    1. Ike & James Copeland shootout 1934
    2. Becky
    3. Sequoyah Co. Times December 21, 1934 COPELAND BROTHERS IN SHOTGUN DUEL Ike Copeland, 62 years old, pioneer Sequoyah Co. farmer, was dead and his brother, James Copeland, 49 years old, wounded as a result of a shotgun duel Wednesday morning at the home of the latter in the Brent community located 9 miles South of Sallisaw. "Ike came to my house and started shooting," County attorney Fred Green quoted Jim Copeland as saying. Green said the fatal altercation apparently was the outgrowth of an argument the two had last summer over posession of a house occupied by James Copeland. The younger brother, shot in the left arm and stomach, told officers his brother came to his home and challenged him to a duel. He said he refused the challenge and that his brother opened fire, and that he returned the fire through a window. Both had shotguns. The county attorney said that the filing of charges depended on the outcome of James Copeland's condition. He has a wife and three children. The slain man is survived by his wife, Verna Copeland, a son Jack, 36, and a daughter Polly, 30; two brothers, Jess and Jim, and four sisters, Mrs. Eliza Jane Cauthron, Mrs. Cassie Cox, Mrs. Alice Roland all of Sallisaw, and Mrs. Ella Wooten of Wagoner. Funeral services were held at 2:30pm Thursday at Copeland Cemetery, Rev. W.E. Rockett officiating and Moore's Funeral Home in charge.
