK
    2. Hello everyone, I received this a little while ago, please read and see my question under this paragraph: ... "The only court with jurisdiction over the Indian Territory was the U. S. Court for the Western District of Arkansas located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Fort Smith was situated on the border of Western Arkansas and Indian Territory. To this court came Judge Issac Parker who was named to replace a corrupt judge at Fort Smith in May of 1875. A severe and able Federal Judge, Issac Parker was nicknamed "The Hanging Judge" because of the many men he sent to the gallows." ... Does anyone know if there is names and events data during Judge Issac Parker's period. I am searching for info on the March 18, 1875 murder of James HICKEY in Stephens Co., IT (now Oklahoma). I realize the murder was 2 months before Parker's office but thought I would try anyway. 1. [OKSTEPHE Genealogy] HICKEY murder near Loco or Duncan, Stephens Co.OK +WARD + HEAD
    2. I sure hope someone can help me! I received information that my ancestor James HICKEY was murdered in or near Loco and/or Duncan, Indian Territory. I think that is Stephens Co., OK. This happend while his 3 year old son watched. However, and I'm trying to confirm this story. James was married to Minerva Catherine "Callie" WARD from MS. He had a daughter also, named Sallie M. HICKEY who married James Ezra HEAD. Based on my information the murder by gunshots happened Mar 19, 1876. I'm hoping that there would be a newspaper article on the murder. Would someone tell me what paper(s) or reporting agencies would have covered this area in 1875? Also, does anyone know if the court house has coroner inquest records? And what court house would that be for 1875? I don't know where he was buried. I tried the Indian Territory list and did not gain any information from that. I thought I would try here again get some direction. Please, can anyone help me with this. I would be happy to pay money for concrete proof if that is what it is going to take to solve this. I live in northern California and am unable to physically search that area. Here are the additions. Irene Ramsey was born in Texas and her mother Emma was born in Texas and Irene's father was born in Mississippi. Even if the names Rowan and Clara don't sound familiar and the rest does. Please email me. Irene may have remarried and the kids may have taken a new name. I am looking for a divorce decree for P.L. (Preston) Leonard and Irene Ramsey. This is the timeline of what I know for them: 1. P.L. Leonard and Irene Ramsey married June 26, 1916 in Anadarko, OK. 2. P.L and Irene's first child, Clara Norene Leonard was born in 1917. 3. P.L. and Irene's second child, Rowan "Preston" Leonard was born in 1919. 4. In 1920 P.L. Irene, "little Preston" and Norene were living in McKinley Township, Anadarko,OK. This is where we loose track of them. Irene and her parents (father's name unknown, mother's name was Emma) took the children and left. Now, P.L. went to Lawton, OK because in 1924, he married Mollie Rutherford in Lawton and that is also where they divorced. I have called Comanche County and they do not have a divorce decree there for P.L. and Irene. I also called Cadoo County and they told me the same, no divorce decree. P.L's obituary, says that he was in Duncan before going to Lawton,Ok. The only other County they had lived in that I know of was Grady County,OK Could someone check to see if there is a divorce decree for them there in Stephens County? I'd appreciate it so much. I have incurred so much money on phone calls trying to find out something. Towns are York - IT, Kiowa, Ryan, Comanche, Healdton, Terral, Rush Springs, Duncan and Hollis. The Stewart's seem to have been born mostly in TX, don't know exactly where yet. > >If anyone on this list knows the history (or where I can find out about it) of York - Indian Territory, I'd sure like to know. I do know it had a post office from 1894 to 1914 and was named after the first postmaster and York is no longer there. Joseph F. York seems to have been my greatgreatgrandfather.
