    1. Re: [OKROOTS-L] Gene Autry and Gene Autry, Carter Co., OK
    2. I'm still a little miffed he never showed up for a dedication of Berwyn changing it's name to Gene Autry. Maybe couldn't make it on November 4, 1941, but NEVER???? How many other towns were named after a person that was never there? I'd change it back to one of the original names (Lou, Dresden, or Berwyn). 2. Well Vashti/Nalora I wasn't saying you were wrong, heaven forbid, I was only stating my opinion as I had recently visited there, now maybe we can stop wasting peoples time with this, ok, Bill Cook In a message dated 10/3/98 8:20:35 AM Central Daylight Time, vashti@theshop.net writes: << Ghost Towns of Oklahoma includes cities that once were thriving and growing and now are slowly dying out, as the oldsters of the town die, and the young folks move away. Berwyn (Gen Autry) in the last paragraph it says: "During World War II Gene Autry was given a brief period of growth. Large Aviation facilities were located just north of the village, and many people working there lived in the community. One rock building completed in 1904 still stands, it houses a small grocery store. The store, a church, and the post office plus a few homes are all that remain of a place that in 1915 had ten stores, a newspaper, two lumbermills, a hotel, an oil mill, two cotton gins, an elevator, and its own electric light plant. There were also two lawyers, two doctors, and an undertaker. The population has dropped from over 600 to 120 in 1970 and an estimated 90 in 1975. The consolidated grade school which continues to function is known as the Berwyn School." Not all Ghost Towns are filled JUST with Ghosts. Some of us kinda like to live with ghosts. (Heck, I live in a city but live across the street from a cemetary) Personally, I think Meeker and Mulhall OK are ghost towns, but they still exist, just slowly but surely....dying out. Nalora >>

Now I now have the 5 civilized tribes on CD ROM, but the others...if you are a minor tribe you have to get that elsewhere. Now once you find your name on a roll, you can look at the census card, then the application....It can lead you somewhere, it can lead to nowwhere. I did check your Robert Turner on my new CD as soon as I got it, and there is one listed, however I have not figured out how to get it to come back up again...will have to search for the executable file, it did not make an icon Nalora

Both Counties had the same named Townships and I had a heck of a time keeping them seperated in my mind for a long tome,I was living out of State at that time and that made it harder. So got me some county mapes and traced the tws. on them. Worked out pretty well. This was ca 25 years ago so you can just think how little help you could get then. Good Luck to all searchers!!! 2. Elaine Miller
    3. Living a distance from my local library and working numerous hours I thought that I had finally found a way to help out with look ups in the cemetary and funeral home books. The owners of the company I work for also owns a funeral home and I had to go over there several times a week and it was very convenient to look things up. Unfortunately after I announced this on this list I went to work on Thursday and found out that they had sold our facility. I may still be able to call the secretary over there for an occassional look up if someone is really stumped but otherwise I'm not sure if I will be able to very much. (Although as buy outs go I may be without a job and have a lot of time to look things up.) I would think also that most funeral homes would have copies of these books if you called and asked your local ones. My apologies. I have appreciated everyones help on this board. It is a very fun list. Thanks, Elaine

    1. [OKROOTS-L] Dawes Commission
    2. Bill F. Timmons
    3. The Dawes Commission began enrollment for the 5 civilized tribes in 1896 and it ended March 31, 1906. There were a handful of names added in 1914, I don't remember why. There were three main rolls: The original roll,The newborn and the minor rolls. After the 3/31/06 roll was closed no one could be added. In order to prove Indian blood for these tribes, it is necessary for you to prove linage back to an original allottee on one of these rolls. The emphasis is on proof. You must use birth certificates, death certificates and court records such as probate records. You may find a name on a roll which you are sure is your ancestor, it is up to you to prove it. Oklahoma records are sometimes lacking. All over the state there were people born and died without a record anywhere. In order for a person to have been enrolled in one of these tribes, it would have been necessary for them to live in their respective tribal nation during the time of enrollment. In other words a Cherokee couldn't have lived in Ardmore which is in the Chickasaw Nation and be enrolled. They couldn't be enrolled in more than one tribe. They would have to prove other tribal linage otherwise. The 5 civilized tribes now issue Certificates of Degree of Indian Blood for people who are able to prove direct descendency to an original allottee. Before the tribes contracted with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for most of the programs, it was the responsibility of the BIA to issue CDIB's There was a contingent of Choctaw's who stopped and settled in Louisiana. As far as I know they have never been recognized by the federal govt. Don't count on this with out checking further. Maybe this will answer some of the questions about 5 tribes enrollment. Maybe it will confuse some further, If so I'm sorry. Each tribe has records and can help prove Indian blood, however I understand that isn't always the case now. Several libraries now have copies of the tribal roll books and even other records. I know the ones in Poteau, Idabel have good genealogy sections. McCalister has a genealogy library of its own. They are all eager to help if you will ask. Be sure to add an SASE stamped envelope for mail requests. Be good and go chase ole bones bt

Well, get in the habit of putting the county name on every bit of correspondence now, email or no, save you some stamps, when you start sending off to courthouses in the wrong county. I don't memorize any counties but my own, really. I did not even know what county GUTHRIE was in, but could drive to the town in a heartbeat. Sometimes I will know a county right off by the name of the city, because a tornado has wiped that town off the map a few times, and the tornado warnings are done by county....On bad days I still have to look up my own when I get to a little dinky town my folks stopped off at and had a one kid in and mosied on down the pike.... And we shall see what we shall find along the little genealogical rabbit trails...8) Nalora
