    1. [OKROOTS-L] Name That Outlaw
    2. Beverly Brown
    3. My great-grandfather, Benjamin Meriwether Snead, lived from 1847 until 1899. He fought in the Civil War, even though he was too young, and then later rode with Quantrell's Raiders, which included Frank and Jesse James, in Kansas and Texas. All-in-all, Ben hung out with some pretty unsavory characters. Eventually Ben, along with his brother Thomas, settled in Indian Territory, near what is now Ft. Towson, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, where Ben married Amanda, a full-blood Choctaw. My grandfather Ed Snead (1887-1974) was one of their children. One day when Ed was a little boy, all the adults were working out in the fields when a woman outlaw rode up to the house and asked the children, "Where's Ben?" When they told her, she felt sorry for the little Indian kids left to their own devices while the adults worked, so she decided to cook something for them. What impressed my grandfather most was that before she started to cook, she took out a knife and very carefully cleaned the dirt from underneath her fingernails. She then prepared "a fine pan of biscuits." If my grandfather was a "little boy", but old enough to remember the details, this probably took place sometime between 1891 and 1900. I thought my grandfather told me the woman was Belle Starr, but when I looked up bio information on her, the dates didn't fit. I don't remember now what the dates for Belle were, but I think she was dead before this (where's my Oklahoma history book when I need it?) My mother thinks he might have said it was someone who was "as notorious as Belle Starr." Do you know who our woman outlaw was? 1. [OKROOTS-L] Calvin Spencer
    2. Hi! Anyone ever heard of Calvin Spencer? He and his girlfriend were a kind of small time Bonnie and Clyde. They came from Oklahoma, robbed banks around Kansas, Oklahoma and maybe Arkansas. He was on FBI most wanted list. Rumor has it that he was shot to death some place in Oklahoma. I hear he was my father's second cousin or something. They grew up together near Higgins, Texas (It's right on the state line -- or was in early 1900's. Would love to know when and where he died, where he's buried, etc. C. Shanahan

    1. Re: [OKROOTS-L] SURNAME YOUNG
    2. Rob Pitts
    3. Mary Grace: In a 1911 book entitled, "Gospel Preachers in Texas and Oklahoma," compiled by Mrs. C. R. Nichol there is an entry for B. C. YOUNG with a picture of a heavily bearded gentleman and the following biographical sketch: [B. C. Young was born February 20, 1842, in Tennessee. English and Irish descent. His grandfather was Methodist preacher in England. His father was a Methodist, and his mother joined them on "probation," but was never received into full fellowship. At the age of 64 and 67, respectively, they obeyed the gospel. Brother Y. secured his education, largely thru his own energies, after he was grown - working and attending school. He was a student in the Bible School, Lexington, Ky., for one year. In 1869 he was married to Amanda E. Hall. She assisted him in is work of preaching - being wise in counsel, noble in character, strong in faith and constant in devotion to her family and her God. To them six children were born. Four now living - devoted members of the church. For a time he lived in Missouri, and under the teaching of the Cumberland Presbyterians tried to "get religion," but failed to "come through." June 10, 1866, at Murfreesboro, Tenn., he obeyed the gospel. At that time he was 24 years old and had never seen any one baptized. Two years later he began preaching and since that time has been active in the ministry. Brother Y. is rather of a retiring disposition, which accounts for his not being more widely known. In his quiet way he has labored in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, California, Texas, Oklahoma and Mexico. Tho 64 years old he has spent the year of 1910 among strangers and largely in mission work in Florida.] I hope this is of some help to you. 3. Has it been a week yet? I have already had wonderful information that is going to provide us with other avenues to check. Thanks to Robert & Jean! They have given us wonderful leads. Jean just emailed me with an article that appeared in today's Capitol Hill Beacon in the "What Happend this Day in History" column. It was about the Southside Dairy that was owned by H.G. Little and Ed Hisel! My husband's grandfather and great-uncle! Thanks to everyone else who has responded to us. We aren't through yet and will need further support. If anyone else has connections in Capitol Hill back around 1900-1950, let us hear from you. We will be looking into the Beacon's records further and might run across your ancestors. Thanks again! Beth and Jim Little
