Posted on: Stephens Co. OK Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Stephens?read=314 Surname: Caywood ------------------------- Yes, this is the same family. They came to Stephens County from Texas. The only mention I have found of John Edwin's mother refers to her as Indian Maiden. I hope to find their marriage certificate. They were married in Missouri around 1875 and Benjamin Thomas and John appear in the 1880 census of Grayson County, Texas. John was 5 years old at that time which was about the time Benjamin and Mary Jane Lemons were married. There is information on the Caywood family to be found in a book written by Col. James Presgraves. It can be ordered from the LDS family history library on microfilm. Gedforum also has a Caywood surname page. I have met several cousins there. Caywoods were a prolific family and there are lots of us, mostly related! I hope to get my research together to put it on a web page soon. I have some material which came from Rachel Trolinder, a daughter of Hattie May, another Caywood sister. I would be interested in any information you might have on this family.

Sheri, in the late 40's....1948 for sure, the sheriff of Stephens County was Bobby Cates. He was a small fellow, and I can remember him campaigning at the Halliburton Plant #1 Gate. He had a bit of a rough go in the Helen Beavers murder case. That Cates may have been a descendant of the 1909 Cates....not sure. Duane

I've been contacted by someone who purchased a sheriff's badge at an estate sale that reads "W.M. Cates, Stephens County Oklahoma, Sheriff, 1909". They would like to contact the family of W. M. Cates, but are having trouble finding out information on him. Please contact me if you think you can help. Thanks.
