Has anyone on the list heard of a company called Younger Brothers? They were a company that built roads. I believe they had an office in Duncan, Stephens County, OK. Time would have been in the mid 1920s to unknown. Thanks for the help. Paula
I haven't encountered any of those names yet, but I'll keep my eyes open for them and your request in mind. thedsmith@aol.com 1.24.2000 ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Looking for the Goss/Gross family. Does anyone recall this family having been teachers in Duncan in the 1900s? I'm interested in their daughter Maude Goss/Gross who married a Chrisman. Maude and her husband lived on a ranch or farm off the road going to Marlow. Maude and her husband W. P. Chrisman would have married sometime after 1924. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. Thanks for the help. Paula (in Oregon)
Dr. McElhinney was the family dentist when I was a kid growing up in Duncan. His office was on 9th Street, a half block north of Main on the east side of the street, directly behind the Rexall Drug Store and across the street from the Western Union office. I remember him as a tall man (but maybe at my age all men were tall) and a very friendly, kind person. I have no idea if the Duncan Banner keeps an OBIT file, although most of their issues are on file on microfilm at the Duncan Public Library. You might try checking with Grantham Funeral Home, which is still in business in Duncan and was there during the '50's; the only other funeral home, as far as I can remember, was the Boydston Funeral Home, but there is no longer a funeral home in Duncan by that name. Good luck in your search. Duane Monkres Edmond, OK
Will try one last time. I want someone to do a search of the Duncan directories starting about 1950 and going backwards and forward for Wilmer McElhinney (dentist) and his wife and children. Does Duncan have a newspaper that has Obituary files? Thank you for any help. Alice
I am looking for Joseph F. YORK b. abt. 1850 AL?. He at least 8 children, one named General Jackson and another Lee. I can't find him on any census. I know he most likely was the postmaster of York, I.T., OK when it existed from 1894 to 1914. Most or all of his children were born in AL. he and family migrated to south central OK after 1875 but before 1894. He may have been in northern TX at some point. I have found General b. 1875 AL on 1900, 1910 and 1920 census and Lee on 1920. Any information on any York's would be appreciated. Joseph and Martha STEWART had 8 children all born in northern TX. Joe & family migrated to northern TX from Tenn probably after 1872 but before 1877. Martha died in 1892 and is buried in Montague County, TX. Am looking for any info on them. Joseph remarried - don't know to who. He is probably buried in Montague Co., also. Martha Elizabeth's maiden name was WILSON. I need a refresher at the rootsweb site. Can someone tell me at the homepage, where to do the following: Subscrbe to the Ramsey surname list Subscribe to the Cooke County Texas list. I just never seem to get to the correct place. I know it would be faster getting it this way than going through all the links. Sorry but I sure would appreciate it! Jennifer
Thanks for clearing that up (I was very thankful that his last name was not Herman as I had that same thought!) Carol
Well, at least we know it's not Herman! ha ha! Yes, I'd like to know about the curator. I have some late 1800's photos he'd probably be interested in. Hi, Would you happen to know if he is online? Or an address or phone? Meaning Pee Wee Cary, the curator of Stephens co., that is. Thanks, Becky <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> My York & Baer Family site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ouryorks ____________________________________________________________ Paternal: YORK,STEWART, LEE, TUNSTALL, WILSON,GEE,HONNOLL,McHENRY,MARTIN Other: STOUT, STINNETT, THOMPSON Maternal: BAER, KEAGY, BROWN, CHARLESWORTH, BARROW(S) , FERGUSON, HUMBLE, GATES, BRADLEY, BESWICK(E), < dalton@nidlink.com > <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
I'm not sure why Duane thought his name was Green, but the curator's name is Pee Wee Cary. As far as I know, neither he nor the museum is online, although info about the museum is at www.duncanok.org/museum.htm through the Duncan Chamber of Commerce. The museum's phone number is 580-252-0717 and, according to this website, they are open on Tues., Thurs., Fri., and Sat. from 1 - 5 pm. Thank you, Duane. I'll try to find the curator. I am in Idaho and don't know much about OK except what I've learned researching. History and geography were never my favorites. But I am learning! I don't know if he is on-line yet, but I recommend that you contact PeeWee Green, the curator of the Stephens County Historical Museum in Duncan. Good luck. (And Merry Christmas) Duane
Rebecca, You might try to get in touch with the Daily Ardmoreite in Ardmore. I bet someone there could tell you where the Worthmore store was. If not, maybe they would know of a local historian you could get in touch with. Their web address is www.ardmoreite.com. Let us know if you find any more clues. I've lived here all my life. I'm not real up on history, but maybe I can help. Anita
I just discovered a clue on an old photo I rec'd from a relative a few days ago. Does anyone know where Worthmore Store (don't know what kind) was or is located? The photo is very early 1900's in south central OK. I am searching for relatives of Richard Edwards who moved to Duncan, OK, in about 1900. I am not sure of his parentage, but our Edwards line is as follows: Hugh Edwdards and Evaline had three children all born in Tennessee: Nancy Frances Edwards b 1834, Carrie b 1846, and N. G. "Nick" b about 1850. Nancy Frances married H. W. Campbell; Carrie married William Leighton Holt. and we don't know who Nick married. I am trying to run down the Holt line and we have a record of Richard Edwards having lived in Duncan, OK, and then some of the family moving to Oregon. Does anyone have a record of any of these people in Stephens County in the late 1800s or around 1900? Thanks. Shirley Holt
