Having tornadoes here tonight. Kingfisher and Payne counties so far. Say a little prayer for your Okie kin. Nalora
When I went to school the teachers told us that most people were born, lived and died within 25 miles of one place. BULL !!!!!!!!!!!! According to my family, and several others I know of, these people would have to be buried in concrete to keep them in one place. Candace, your family isn't to bad. They seem to be the rule rather than the exception. As for the census records, you need to see the humor page on OKGenweb's home pages. It will explain a lot about the confusion due to census records. To be fair, these people did the best job they could. Often they took information from the neighbor or whoever happened to be there at the time. I, and I think most people, tend to take census information with a grain of salt. Rule #1 - VERIFY, VERIFY, VERIFY. Check as many records as possible and look for more. corelate all the information you collect and do your best to weed out the extremes. Bill Walsh We seem to be the smartest when we ask questions, anbd the stupidest when we make statements. Second best, sit quietly in the corner and say nothing.

My mother-in-law has a year book and in it shows all the previous graduating classes. It's Carmen-Dacoma Shadows of the Past. Starts at 1920 and ends at 1995. 1927's pics are too great along with 1990-1991. Meaning they are not very clear. I also have a scanner if anyone is interested. She is also looking for her cemetery book for the Alfalfa County.
My dad now lives on land that was originally the Pleasant Valley in Logan Co. I have a book with information on some of the old settlers and the history. let me know if I can do a look up. Debra at txfischers@aol.com
A man on the Arkansas list has this quote after his name and I thought it was funny and has some truth to it as well... "Families are like fudge... mostly sweet.. with a few nuts."

I know NOTHING specifically of the Coweta / Keota confusion, but thought it might relate to the process of naming Post Offices. Early day communities were typically named without thought to whether there was another of the same name in the territory. If you consider the isolation and lack of communication compared to what we have today, this is easy to understand. So in case of duplicates, the FIRST community to apply for a Post Office got the name. Where I now live in southern New Mexico, there's a nearby village named Picacho, at the foot of Picacho Peak. Residents, however, get their mail from Fairacres -- because the name Picacho had already been approved for a stop in the eastern part of the state when they applied for a Post Office. So if someone is looking for family in Picacho, NM, they must know whether the village or the Post Office is "their" Picacho. The difference is "just" a couple of hundred miles..... I also know of duplicates in Oklahoma. Ghost Towns of Oklahoma has a blurb about Pleasant Valley, which was located in northeastern Logan Co. -- but there was also a Pleasant Valley in northeastern Oklahoma County. And I've wondered how many other early-day territorial communities were called "Pleasant Valley"..... Sharon McAllister 73372.1745@compuserve.com

This is not unusual. It could be a simple matter of: q: Where are you from? a: Mississippi q: Where were you born? a: Illinois. In the earlier censuses this is even more common, depending on how the census taker phrased his question and who he is talking to. Sometimes a really lazy census taker may not even get the information from the actual head of household or his wife, but a neighbor. > Is it normal to find this kind of confusion? I have Edith Emola's brother, Frank Kelley, marrying her >daughter, Mary Roberts, from her marriage to Mr. Roberts! > One more little question, did people all move around in those days like >this family did? These were coming and going from all corners of the USA! I think that it was extremely hard to keep track of anyone being a bigamist or marrying kin. I think the laws on marrying kin are actually quite recent. It was exceptionly common in the south. (hence the song: I am my own Grandpa). With my own line...my slimey worm that wont be trod is, in my belief, a bigamist. There is no other way to account for the birthdates and marriage dates of his kids. Many Indians leased their lands, some of the Indians had surplus lands they gave back to the government for money. some whites worked for indians, or were adopted by the tribe. Many people came up from Texas to IT JUST to get married or have kids to establish residency, so they could acquire permits to live here. Not unlike illegal aliens of today...the same rules apply. I ran across an item in the paper in my lookups the other day of a man who divorced his wife to marry her mother, so he was essentially at one time her husband and later her stepfather. Nalora
