Thank you, I have had a number of response's from the wonderful people of Oklahoma. I am unable to go to the suggested places as I am in California. I spoke to several elderly family members and they said that they attended Hershel Oxfords Funeral, and that he also was buried in Lehigh, thank you for the corrected name of Ft. Sill. I still have a living gAunt she is 92 and lives in Atoka, I have a hard time on the phone with her as she is now deaf and blind, but has a clear mind, but she can never quite understand what my questions are. I have a copy of the funeral card on George washington Oxford he died in Colgate on 2 Feb. 1964, service was conducted at the Baptist Church in Lehigh by Rev. Lee R. Newberry, burial was at Lehigh Cemetery, Service under the direction of SLATERS. Susan A. Cate Oxford died 1889 and also in Lehigh I am told that we have a family plot there. In the old family bible is has a H.O. Oxford should be Hershell died 23 Jan. 1880 I also have that George Washington Oxford worked in the coal mines at Midway abt 1906-1912 then farmed then became a guard at McCalister Prison. Once I get thru the challange of John Collins Oxford, I will once again ask for help on my Mother side of the family, they were from Carnigie ( need correct spelling) sirnames HATTON-DAVIS, my mother passed away 15 April 1996 and her ashes are at the Holy City I am unsure of where that is, it was her wish so it was granted. Again, thank you all for your help, I realize I was born in Ca. but No body can't say I don't have okie blood, Cherokee, Choctaw and maybe a few more. Thanks Debbie Oxford Long

I even know the place on the shelf! <big grin and a nudge on Donald Locke> too bad I did not copy the O pages, I could give you that right now. There actually is a few partial censuses for 1890 in Oklahoma and they are housed at the OHS. There is a nice little Index card file of the partial 1890 census, and then there are the various other small ones. I will give the Ottawa county assessment books in the stacks tomorrow (I am not going there til afternoon) and have a gander at the index cards. >I have requested death certificates from Okla. There are also several books on the subject of the Civil War in Oklahoma. I can send you a list if you like, and you can see if your local library carries them, they are available for sale at the OHS museum giftshop. Nalora
Here is yet another one of my "Dead Ends" for your perusal: Great Grandpa: Jesse Pickney BURNS. born 1879, somewhere in Texas. Mother: Lula J. (DAVIS) BURNS Lula J. Burns shows up in the 1880 Henderson county TX census in the home of her mother (apparently, she is listed as daugther, Jesse is listed as grandson) Minerva DAVIS. Both are check marked: widowed within the year. I would LOVE an 1880 Texas Mortality Schedule lookup on these two names. ( DAVIS and BURNS) Unfortunately the OHS does not have one. Family oral history says that Jesse's father (Lula's first husband) was decapitated in a train accident. Apparently, he was a brakeman on the train and as he was braking it went into a tunnel and chopped his head off. Nice story *cough* but who knows if it is true. Nalora
Does anyone know of the few BROWN Lines that has Kay Co. roots? Michael.

Good Morning, I am hoping for all of your help... I have been searching for my OXFORD roots which end in Oklahoma. My hope was for a Census record in 1890 for Oxfords in Muskogee Okla. I did not realize that Oklahoma did not have one till now. I have Oxfords born and buried in Oklahoma from all sides of my family. I have been unable to find where my ggGrandfather was from. His name was John Collins Oxford b. ?? he married Susan Cate in 1868 Hopkins County Tx. They had a son born in 1888 in Muskogee, Okla named Charlie M. Oxford. The majority of the Oxford's are buried in Lehigh Cemetery in Lehigh, Okla. I have requested death certificates from Okla. City but was told that all of the records were destroyed by fire. I know that the family lived and grew up in the Atoka, Colgate, Lehigh area's and that another of John's sons married in 1904 Atoka, Indian Terr. this marriage record I have. Another of John's children Hershel Oxford was said to have died in the Civil war at Ft. Seal by being kicked in the head by a muel. But again, I have no records just here say. I would greatly appricate any assistance from anyone or direction that I may turn to get past this point in my history. Thank you, Debbie Oxford Long
This morning in Lookups I stayed in Newspaper work. I really love old newspapers, especially the old western ones at the turn of the century. There is a great book about Old Newspapers called: "Red Blood and Black Ink" by David Dary it was just published this year, (1998) but is awesome work if you are interested in Newspapers at all I recommend it. (It might even have a relative of yours in it, since it is just chock full of old columns and articles, and pictures) Two things will sure fire get you into the papers. Being a lawyer, and being an outlaw. For this reason the first things I looked up were the surnames COOK and DICKSON. AUNTYDO: Have you ever considered that your COOKS may be related to the infamous COOK gang in Oklahoma during your time frame? There were a myriad of articles related to this gang in early Oklahoma newspapers. You might find a book or two in your local library, they hung out with the DALTON gang. I would give it a shot. (no pun intended) The head of the gang was a man named Will/Bill Cook. As far as your marriages, I have them down for marriage book lookups. LOCKE: Did you ever consider that since your people were in the CHOCTAW nation, you may be related to VICTOR M. LOCKE chief of the Choctaw tribe? again...worth a look. DICKSON: Mother lode. There are so many articles listed in JUST the WPA index for your family, (and this is NOT a comprehensive list, since it was just one of those "make work" projects here in Oklahoma) But there is enough in there to keep you busy for days in the Newspaper room if you ever get down here to Oklahoma City. I chose three to get for you, and they will be in your mailbox later today. Lawyers. I tell ya...they LOVE to see their names in print. BOYD: I have your cousin's Obit, and will be sending it to your email today. GREENLEE: I have your grandmother's obit and will be sending it to your email today. And that was my two hours worth at the Newpaper Archives. Nalora
Thanks. I doubt I will find anything else. This is the first info any of the family has found. Please see if it mentions the marriage of Robert to Alice. I would love to get the Creek info documented. Thanks Cindy

The Muskogee Co. Library's Genealogy section has the Soundex for 1900 Chickasaw and I believe the Choctaw Nations, along with the censuses for them. I don't remember if they have one for the Creek Nation or not. They also have most of the Daily Oklahoman, and the Muskogee Daily Phoneix(spelling!) there too. There is also an 1890 Oklahoma Territorial census,(Oklahoma Territory only, no Indian Territory). Hope this helps.

I have found Robert TURNER on the Creek Nation list of intruders. If you can find specific info about his permit, would appreciate it. I would also like to ask if you find Jon/John James Franklin WHITE and/or Ida Flora TRUE/TRUEL/TRULL on the list of intruders for the Cherokee Nation. They lived in Chelsea before OK became a state. Thank you! Cindy
An intruder and non-citizen list is a list of people, usually white, who were living in Indian Territory. A permit to live there was required as the Indians had sovereign nations in IT before the Dawes Act. This period was from about 1835 to 1895(rouughly.) The site I found for the Creek Nation list is this: http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eitcreek/records2.htm I hope this helps. Cindy
