    1. [OKROOTS-L] Indian Ancestor?
    2. Linda Haas Davenport
    3. For those who are hunting ancestors in Indian Territory and who believe that their ancestors were Indian, the information below may help to determine which Indian tribe their ancestor might have belonged to. Most people who think Indian, think Cherokee, but there were many, many tribes in Indian Territory. The following is an excerpt from a speech delivered by the Hon Edgar S. Vaught, Nov 14, 1945 before the Daughters of the American Revolution. The complete speech may be found in The Chronicles of Oklahoma pg 386-393, 1945. 1830 - President Jackson moved the Cherokees, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks and Seminoles to Indian Territory (at the time Arkansas and Oklahoma) 1832 - Congress appointed the Stokes commission to deal with the Indians and make treaties with them. The tribes located in Indian Territory were; Senecas, Choctaws, Cherokees, Creeks, Osages, Wichitas, Wacoes, Comanches, Kiowas, Delawares, Quapaws, Seminoles, Cheyennes, Arapahoes, Sac and Foxes, Pawnees, Iowas, Kickapoos, Shawnees, Potawatomis, Poncas, Sioux, Otes and Missouris. The native tribes of OK previously had most of their contact with Mexico and many spoke Spanish. 1836 - AR was admitted as a state - all Indians moved to OK Many of the Indians had Negro slaves and many fought for the south in the civil war. 1889: OK Land Run: Logan, Oklahoma, Cleveland, Canadian, Kingfisher and Payne counties were established from Indian lands 1891: Sac & Fox Indian land opened as Lincoln and Pottawatomie counties 1892: Cheyenne and Arapaho lands opened as Blaine, Dewey, Day, Roger Mills, Custer and Washita 1893: 2nd Land Run - The Cherokee Strip - from Osage country to the Texas border became Kay, Grant, Garfield, Pawnee, Woods, Woodward and Nobel counties. 1901: Government purchased the area of; Kiowa, Comanche and Caddo counties from the Iowa and Comanches 1906: The reminder of the counties in OK formed after statehood Linda lhaasdav@avana.net Linda lhaasdav@avana.net Home Page: http://www.avana.net/~lhaasdav/Haas.html County Coordinator: Marion Co AR http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion

    2. Bill F. Timmons
    3. Is anyone out there chasing old Timmons bones. We have traced back to 1700 in Maryland. My great Grand Paw John Wesley was in Shawnee Ok. with my grand parents John Wesley and Cordia Alice Croy Timmons in 1900. They were on the 1900 Census. We lost him there. Family said he died and was buried in Shawnee. He was listed as alive on one of his brothers obituaries in 1904. None of the cemeteries have him listed as an occupant. The only records that I have found is for names on headstones. My grandparents were in McCloud in 1907. Can any one shed any lite on his whereabouts. Thanks bt
