From the Bakersfield Californian, Bakersfield, CA A private memorial service will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Hodels Restaurant for Lewis Thomas Long, who died June 18, 2001, in Golden, MO. Louie was born December 7, 1927 in Marble City, OK. He and his family moved to the McFarland area when he was one year old. Before graduating from McFarland High School, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines to help serve his country during the Korean War. After discharge, he met and married Lily Chroman. They had three children; Lisa Marie, Leah Ann and Lewis Thomas, Jr. Louie farmed in the McFarland-Delano area for several years, then accepted a job with the Kern County Fire Department in Bakersfield. He retired as Fire Captain in 1983 after 27 years with the Fire Department. Louie loved to fish and travel. He journeyed to Mexico numerous times for sport fishing, and every year he would trek to the remote wilderness of Canada for his annual fishing trip to Eleven Sisters Lakes. During retirement he frequently traveled throughout the United States and Canada and visited friends all over the world. He lived for a number of years on Camano Island, WA, surrounded by the abundant, fish-filled waters of Puget Sound. Louie enjoyed his garden and his animals, and always had a soft spot in his heart for all small children. Recently, he purchased a home with property adjacent to Table Rock Lake (for easy-access fishing) in southern Missouri. It was there that he passed away. Louie was preceded in death by his parents, William and Myrtle (Keck) Long; his brother Bill Long and sisters Kate Potorff and Faylene Hubbard. He is survived by his wife, Janet Long; his children, Lisa Meehan and husband Jim, Leah Huber, and Lewis Long Jr. and wife Cathy; grandchildren, John Huber and wife Dani, Christopher Huber, Jason Fransham and wife Joelle, Lacy Long, and Lucy Long; great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Ryan Fransham; favorite cousin, Major Byrd; special niece, Pam Carleton and husband Mike, and many friends.
