Some of these folks lived in other counties at different times, so if you need more information to be able to look them up easier, let me know. 3. My great-grandfather Jack "Major" HAWKINS was in Ponce City OK at one time and I am told by family members that he was a town Marshall there. His Daughters (my grandmother) name was ROSE IRENE HAWKINS. I'm dealing with a problem of not knowing when this all happened. because of the age of my Father supposed birth date, I am assuming that HAWKINS was there somewhere between 1880-1910. All of my relatives are gone now so I'm grasping at straws. If anyone out there can recognize any of the above information I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you----Kathleen Mills

    3. Hi, While I was recording in the Yeager Cemetery, less than 10 miles from Wetumka, I came across this ADKINS. This is a wooden marker with his name and dates engraved on the front. Painted on the back is a whole bunch of good information. ADKINS James Lewis 17 Mar 1863 25 Dec ? (Back) James Lewis ADKINS"Jimmie" was born in Missouri 17 Mar 1863 to Caswell ADKINS and Margarett Angline ATKINSON, daughter of James S. ATKINSON and Sophia DECKARD. James married Dosh BELVINS around 1893. To this union 6 children lived to adulthood Lida Elizabeth (1894) married Frank CHANCELLOR. Sam W. (1899) married Florence JENNINGS. Gertie D. (1900) married C. CHANCELLOR. Frank Sylvester (1902) No known marriage. Marline (1906) married Burna Ree CROW. Dovie (1911) married Rudie ELLIS. James departed this life on 25 Dec 1952 at Boyce Rest Home in Holdenville. If any of these help you, I think we are going to find that some of the people are buried in Yeager as well. 3. It's been a long while since I posted this info. My home page below contains a list of Diaries written by southern women during the Civil War. And, wouldn't you know it, not a single one of them is mine. Drop by and see if you can find someone that belongs to you <g> Linda lhaasdav@avana.net Home Page: http://www.avana.net/~lhaasdav/Haas.html County Coordinator: Marion Co AR http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion

    1. [OKROOTS-L] Info for OK Researchers
    2. Linda Haas Davenport
    3. I posted this to the OK-TX List awhile back. It might be of interest to some folks here. I have seen several inquires asking for info on black, white and Indian ancestors and where records could be found for them in early OK Terrority. If you are looking for this information please read on. The OK Archives has millions of records on Indians, Whites and Blacks, most before 1900/1920. Two of these groups of records are index cards of names that were abstracted by the WPA. These cards are set up by name and can be quickly checked. The cards DO NOT COVER any where close to the total number of records that are available but there are thousands of names. The first set of cards are names abstracted from early newspapers and the 2nd set from early Indian Terriroty Records (for both white and Indian). The names and the location of the records and a short summary of info is found on each card. The Ok Archives has hundres of microfilm rolls of newspapers, many from Indian Territory days. These microfilm rolls are cataloged by the county / area where the newspaper was published. If you have an idea of the area and time frame the researchers will check these papers for you. Information as to cost and copy charges can be requested from the OK Archives. The Archives also sells copies of these newspaper microfilm rolls. The last time I bought one the cost was $30.00, but I don't know for sure what the cost is now. A woman by the name of Sharron Standifer Ashton has two small books avilable that are excellent resources for anyone looking for ancestors in OK prior to 1907. 1st: "Indians and Intruders." Abstracts of: 1766 list of Chickasaw traders in the old Chickasaw country ; 1831 list of white intruders in the old Creek country; 1860 Slave Schedules for the Chicasaw & Choctaw Nations; 1882 list of intruders in the Choctaw Nation; Burials, baptisms, marriages and deaths at Forth Supply, Indian Territory, 1870-1894; evidence of marriages in the Creek National 1876-1897; permits to non-citizens in the cherokee Nation, 1874-1894. 2nd: "Guide to Cherokee Indian Records Microfilm collection at the OK Archives" The Archives and Manuscripts division of the OK Historical Society and OK Archives holds one of the largest collections of cherokee Indian records in the nation. These records document the history of the Cherokee people and their nation from the early Indian removals. Resources described in this book include records of Cherokee citizenship, census, enrollment, legslative and executive records; land, permit and estate records; district and supreme court records, allotment plat maps, tribal council records; school records; lists of intruders and other non-citizens; records of slaves and freedmen; civil war records. Both books can be ordered from: Ashton Books, 3812 Northwest Sterling, Norman, OK 73072-1240. I'm not the author of these books and don't know the author, but I do know the vast amount of info in the Archives and how difficult it is to locate early records of OK. If these help someone the message is worth the post. For folks asking for information or copies from the OK Archives: They require a $25.00 deposit from out of state folks and none from OK residents. The Archives is extremely short of money this fiscal year and they are extremely short of staff. I certainly would hate to see the Archives closed to us family hunters, so don't gripe too much about the fees. I don't have the mailing address of the Archives so please Check the www.rootsweb.com site for the mailing address. The Archives and the OK Historical Society are in the same building. 3. I posted this several months ago to the TX/OK List. Since there is now a list devoted to only OK I think that many of you will be interested.
