This morning in Lookups I stayed in Newspaper work. I really love old newspapers, especially the old western ones at the turn of the century. There is a great book about Old Newspapers called: "Red Blood and Black Ink" by David Dary it was just published this year, (1998) but is awesome work if you are interested in Newspapers at all I recommend it. (It might even have a relative of yours in it, since it is just chock full of old columns and articles, and pictures) Two things will sure fire get you into the papers. Being a lawyer, and being an outlaw. For this reason the first things I looked up were the surnames COOK and DICKSON. AUNTYDO: Have you ever considered that your COOKS may be related to the infamous COOK gang in Oklahoma during your time frame? There were a myriad of articles related to this gang in early Oklahoma newspapers. You might find a book or two in your local library, they hung out with the DALTON gang. I would give it a shot. (no pun intended) The head of the gang was a man named Will/Bill Cook. As far as your marriages, I have them down for marriage book lookups. LOCKE: Did you ever consider that since your people were in the CHOCTAW nation, you may be related to VICTOR M. LOCKE chief of the Choctaw tribe? again...worth a look. DICKSON: Mother lode. There are so many articles listed in JUST the WPA index for your family, (and this is NOT a comprehensive list, since it was just one of those "make work" projects here in Oklahoma) But there is enough in there to keep you busy for days in the Newspaper room if you ever get down here to Oklahoma City. I chose three to get for you, and they will be in your mailbox later today. Lawyers. I tell ya...they LOVE to see their names in print. BOYD: I have your cousin's Obit, and will be sending it to your email today. GREENLEE: I have your grandmother's obit and will be sending it to your email today. And that was my two hours worth at the Newpaper Archives. Nalora
