I have looked for a relative in the 1900 census and can't seem to find her. She was an unwed mother at the age of 13 in 1900 and an orphan. This occurred in Pottawatomie Co. in 1899. Was there such a place as a home for unwed mothers in Oklahoma or Indian Territories during this time period? I don't have a clue as to where to look for her. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Leslie lliddiard@nc.rr.com
Was Whitaker State Orphans' Home in Pryor in operation at the turn of the century? They might have housed unwed mothers who were also orphans. However, I do not know how to get their files. I have been trying to get info on a later incarnation of this place--called Whitaker State Children's Home in the early to late 70's (a home for problem and neglected children). The state later shut it down in the early 80's because of a lawsuit. If anyone on this list knows anything about Whitaker, I'd love to hear from you. Stephanie
