I have been advised that the library in Sallisaw (Stanley Tubbs Library) has copies of the marriage books for the marriages that were recorded in Craig Co. before statehood. Good information to know! If I were in there looking for those records, I would completely skip over the Craig Co. books!!! I guess for original copies you would still need to go through Craig Co. Becky
I got a phone call today in response to the letters I sent out looking for a Sequoyah Co. Genealogical Society. I learned that there is no more Sequoyah Society, but there IS a Muldrow Genealogical Society which does have a lot of Sequoyah Co. information. The kind lady who took the time to call me said she is a member of the Muldrow Society, and used to be a member of the Sequoyah Co. one. She said that the library in Muldrow has many publications about Sequoyah Co. She also told me that some time ago, there was a lot of records in the basement of the courthouse. (Marriage type records) and someone at the courthouse GAVE THEM to a person who was possibly the president of the Genealogical Society at the time. She thinks these records ended up at the Historical Society. It sounds like getting in to the Historical Society is hit and miss. I didn't get the impression that the records were really available to look through, but I may be wrong. She also told me that any marriages in the county before statehood were recorded and kept in CRAIG CO. Does anyone have any experience with that??? Becky
Becky, the library in Muldrow is pretty good. The one in Sallisaw is my second choice. The old newspapers are on microfilm at the newspaper office and the last time I went there they did not have a microfilm reader with printer. At the courthouse look at the indexes, probate etc., write down names and numbers of records you want to see, THEN go to the vault. You are pretty much on your own at the courthouse. Try the funeral homes. I believe the Agent funeral home is the oldest one. The best resource I found in Sallisaw was by talking to some of the older people on the street or at restaurants. Good luck. Sandy in Anadarko, Ok.
I am going on a very short trip (5 days) to Sallisaw. I was wondering what the "Not to miss" research places are. The libraries in Sallisaw and Muldrow? I know the library at Ft. Smith is not to be missed. For old Sequoyah Co. newspapers, does anyone know where I would find a good selection of the old stuff?? And any tips for the courthouse would be greatly appreciated. I went there once and had absolutely no luck! I was shown this little tiny vault type room and had no idea what to do from there. TIA, Becky
