    3. My great grandfather William Whitlock worked for Shell at the turn of the last century laying the first oil pipe line in Ok. His second oldest daughter (my grandmother) was born in the territory. She told me many stories of their life in a covered wagon and a tent. Her family traveled with a group of workers, many of whom also traveled with family, to lay the pipe. Their little mobile community would set up and stay at one site for 3 to 5 days at a time. ----- Original Message ----- From: Vickie Neill Taylor To: OKROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, February 22, 2001 6:32 AM Subject: [OKROOTS] Gypsy Camp in the Seminole Area "Karen" As the question has been asked, I thought I would post this to the list. Gypsy camp has been mentioned in some of the "70 Years Ago" posts. this camp was oil field workers and their families. Gypsy was one of several camps like this in this area. Oil wells were given some sort of a name and or number to be able to keep track of them. I'm sure that the name of the camp came from the well, but I have no idea why the well or lease may have been given that name. A lot of them were named for the land owner or the people that put up the money for the drilling. One of the earliest wells in Seminole county was named for the owner's daughter. Many times, at least early on, these "camps" were made up of tents and some buildings were added later. In some areas, you may find that some buildings are still standing and in other camps there really isn't any sign left that they were there. In one in particular, the only thing left is a steering wheel from a model A or T, I can't remember which I was told, sticking up out of the ground. Some have tried to pull it up but it won't budge. It kind of makes you wonder if it is still attached to the car. There are a few of the oil well bases still there as well but that is all that can be seen now. 3. I don't know whether WSCH was in operation at the turn of the century or not; but here is some history and maybe a palce for you to look. At one time Whitaker State Orphans Home (later Chilren's Home) located at Pryor, OK , along with Girls Town at Tecumseh, along with Taft State School for Girls and Taft State School for Boys both at Taft, Helena State School for Boys at Helena (think I am forgetting one but can't recall it right now) were all under the jurisdiciton of the State of Oklahoma, State Board of Public Affairs, then sometime ni the 1960s by an act of the legislature all were transfered to the Department of Public Welfare (later known as Depart. of Institutions, Social and Rehabilitative Services) and now known as Department of Human Services. All files of the children who were residing at the residences were transferred to the DHS. If a person is searching for someone who was in the institutions when they were transferred to DHS and earlier, I would start with the Deaprtment of Human Servcies state offices in Oklahoma City. At the time of the transfer of the homes to to DHS, the files of all children who were there or who had been there were also transferred. Like I said at the beginning of this message, I don't know of the Whitaker State Childrens Home was in existence or ot in 1899, but you might start with DHS. Someone in hte agency should be able to give you some information on the history of Whitaker. Have you searched the 1900 census records for Pottawatomie County, line by line? She may have been living with a family. She may have been in one of hte Catholic Charity Homes or living with the nuns. Liz Freeman > Was Whitaker State Orphans' Home in Pryor in operation at the turn of the century? They might have housed unwed mothers who were also orphans. However, I do not know how to get their files. I have been trying to get info on a later incarnation of this place--called Whitaker State Children's Home in the early to late 70's (a home for problem and neglected children). The state later shut it down in

    3. I have looked for a relative in the 1900 census and can't seem to find her. She was an unwed mother at the age of 13 in 1900 and an orphan. This occurred in Pottawatomie Co. in 1899. Was there such a place as a home for unwed mothers in Oklahoma or Indian Territories during this time period? I don't have a clue as to where to look for her. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Leslie lliddiard@nc.rr.com

    3. I've been working with the Stephens County Genealogical Society, in Duncan, OK. They are very nice to work with and get back to you quickly. Here's the complete address: Stephens Co. Gen. Society 301 North 8th Street Duncan, OK 73533 Also, look at the Duncan, Ok library web site. (Sorry, I don't have the URL in front of me.) They have a link on their site to genealogical holdings. One more thing: the Stephens Co. clerk of courts gets back to you right away when you request things like marriage certificates. They are wonderful to work with, too. Stephanie
