    3. Avie: I do so apologize. Forget everything I said in the earlier email about Will Rogers. It was Wiley Post who dropped out of school early, it was Wiley Post who was around the air show. Wiley and Will were killed together in an airplane crash off Point Barrow, Alaska. Blame it on a senior moment. But you might still try the State Library in the Oklahoma Historical Society Building and still try the school records in the county. Sorry about the mixup. Liz Freeman

    1. [OKROOTS] CAUDLE FAMILY
    2. Hi all. I am at it again with my search for the Caudle family. I wish to Thanks Liz Freeman and the rest of the list members who were so very very kind with their assistance. Unfortunately i still haven't found out where Ross Caudle met Will Rogers. I have emailed the Will Rogers Museum but they have not replied. Does anyone else have suggestions on who or where to contact. The Department of Education said they had no information on the schools from that time period. I have a couple of questions to ask. Ross Caudles step mother, Nellie Brandt Caudle was a mid wife in the area around Claremore and Oogalah. Sorry if I spelled it wrong.. Would midwifes have to go to the county seat and register? Did they help the local town doctor? In the 1900 Census, Indian Territory, (Thanks to Joy Elkins) they were shown to be renting where they lived. My mom told me that right before they left they sold their property. I have tried the BLM records site with negative results? I am at a loss at who, what, and where to go from here. Any suggestions? I received a very pleasant surprise in the mail the other day. A cousin sent me a picture of Ross Caudle while he was living in New Mexico. The picture was taken about one month prior to his death. Now I know what he looked like. Avie

    3. Avie: Have you tried the OK State Library in the Oklahoma Historical Society Building. In the lobby of the building, they have many artificts/photos on Will Rogers. It may be they have more information. While waiting for the library to open one day, I reread all the info in the lobby. If I remember correctly, one article said he dropped out of school in the 7th grade (I may not have that right). But if that is the case, I'm sure they could tell you the years he was in school and where he went to school. My experience with researching schools in OK is that the school records are maintined in the county where the school is located - some in the school system itself, some in the county records. I have found school records back as far as 1911 in four different counties. If your Caudle person were into flying, he could have easily met Rogers in one of the Air Shows. Good luck. 3. I don't know if there is a genealogy society anywhere near Holdenville. One of the things that goes on here is that genealogists are constantly recording things into the computer for future generations. Some of these old records are miles and miles long. You would need some volunteers and the funeral home would have to agree to let the genealogy society come in and record the records. ----- Original Message ----- From: Vickie Neill Taylor <flip@okplus.com> To: <OKROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2001 6:32 AM Subject: [OKROOTS] Funeral Records Lost To Time! > Hi List, > I had a very sad trip to Holdenville yesterday. 3. Hi List, I had a very sad trip to Holdenville yesterday. I went over to the funeral home to do a little research. It appears that all of the records dating back before 1927, have pretty much been lost to time. The books are still there, but they are in such poor shape that they wouldn't allow me to use them. I am trying to work out something with them to some how record the information and at least save it to disks or something to keep the information available for use. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Rebinding the books would be so expensive that it is kind of out of the question, there is a shelf full of them. How can I help them to preserve the information in the books? I'm certainly open to suggestion here. With this in mind, your might want to consider speaking with your neighboring funeral homes to see if the same fate might be about to happen. Maybe this problem can be avoided to other records. Specifically the 1910 or 1920 soundex/miracode index for James/Jim and Sophia MARTIN they had at least one son named Richard G. MARTIN. The soundex code for Martin is M635. I have no idea which county- that is one of the things I am hoping to learn. I have access to the 1900 and 1920 OK census but no index... Any help is greatly appreciated. Roberta in Vancouver, WA

As you know, the more info that you impart the more helpful it is to the person that may do some looking. There are lots of James Martins. Just a helpful suggestion. Thanks Tom S
